    MirrorTap install DIY instructions

Step1: Pull the longer cover off (the one that touches the headliner). Do this by pulling down on the skinny side and then there are two tabs (one each side toward the top) that hold this cover to the other plastic cover. Just press in on the long cover where the tabs are to release.

Step 2: Put red lead into the top left hole (where the red with blue stripe wire is), and black lead into the next hole to the right (where the brown wire is)

Step 3: Test! Plug your radar detector in, turn car on.

Step 4: drill small hole in the side of the plastic cover where the two covers meet

Step 5: Reassemble in reverse order.

Step 6: Successfully avoid interactions with the police.

My previous radar detector clearly paid for itself. However, there are so many false alarms these days due to blind spot monitoring systems, that I’m not sure how effective this tool today.

I have a 15 year old valentine 1 that resets itself but still this works to this day. They work just need to look at the band. Was looking into r7 but might just get another v1.

Around here, cops only use Laser and Ka band. I disable X and K (which blind spot systems generate) bands.

I'm using a Mirror Tap with my Uniden R3, but I didn't drill a hole in the cover. The lead was long enough to route out of the cover up near the slender portion. I'm not using a Blend Mount, though. Will try to post a picture later.

Thanks for this! What mirror tap kit did you use? I read somewhere that one of them has too short of a lead.

I just installed my Uniden R3 in my 19 RS3 and used this mirror tap:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I had a mirror tap laying around and the probes were too small/short. That one worked fine, using the larger connectors.

Mt-1015 - go to mirrortap.com and enter in the info they ask on the first page and it will bring you to the correct kit to buy.

A garage door opener. About $16 on Amazon. I bought some thin heavy duty adhesive backed hook and loop to affix it. Not my ideal solution, but it works perfectly.

Dave what mount are you using? PS I pick up my RS3 on Monday through Cain! Thanks, a bit of emailing back and forth but he ended up with the best deal and being the easiest to deal with.

Congrats! I'm using an adhesive mount that just sticks to the windshield. It's made for Uniden detectors. I picked up a couple a number of years ago but never used them. When I was test fitting the R3, I grabbed one of the mounts I had and was able to position the detector as shown in the picture. I liked it, versus my typically Blendmount approach below the mirror. There's just enough room up there so that it doesn't interfere with the passenger sun visor.

Nice I will have to look that up, going on base every day I am hoping the gate guards dont see it as you cannot have them on base. I like how yours is tucked away a bit.

Thank you so much!! Just for clarification to help others. This is the install process for vehicles without adaptive cruise control and all those front safety features. All the past install guides have been for cars with ACC (they have a different mirror) so I am extremely grateful to be provided install instructions for vehicles without this! Cheers

Well that is good to know. It sounds like it didn't change from year to year, but is more likely what iStig just posted that cars with ACC have a different mirror. I wonder if the wire tap is the same across the ACC non ACC models.

Just tried this myself with the Mirrortap MTX-2015 and a Blackvue DR750X-2ch dashcam but can’t get it to power on. I verified voltage with my Fluke multimeter and I see right under 12v. The cigarette outlet power adapter powers on the dashcam no problem, and I verified the voltage is also right under 12v with that adapter. I’m so confused why this isn’t working.

EDIT: according to blackvue, they changed their male DC plug dimensions on their X series, so the mirrortap is useless.

If your leads touch, they will break the fuse. This worked fine for me, just make sure they get in there deep enough. May have to wrap non-contact with electrical tape so it doesn't short.

Many thanks for this OP. Installed the blendmount and mirrortap with ease for my Uniden R7. Verified the ground and 12v with a multimeter. Also didn't have to drill a hole. Ran the wire over the top.

@WmRS3 I'll keep an eye on it to see if there is any battery drainage this week since it'll be in the garage. So far the voltage had been constant (12.4) for the past day.

How did you disconnect the harness??? It seems to be so delicate and the wires are small. Is there a clip that needs to be depressed or something? I have the Blendmount, and a new detector on the way.. Would love to get this installed. thx!
