    Issues with 16' S7

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello, this is my first time posting on here, mainly due to issues I'm having with my recently bought 2016 S7

After driving it hard, the car starts reeking gas throughout the whole garage
And when I drive it hard for a longer period of time, it starts smelling like gas inside the cabin too. Last weekend I had to pull over and park it for a while because I was getting dizzy from all the fumes.

I've had the car serviced before and they couldn't find any issues, and they said they told me "cars like these tend to smell like gas". I took it back in today for further inspection because I just didn't feel safe to drive it anymore.
When I bought the car from a dealership in Texas, they specifically said there is no modifications to it and it's still under warranty.
Today the Audi dealership I'm having the car serviced at messaged me saying that the car is tuned, and that voids my warranty, and if any issues pop up I'm going to have to pay out of pocket.

This is my first audi, and so far it's been a horrible experience with some other issues when getting it delivered.

Please let me know what you think the issue could be or just any advice.
    Thank you

Does it run funny, is your gas cap closed? Does it run out of gas fast or use it quickly? Do you see any gas coming out? Probably bad gas cap. Tooo new to need anything else.

Look under the engine cover and see if it has downpipes. Some of the downpipes are known to smell.

Runs fine, gas cap is closed.
It does run out of gas fairly quickly, but I do get about 13 MPG. Haven't seen any gas coming out or any leaks.

Anything else you can think of?

If it was tuned without your knowledge do you have catless downpipes?

After checking for downpipes, if that's not it then yank the rear bench seat up and see if it's wet around the fuel pump.

Have someone rev the car while you watch around the high pressure fuel pumps in the engine bay. Those can leak fuel if someone didn't tighten up the hard line enough.

    bingo.

I'll pretend to be shocked when I see APR or simply catless downpipes

I hope you have it in writing that it is still under warranty from the first dealer.

Yes, when I purchased it they told me it has no mods, and that it is still under warranty.

The car is still at the audi dealership and they're trying to recreate the issue. But so far they havent found anything....

I did ask the service guy to check for downpipes, and he said there's none, so I'm guessing its some sort of stage 1 tune (but I will take some pictures when the car is back)
He keeps saying that the smell is coming from the vehicle having to burn more gas since getting pushed hard...?!!? but having to smell it inside the cabin is beyond ridiculous
@ericw As for the fuel pumps being loose they said everything looks normal no leaks no nothing...

If you guys have any more ideas on what it could be let me know

What in the world makes sense of that explanation? It sounds like how I explain some tech things automotive to my Mom... She loves cars, every chance to get a new one, but that is just odd. For the record, she believes there is an exhaust leak - the tune is easy to determine once plugged in.

Im curious. Is RR dealer at fault for saying its under warranty ? What if the car was never plugged in and never flagged, so no td1, hence having warranty. Traded in to RR and bought with warranty. And the moment u plugged into the ecu @ audi, ur warranty voided.

Cars with tunes and never plugged in , is considered to be under warranty. Only when u get ur ecu plugged into the system @ audi is when tune is detected. So it sucks that u didnt know u had a tune, u coulda possibly asked audi to not plug in, preserving ur warranty

Apologies if the way I explained the situation didn't quite make sense, but I'm fairly bad with car stuff, it's just a frustrating experience that I'm in now and don't quite know what to do

Quick update to the situation, the car went through a multi point inspection, and everything looked good, no issues.
But the smell is still there when driving it hard...

I've been trying to figure out what kind of tune is on the vehicle right now, and the audi dealership says they're not able to. Apparently best way to find out is "Getting in contact with the previous owner" (Which is almost impossible since the car was traded in at a dealership in Utah, then then sold to the RR dealership i got it from in TX)

The audi dealership suspects the tune is causing the gas smell, and they're offering to revert the tune back to stock for 1.8k...

    What should I do?

APR seems to be a popular tune to get on these. Contact APR and give them your VIN and they can look it up in their records to see if its their tune. I would bet they can detune it for a lot less than $1,800.

