4.0T With EPC Light On and Check Engine Light Flashing

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I drove the car last weekend and it ran perfectly. Yesterday, I went to turn it on and the EPC light came on and the Check Engine Light started to flash.
It felt like a misfire as the engine wasn't running smooth. I didnt scan it yet, didnt have a chance to.

Based on my research, it seems like this is a possibility that the turbos have gone bad. As this is my main fear, how do i tell if this is the case? Last month i visually inspected the turbos and they had very minimal play and looked in great condition.

Please advise to what i should check?

    year?
    mileage?

you should limit (or even better not) drive your car until you know what it is.
a misfire that is bad enough to cause a flashing CEL is bad and shouldnt be driven.

a misfire will cause the EPC light to turn on.
common cause of misfire is ignition coil.

and god forbid it is turbos...its even worse to push them any further. they could "grenade" and you will end up with shrapnel in your engine, requiring a thorough flushing. if you catch them before they fail (completely) they should still be in one piece, just with sloppy shaft play and rubbing on the housing. less change of engine failure in the future.

with some mechanic ability, you can remove the throttle body and the inlet tubes, and inspect the turbos. takes under 1 hr. to do with proper tools. if not, have it towed to the dealer/shop.
if you have a MY13-14 with 50k+ miles, id be hesitant to even start for fear of bad turbos. so checking for bad coils proves to be difficult.

even though you checked 1 month ago, failure due to oil starvation (the 4.0t problem) is an all or nothing issue. they can go from perfect to bad within a minute without proper oil flow.

I had this about a month ago. Misfire that just wouldn't clear.

I was about 5 minutes away from a small town so took the decision to limp there for help, but as I drove the car got smooth again, lights went off and I was able to clear the code.

    Hasn't reoccurred since, touch wood.

That’s dirt, it cam off easy. And there was very minimal shaft play, almost nothing. I considered it to be normal for the miles. The driver side turbo had a little bit of oil residue on the fins.

oil in the drivers sides compressor housing is normal.

swap the coil from plug 1 to another location. if the misfire follows to the new location, the coil is your problem.

if the coil is the problem, it is recommended to replace them all as a set.

Since apperently shaftplay is okey (good thing you inspected that first as safety)...i would suggest you log the misfires per cilinder (individually).
Only a 'big' amount of misfires in sort distance triggers a DIS/MIL error (if not mistaken 100 misfires per cyclus?). The amount per cilinder might give you a better idea witch one is giving (more) issues, but definatly write the amount for each cilinder on a note so you have a timestamp for future logging.
Last time you replaced plugs/coils? Stock or tuned?
*maybe silly but still lots of fuel in tank or ran it low day before you tanked....as that made my car run bit not smooth day after.

Looking at those screenshots you had 1 misfire fault in cylinder 1 which triggered Random/Multiple Cylinder misfire and ultimately ended in the cylinder(fuel injector) being disabled.
Here's a list of things to check:
    Spark plugs
    Ignition coils
    Intake leaks
    Fuel pressure
    fuel injectors
fuel quality...did you refill recently from an unusual station?
I'd start with cylinder 1 (Pass. side front) as that is the only one shown in the faults.

    Guys,

Thanks for your input. All helpful suggestions.

I didn't have alot of time to look into this further when the misfire happened, but from past experience, the engine ran as if it had a bad coil. At this point i dont know what caused it to pull these random misfire codes.

I purchased the car about two months ago, so i really dont know the service history exactly. But by running carfax, it shows that its time to change the spark plugs.

It is stock for what i see, there is no way to know it for the software?!

Yesterday i turned it on and ran it for a while. Ran without a problem. I deleted the codes and then ran it some more. I will take it for a spin over the weekend, but now i am hesitant. lol
