Can't turn auto off in climate control?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

I have searched a bunch for this info but either my search terms stink or there isn't a thread on this. Also this is probably a dumb question, but here goes: I just got a 2014 A4 Quattro Premium Plus and this is my first Audi and I'm loving it. I have a weird thing going on with the climate control though where I could use some help. I have the 3 zone version where I also have the 3 buttons along the bottom of the unit for fan speed, recirculation, and air flow location. I have the climate control on auto and the driver's side and passenger side in sync. All good so far.

What I can't seem to figure out how to do is turn off the auto function. I was trying to change the air flow location by pushing that button, but when I do that I see the graphic on the nav for air flow and it says "auto", and there is an "A" in the LED screen where the temp displays. So I can't seem to affect the air flow. Same is true for fan speed. The auto button is illuminated, so I tried pushing that to toggle it but it won't turn off. It *will* turn off if I turn on the front defroster (as it should), but pushing any of the other buttons such as air flow turns auto right back on again.

So am I being a total noob, or is there something else going on here?

    Thanks, kids.

On my 2012 A4 premium plus to turn auto off I just have to adjust fan speed and location of air to where I want it and it stays. Don’t know if this will be much help.

Yeah just like the guy before me said. If you press auto, it just stays in auto. You can’t un-auto it by pressing auto again lol. To adjust it off of auto, you just have to manually adjust your climate control. So just press the fan speed or air flow button and turn your knob to your preferences

Press the fan speed or air direction buttons next to the dial.

Your manual should have all the info you need and more, you should skim through it.

Thanks for all the responses, but I don't think I described the issue effectively enough. I am pressing either the air direction or fan speed buttons while auto is on. The problem is that doing so with either button does not turn auto off, nor does either button allow me to make any changes. In other words, I can't change the air direction, can't change the fan speed and auto remains on.

Press either of those buttons and then adjust them with the knobs

bottom line is the auto button sets it to auto , the other adjustments " overide" the auto so when you adjust any of them it turns auto off... the system will automatically set it to the right temp , if you decide its job isnt good enough and crank up the fan or go to different vent .. the auto button say " F You then" and turns off and goes into the corner to sulk.

Well, now all of you have confirmed my suspicion: I am, in fact, a dumbass. NOW I get it: I thought the buttons cycled through the options - didn't think to press the button then use the damn knobs. -10 points for me. Also @Theiceman, cannot stop laughing at the auto button sulking in the corner.

I've used auto mode 1 time. It was 95 degrees outside and Auto thought a fan speed of 7 was all I needed on LO. Haven't turned it on since.

I also don't use the defrost button for the front either. Whenever I hit the defrost button air comes out of the top windshield vents but it also comes out of the foot vents as well. Why it thinks it needs to warm my feet when I have to clear the windshield is beyond me. Now I just hit the vent button and turn it to windshield vents. It clears faster and doesn't cook my feet.

There is a sensor on your dashboard that calculates heat load and another in your mirror for humidity level, having it on auto on a hot day will likely turn on the fan speed full blast to get the cabin's air to a comfortable temp as quickly as possible then it'll lower fan speed by itself once it has reached the temperature. So basically your complaint is that it worked as designed to try and get the cabin to a comfortable temperature as quickly as possible.

Turning on defrost will indeed turn on a bit of footwell heat which is normal, most of the humidity in the car comes from the carpets that your feet have wet from snow or rain or what have you, so it's attempting to dry it out by blowing hot air on it and having it condense from the AC and drain out.

I only ever use auto and defrost settings, they work quite well.

Same. I can't even recall when the last time I used any of the manual controls. Set to auto and adjust the temp as needed.

No it didn't cool the car then turn the fan down it started low and stayed that way.

No other car I've ever been in blows on your feet if you set it to defrost. Maybe it's an Audi thing?

Well, I think what he was trying to say is that it didn’t go to full blast like he wanted.

Then for my own experience, I don’t use auto. In the end it’s all about your own comfort and for me I don’t mind a fan speed of 6-7 on low to cool down the cabin especially if I’m able to here my music over the AC without turning the volume all the way up. And for me, turning on defrost hasn’t blown the footwell or maybe it’s just not a high enough fan speed for me to notice

When I want to quickly warm or cool the cabin I use the manual controls and crank it up to the max, once I’m fairly comfortable I switch to auto and adjust the temperature and it holds that temp without the full blast fan speed and noise.
Also I used to get some mildew smells upon starting the car a/c and I left it in auto mode for a while and now those smells have completely vanished. I found that trick on Audizine somewhere.
