LED fog lights, remove error bulb out using VCDS

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
If you are like me and installed LED for the fog lights and you get the error bulb out on your dash. There are two mechanical ways on fixing this. 1) buy a resistor and hope it works. 2) buy the correct over price bulb that work right out of the box. The third way is using VCDS. Going this route get a good LED from amazon --link--> Amazon LED Fog lights ( side note: this is what I have on the q7 and the s4, these are bright and do a great job!) and make use of VCDS and get your money’s worth from your vagcom cable. Now, before I go any further about coding it out with VCDS. Down the road when one or both LED fog light do go out. It will not show on the dash that a light is out because what VCDS does is put a patch on the fog lights to bypass the error, but there is still current being sent to the fog lights. Just be aware if you are driving at night and notice a fog light is out. But with LED they last longer than halogen/HID so it’s nothing to worry about in the near future

So let’s begin. This was done on a 2013 Q7 TDI
    Pull up VCDS
    Go to “Select Control Module”

    Select “09-Cent.Elect.”

    Select “Security Access–16”

In the blank space you want to type in “12151“ and select “Do It!” this number shows up in the bubble as shown and also can be found if you go to ross tech wiki under security access. --link-->wiki ross-tech
To my understanding this is giving permission for VCDS to get access for you do some changes. By typing this nothing is being changed. All it does is open the door for you to go in and change stuff around. If you don’t do this process in security access first the next steps won’t work

    Now to go “Adaptations-10”

In the drop down menu go select “Front Fog Lights”

This is what shows up now. In the box that says New Value. You will inter the number “1 “. In the bubble as shown below says [0 = front fog lights installed] and [1 = front fog lights NOT installed (fault code suppressed)] by default it should have the value of “0” since there are fog lights installed and because of the LED I’m using it generates a fault code. As the bubble says if you put the value of “1” it suppresses the fault code. As I mention before, it still will send current to the fog lights

    Click “test”

And finally click “Yes”. All done!

Now clear the fault codes by going to “Fault Codes-2”
I turned the car off from aux mode and started it up again and I didn’t get the loud beepy sounds it gave me when I did have the error bulb on the dash. Have had no problems since

    This is all great info.

In my 2012 Q7, I went with the iJDMtoy 3000K LED foglight and got bulb out errors. I added an H11 load resistor* and that got rid of the error message.

*This isn't the exact one I purchased but is very similar. The one I bought is no longer available on Amazon.

Great write up. Do you, or anybody on here, happen to know if we can code the vehicle to use the fog lights as cornering lights when the headlights are on? Thanks again fire the write up.

I believe that you can do that through Carista so I'd guess that you can also do it through VSCD. check out Ross techs site under our platform to see if there's a wiki available to do that. I'd be surprised if one didn't exist for it.

Life has taught me never try to make something idiot proof, they'll simply come up with a better idiot.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
I have neither the time, nor the crayons to explain this to you properly.

@dropshadow - Bought a set of these H11 load resistors you linked to, thanks!

Confirming that they work and don't show the bulb out error using deAutoLED dual color LEDs in 2015 Q7 3.0T.

Only caveat is that these get hot when in use.

Yup, these get really HOT. Glad I tested them first, plugged in and outside in the open!

Solution for placement with maximum cold airflow over the resistors.
    This is on a 2015 Q7 with S-line bumpers.

    - Unscrew fog lights from mounting points.
    - Plug everything in (make sure to have wiring hooked up correctly (Yellow Pos.(+) and Brown Neg. (–) )
    - Snake the resistors and wiring through the inboard plastic deflectors (towards the center), into the cold air intake space.

This makes each Resistor and wiring hang in open, cold air, not touching anything. I used one Zip-Tie to fix the wiring to this plastic. I'll snap off a photo with the grilles off.

Curious if anyone has tackled this yet on a Q7 with a solution? (sorta on track with the OG thread VCDS Fog Light fix...)

Enable Fog lights on with High Beams.

This below worked like a top on my 2016 SQ5 and ex-B8 A4 Avant Sport.

    VCDS
Enable Independent Fogs control with high beams
    [09 – Cent. Elect.] [Coding - 07] -> Long Coding Helper -> Byte 4
Bit 1 – (Front) Uncheck the box or change :Bit 1 to 0
Bit 2 – (Rear) Uncheck the box or change :Bit 2 to 0*

Checked on my brother's 2015 Q7, no Long coding helper in Coding-07. Not sure how to proceed.

I know I had this working on my 2012 4L, but it may have been via the Carista app. I did some coding with VCDS and some with Carista on that car.

Out of the depths, I did this a year ago when I put in the LED fog lights..
However, even with this set to zero, I still get foglight out warnings and buzzers. I revisited it today, and it still shows zero (not installed.)
