I'm the happy owner of a brand new (well, I've already got 1k on it!) 2019 S5 Cabriolet. I'm about to take a bit of a road trip in the wide open spaces of the West (sometimes a long way from an Audi or VW dealer) and I wanted to get a couple of liters of oil to carry, just in case my oil consumption proves to be a bit high as is often the case with new engines. (but so far I don't seem to have used any in 1k miles)
I'm currently living 85 miles from the closest Audi or VW dealer, so I want to my local Auto Parts stores (tried NAPA, AutoZone & O'Reilly). The oil spec label in the engine compartment (and in the manual) is 0W-20 meeting spec. VW 508.
Consistently, the local parts stores tell me THEIR online references show 5W-30 (or 5W-40) oil meeting VW 504 or 507 as the recommended oil when putting in 2019 Audi S5. And they tell me (after checking) that they don't stock ANY oil that meets VW 508, although they DO have Castrol and Valvoline 0W-20 that meets a number of US and Japanese mfrs. spec.
I checked w. my local Audi dealer and they DO have Castrol Edge Professional Long Life IV in 0W-20 and meeting VW 508. But I'll have to drive 170 miles round trip to pick up a couple of liters. An online order would have to be for a least a 12 L. case, which is more than I want to buy.
So, any comments or suggestions from you existing S5 owners out there? Have you had trouble finding VW spec 508 oil? Have you used other oil specs despite the fairly firm warming in the manual? From some internet research, I gather that VW spec 508 oil is DYED BLUE (!?) so that you can tell if your engine is using it or not. Is that true??
I realize that the manual allows that, "in an emergency" you can use a maximum of 1 L. of any API SN rated oil, but it seems like one should try to use the official spec oil if you can get it!
