    Clock Spring Question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

I ordered a new steering wheel for my b8 avant, wanted to get paddles. When I was changing the wheel the clock spring wasn't lined up with the holse on the wheel, so I pressed in the red clickable tab on the clockspring and rotated it enough for my steering wheel to fit. After that, ESP and ABS light came on. I have obdeleven and everything is showing no connection from steering angle sensor. I tried to do the G85 calibration and no luck, kepts getting an error saying not all prerequisites are met. I think the issue is that the clock spring isn't at the correct starting point or it might be out of position. Does anyone have any experience on this or know how to set the clockspring to the right spot? Figured i'd try here before going to the dealer. Thanks in advance!

Your clock spring is toast. You have to be very careful removing and installing it. If it turns while removed you basically opened the circuit inside and there’s no going back. Ask me how I know ;)

Yeah, you might have killed the clock spring. That shouldn't have moved at all during installation.

Maybe try to scan it with VCDS and try to adapt it that way.

Hard to believe it's broken...all the steering wheel controls and horn are still functional. Vagcom still shows reading when turning the wheel (degree changes). I think it might just be misaligned but I have no way of knowing if it needs to rotate.

That red button doesn’t do anything.
    Figure anything out yet?

No progress...but essentially when I installed the wheel I pressed that red button in, turned the clock spring, then put the wheel on the teeth then the lights came on. My thinking is that the spring is out of turn. Like needs to be turned 2 times to the right or something? Before I can run the g85 sensor callibration. No markings on the clock spring to determine if it's out of sync or not though.

If you turn it too far, you will physically break the connection inside. If you installed it one or two turns out of center, then turned the steering wheel, you will have turned the clock spring too far.

What codes do you have in VCDS?

I'm confused with why the ring was turned at all. Watching the end of this video, it seems the old wheel should have come off and the new wheel should have gone on, without any fuss. www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2AX4Xw8sjQ
The steering wheel post has splines on the inside to mate to the steering shaft, and two guide pins on the outside to mate to the G85 code disc. It also has holes for the coil spring connector and two guide pins. The alignment of the guide slots on the G85 code disc and the the guide pins on the F138 coil spring should not have changed upon removal of the old wheel, but you're saying it did?

Regardless, if your horn is working and your steering wheel controls are working and you do not have any DTCs from the air bag module, your F138 coil spring is fine. Have you tried turning the wheel lock to lock to see if things stop working :-)

Did you say you were reading values for steering angle that seem correct? So it would seem your G85 steering angle sensor is working (I find it interesting that due to the redesign for the B8, the sensor now simply reads the steering wheel angle and not the actual steering column angle, should you put the wheel on lopsided). Does it read nearly 0 when you're tires are straight?

I wonder if the G85 code disc is locked to the F138 such that they can or cannot become no longer aligned. Or if that's only possible while the J527 is removed (which the repair manual is clear, the steering rack must be centered before removing or installing the J527). Or if it's not possible at all.

As for running the basic setting,

(you're not going to do the active steering basic setting, but the prereqs are only printed there, such as "is the engine running")
