    245/50R20 winter tire opinions

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Im curious if anyone has experience using winter tires in 245/50R20.
The factory 255/45R20 size doesn’t have many options I’m interested in so I’m looking at alternative sizes.
245/50 is around 2% taller overall and a bit more narrow, obviously.

Looking for opinions from anyone who’s used 245/50 on a Q5.
Would also love to see some photos if anyone has some.

    Thanks in advance.

Michelin has their Pilot Alpin 5 winter tire available in a 255/45 R20 if you wanted to run factory sizing.

They also have the X-Ice available in your requested sizing (245/50 R20), and they are a couple bucks cheaper.

I tend to recommend Michelin due to good past experiences. They balance out nice, wear in even, and do not make crazy amounts of road noise.

The sizing I can't really comment on as I don't have any first hand there - but in theory the skinnier tire would help you out in the snow.

We do offer shipping on tires if you would like. Just send me a PM with what you want (and a zip code) and I can get you a price!

Why? I can’t think of one reason why it wouldn’t

Too tall by 0.4 or 0.5" depending on the tire. 245/50 are 29.7-29.8" tall. 29.3" maximum due to suspension parts.

    True dat!
But, if you like exercises in futility, show us the pics when you're done mounting them.

Wow, thanks guys. I didn’t realize the OEM tire size was such a tight fit.
I went out and looked and the upper knuckle is pretty close.
245/50 is 29.64” which is .6” taller than OEM and .34” bigger than the max size you quoted.
If 29.3 is the max and the factory tire is 29.0, that means Audi only accounted for 1% variation.
Visually it looks like it would fit... probably not worth the risk tho...
