Miles left in tank vs actual mileage.

I’m sure this has been discussed, but it seems like the forum search function is broken right now.

What is everyone seeing in actual mileage per tank on V8 models? My mike estimate is always around 480 when I fill up but the odometer only reads around 315 per tank. I regularly run the full tank before I fill up and this isn’t anything new mildly annoying. I didn’t buy this car for the MPG just wondering if anyone else has this discrepancy. To be honest, I drive like a granny most of the time.

I am Stage 1 APR, maybe a reflash to updates coding would fix this?

I’ve always assumed it’s based on potential rather than actual.

the counter goes off an average of your last fill up mpg and there for is not an accurate depiction of what you can expect. if you really care about mpg the best way is to use the trip odometer to keep track of miles and divide by gallons you put in the tank when you fill up.

How many miles to empty when you refill? If it is close to 50 you may be still have 4 gallons left in tank.
Estimated range is using all available fuel; also when you reach 0 miles range fuel tank may have 2 gallons left.
This car is very powerful and needs efficiency mode to improve mpg especially in city driving!

I agree on judging on average, my old A6 was fairly decent at that. A 480 mile tank is about 26mpg which I’m sure I have never achieved.

I usually fill up on the last bar, sometimes two bars.

For 37k miles worth of records my average fill-up is 16.4 gallons. (Try not to run it dry) My average range is closer to 280. But I don't usually drive conservatively.
As others have said...at 0 miles to empty there is roughly 2 gallons left to actual empty (don't try it) or roughly 30-40 miles.
The distance to empty at fill-up is usually a useless number as it calculates based of some period just prior to fill-up...not sure what it is, but always seems inaccurate compared to reality.
FWIW (neat feature) on the digital gas gauge likes ours when you are at the last two bars they are both white, then when it drops to 1 it turns red go a little further and when the warning comes on in the DIS the red led starts blinking.

gk1, sounds like similar mileage to mine, what does your estimate say on F? Again, I don’t really care about the mileage only prefer the expected mileage to be accurate. It’s a minor gripe.

LOL. I haven't really paid attention to it after fill-up since I disregard the number. I'll check next time I fill it, but fair warning...that is monthly now. So maybe another two weeks.
FWIW If you coast in to a station after smooth sailing on the highway when you fill-up that number may be very high, but if you were just doing all city driving before fill-up for example it will be lower, but still probably not as low as what you really end up getting. It is another one of Audi's idiosyncrasies. All my Audi's back to 2001 have been that way. My personal (conspiracy) opinion is this is on purpose. In the beginning when full-up it make it seem like the car gets excellent range to the casual observer, but as it nears to the end they make it go to zero miles to empty when you still have 40 miles left. Very un-German if you ask me, but I'll bet other parties other than just engineers were involved in that one.

On a side note have you adjusted your DIS consumption value in VCDS it may help, but again I have never really tested that with respect to full range, just average consumption over a full tank.
I am currently at 108 meaning stock the DIS was 8% over-estimating average fuel economy, but by my calculations I am now running 2% low so I may have to try 106.

either use a strip of electrical tape, or just learn to ignore. It made me mental the first month of ownership. I swear my gauges showed more fuel and mileage some days than the day before. look forward!

Thursday and Friday I drove mostly around town so my average fuel economy was tanking at the time. This morning I filled up and drover to work pretty much all highway. When I first filled up it registered 525 miles DTE. At some point in my 63 mile travel the fuel economy prediction started adjusting to my current driving and I saw 545 DTE at one point. When I backed in to my parking spot and shut the engine off it read 520 DTE. For my 12 A7 it seems to be predicting off the most recent fuel economy averages.

I have never ran it down to zero yet so I am not sure how accurate it is once it gets down below 50. Now on my wife's Jeep when the low fuel light comes on we have roughly 10 -14 miles left in it. We have accidentally tested that. Light came on and we drove maybe 13-14 miles to the gas station and put 15.7 gallons in to the 15.5 gallon tank.

I've ran the gas out of gas in my S6 on purpose in order to refill with race fuel and I got 50 kilometers from the time the DTE was 0 until the car was sputtering and died..

FWIW I just clicked over to the half-full mark and the DTE is 195 miles. (Sure, rolling downhill with a tailwind.)
Probably get closer to 100-130 before DTE says 0.

Ehhhh, don't do that you'll burn out your fuel pump faster this way. I don't even let my car get under 25% lol.

I’be been running all my cars down to Almost empty for close to 750,000 or more miles and never once burned up a fuel pump. The only fuel pump I have had to replace since 1999 was in my son’s van and that was because of a design flaw where it cracked on the top of the pump

Right in the manual, reasons not to run 'till empty. Also, the fuel pump is lubricated and cooled by the fuel itself so if it's sucking air it gets warmer and wears faster. It's not terribly bad every once in a while but it's best not to make it a habit. Especially if you can avoid it simply by filling up again early.

    Larry, another data point.
Filled up the SQ5 today. Exact same weight as the S6. Same size tank and (surprisingly/maybe) comparable long term calculated mpg 17-18 for the way I drive them.
The DTE reading was 450 miles. Yeah right... perhaps with two extra 5 gal cans in the back.
Since in my experience you reach 0 miles to empty with roughly 2 gallons remaining it estimates 25mpg when I fill-up....not even close.

Filled up my A7 this morning.

442.4 miles driven, 17.258 gallons squeezed in the tank. 25.6 MPG for this tank.

I am speculating that was 370ish miles highway at 75 - 80 MPH and 70ish miles town driving stop and go at speeds up to 40 MPH.

IIRC you can adjust the estimate shown using VCDS. Just do some math and get yours where you want it to be.

I believe right at full up it read 535 miles and then 25 miles later on the highway it adjusted again and read 545. That is typical on my drive. Quite often when I get to work after driving 63 miles it will read around 520 miles dte

    Filled up the S6 today.
With 75 miles left on the DTE indicator. I had traveled 223 total miles. The DTE indicator after fill-up was 395 miles.
So it overestimated by roughly 100 miles or 33%. (Worse if I kept going to zero DTE.) So even with the consumption level changed to allow for more accurate Average MPG reading over a tankful, the DTE indicator still wildly overestimates.
Not quite as bad as Larry's 52% but still not good. Nothing really new though.

Weird, I’m going to reach out to the shop to see if there is an update to the APR software.
