Lift gate tail lamp burnt out - is bulb replacement possible?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
We have an 2016 Q5 and the other day the tail lamp on the lift gate burnt out. The brake light still works, but the running light around the perimeter is out. I took off the tail lamp assembly hoping there was a bulb that could be replacement but it appears to be a sealed unit.

My question, is there anyway to replace the bulb(s), or do I need to replace the entire unit? Any techniques for repairing these? Seems like a waste to just throw it away.

With the taillights there are no bulbs that can be replaced, they are sealed LED units.

I think this is the same light strip - tail lights at one level of brightness and then brake lights at a higher output - no? Any chance something happened recently that might have caused the problem? Towing, any electronic repairs or upgrades? Have you checked the connection to the sealed assembly? Are all fuses good?

Good luck. Please keep us posted.

    EDIT...
Ok, looks like I was off a bit - here's an image of brake lights:

Nonetheless, with the lights on, when you apply the brakes the outer ring lights up, but shuts off when you release the brakes? If so, that seems to point to a connectivity issue of some sort rather than a problem with the light assembly.

Thanks for the replies. The tail lamp unit consists of a LED perimeter light that's on all the time and in interior brake/signal light. I removed both rear tail lamps and swapped in the working unit for the burnt out one to confirm it wasn't a wiring or connection issue. That worked fine. When I reconnect the burnt out light it still doesn't work.

So, I've confirmed the light is in fact burnt out. Wouldn't you know it, we're 780 miles outside of warranty coverage. Ugh!

talk to your dealer. At 780 miles outside of warranty, they might be willing to help you out.
