Windshield wipers - that extra wipe at the end

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
This probably seems random, but my wipers drive me crazy. Being in Canada, we've had a bit of snow already, leading to sloppy roads.

I'll spray my windows, it'll wipe 3 times and be clean. Then 5-10 seconds later it automatically does a follow up swipe and streaks the crap out of my windshield. It bugs the crap out of me because I like a clean windshield.

Am I the only one this bugs? Is there a way to turn off that extra, delayed wipe?

Also as an aside, is there a common wiper people like to run? Think I'm gonna order some new ones.

    Thanks

If not mistaken the afterwhipe can be turned off with vcds/obdeleven, but don't quote me on that. But i think i have seen it between the codes i think.
Personally i like it as often there is still some left over water that gets whiped off with that extra whip.
Maybe you need a new set of whipers or you have something on your windshield (rainX) or something in your water?

Can't go wrong with the Bosh aero ones (or how they are called). Ideally you better replace them yearly before winter.

I believe it can be turned of f with Vagcom too.

Like Dasquade tho, I actually like the feature because there is usually some fluid running down from the top portion of the windshield after the three wipes, the delayed final wipe gets it. I actually enabled it with Vagcom on my Golf to do the delayed final wipe on both the front and rear wipers..

You could also try a different brand of washer fluid that may not streak or streak as much..

Interesting. I've always appreciated the final, delayed swipe, as it clears away the overage from the prior three.

My guess is that you'll enjoy much better performance & results with fresh wiper blades. I've run Bosch Icon (on several different vehicles) and have been pleased. I count myself lucky if I can get a full twelve months' use out of a pair before replacing, but who cares---the only thing more important than steering & stopping a vehicle is being able to see clearly where you're going in said vehicle. :)

This always has annoyed me as well. I don't live in the snow, but do park in gravel at work so I have to use the washer fluid to clean windshield every so often and that courtsy wipe always mkes it worse than if it didn't do it.

Can't believe I didn't come across how to turn it off via VCD on the main thread, thanks gk1!

Thanks guys, I'll order some new ones and see if that helps. It's annoying because it'll get nice and clean, then the wipers just smear it again.

As for vcds, I don't know any one local who does it, and haven't looked into what I'd need to do it myself. Something to research this weekend maybe.

I do understand what the OP is saying - when you are driving on sloppy roads, depending on the temperature (probably pretty cold in Canada), after you clean the windshield, mess from the road can get on your windshield before the delayed wipe, causing streaking. Glad there are options for the OP to turn it off.

Wipers - I have found the AUdi OEM wipers to be the best (not sure the actual manufacturer). For $50, I've found these last longer in New England Winters/Rainy Springs, compared to others that don't last nearly as long.