What are you going to do about the fact that you were told by the selling dealer that there was no mods ? Are you going to fight to have OEM full warranty? If you pay the rape charge of $1.8k for the stock tune, is the dealer willing to drop the TD1 flag on the car and honor the full warranty? If so, I'd go that route...

Or if you are ok with losing your warranty, go ahead and get a proper tune from a reputable company for peace of mind and so you can rule out any sub-standard tune as the cause..

IMO the tune is not the cause of your gas smell, but I'm also not sure what it could be other than an exhaust or evap system leak (which wold ultimately throw a code)... Down-pipe leak makes the most sense. to me..

if the car was sold with non-oem downpipes, it is illegally sold. (from a dealership)

Were the Spark plugs recently changed? if the spark plugs weren't tightened all the way, you can smell gas in the cabin also.

Upon discovery of the tune, I'm going with something cat related. They tuned it and did high flow cats or removed them. Went cat-less on my Viper and it was the worst decision I ever made. Horrible gas fumes, all the time.

Got the car back from the dealership, and they couldn't find any issue

checked for gas leaks, took the back seats out and checked for that spot too, exhaust leaks, and a bunch of other things..

apparently nothing is wrong, and when they drove it they couldnt smell anything

if the car is driven normally, there is no gas smell, but only when I drive it hard like top speed runs and stuff like that it starts smelling horrible. They couldn't resolve anything and told me to come in when it smells like gas...
About the tune, they told me they couldn't figure out what type of tune it is, and I'd have to do that on my own.
Does anyone know how I could find out what type of tune it is? I've been emailing some tuning companies with my vin number just like the suggestion above, but no luck
What are some popular tuning companies for the s7? I've emailed APR so far.

Can u post a pic of the top rear of your engine with the cover off. That could help determine what stage tune is the car.

I agree with others to take it to a good vw/audi indy shop. I swear dealerships lose their minds when they know the car is tuned. Few thoughts:

    1. Is it smell of fuel or exhaust?

    2. Dont pay the stealership $1800 to tune back to stock!!!! Depending upon the tuning company, you may be able to switch back to a stock file little to no cost. And if you have some unknown custom tune, you can buy an ots tune from apr and get a stock file loaded to your vehicle as well. No way is Audi going to reinstate your warranty now so do not pay them to flash it back.

    3. It would be a long shot but the prior owner could have gutted the stock cats. Easy way to check is take out the pre cat O2 sensors and put a scope down there.

    4. Check for exhaust leaks especially if there is aftermarket exhaust.

    5. If plugs are fouled or worn then you could be getting incomplete burn. This is my guess.

Hard to say what else without any info like codes, logs or pics.

Ots means off the shelf. A tune u just go to the dealer to load up on with nothing catered specific to ur car + specifications. Basically a tune that can b applied to a bunch of other cars

Looks like stock DP in your pics so u should be just stage 1 unless original owner put stock DP back but left it stage 2. When you’re refueling do u fill up until the pumps stops or do u keep filling it up to the brim?

I’ve never heard of a tune causing a fuel smell in the car. I’ve been stage 1 (APR) for over a year and no issues.

Didn’t I read a while back about a TSB connected to leaking fuel rails? (Or was that the 3.0T?)

You should take it back to the dealer, ask that a technician or, better yet, the master or lead tech ride with you, and drive it the same way you do to produce the smell.

    That’s the only way...

This is right. They won’t push the car.

I never really fill it up to the max, maybe like 80% everytime. Should I be filling up to the max?

Nice s7, same color as mine! How do you like the APR stage 1? Is it worth the upgrade?

Dumb question, but would it be possible to get a apr stage 1 tune to override mine? Or would I have to go back to stock and then get the apr 1?

What tune do you have? I've heard of a bricked ECU that was tuned by GIAC and overwritten with APR. Ideally you should flash back to stock.
