    2014 S5 sunshade removal/replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So there was a thread here for the sunshade removal but that was for a 2010. The 2014 8.5's sunroof does not open, it only tilts.

Has anyone DIY to remove and repair or replace the sunshade? Mine is jammed up and doesn't work at all. The sunroof works fine the shade is stuck open.

From what I read, it seems this is a known problem.
I think I'll leave my sunshade alone lol

Same problem here on a '13 RS5. My '13 S5 is still good but I am very careful with it now. I'll have to tackle the RS5 someday.

Pretty easy to fix.. it’s about 7 torx screws in total. One located underneath the dome light and the rest are behind the trim pieces as you tilt the glass.

Great opportunity to clean the drain tubes as well.

Where are the drain tubes located? Do you have to take the trim piece out?

    Simple

    -Tilt glass
-Open the sunglass holder and locate the torx screw and remove it. Pull assembly down and you’ll see a smaller torx that’s attached to the glass remove that as well
-Locate the two plastic trim pieces on the rail of the panoramic glass
-Slide trim towards the rear of the car and then pull
-Remove the 6 torx screws, 3 on each side

Step out of the vehicle and pop the rubber trim that’s connected to the roof and lift the glass up. Drain tubes are located on each corner underneath the panoramic glass.

My sunshade wasn't even on the car when I got it and I noticed 2 broken sliding tabs on each side. Not sure if the sunshade is gone or of it rolled into the roof. Looking to open this up as well.

This is the OEM part number. You can find it on EBAY or through a local Audi dealer for less than $250.

Thank you. I will purchase one this week. How bad was the project? Anything to look out for? The 2 sliding tabs are also broken on mine which explains the missing sunshade

If you google that part number a few results will show the exploded part number breakout for the entire assembly. Ordered the my shad yesterday. Hope to tackle one day after work if received this week.

Ok - I jumped in last night thinking this was going to be difficult. Well in less than an hour I was done. Would have been faster but a little apprehensive. Here are some pics. S4Fever was right. It is pretty simple but I will add few details to make it easier. If you're semi-handy/mechanically inclined, this isn't a hard job at all. $250 for parts compared to over $1000 at the dealer.
1-Disconnect the side rubber deflectors from the sunroof to the body of the car.
2-Remove the cover pieces from each side from the inside of the sunroof (slide back to release). This will expose the 6 total screws holding the sides of the sunroof on. Remove the screws.
3-Remove the screw from the sunglass holder compartment. Drop the overhead console, no need to disconnect the wires, just let it hang. Locate small screw near the motor (see pic) and remove
You are done working from the inside of the car until re-installation
    4-Remove glass
5-Remove the 4 screws from the part covering the sunshade. Remove that part.
6-Remove the screws holding the guide wires that assist in sliding the sunshade (1 each side). These cables will retract (spring loaded) let them go to the rear of the car gently.
7-There are 2 silver flat head pins holding the sunshade in. One per side. I have close ups pics of these pins. Small screwdriver and pry them up and out.
8-Your sunshade is now loose - the brackets that are attached to the sunshade and hold in place will need to slide forward (the pins prevent them from sliding). I used a flat head and bumped them gently forward with my palm Once they are slid forward on each side your sunshade is loose and will come out.
To get pics message me. Not sure how to load them here.

    Re-assemble.

I wonder if my 2012 is that simple? It is tilt only also so I hope its the same. Mine was jammed and broken but i at least got it closed and looking okay. Didn't tackle it because I heard the install was a nightmare and I just didn't bother. If its fairly straight forward I will order one!

Took a quick peak earlier. The side rubber strips snap into the bottom and was easy to pop out/reinstall. Thats as far as i got, couldnt see how the entire piece comes out.

    2014 S5 sunshade removal/replacement

Anyone know what this is? Mounted in front under the glass assembly. Seems like a switch of sort. We put everything back together and nothing seems to not working. Unless the part that broke doesn’t affect its function.

With that said, the only issue we was getting the new screen to seat into place before the pins went in. The new part was a tighter fit. He had to file open the slots where the metal tabs sat into.

Yea ^ whatever that is, it still functions. The screw under the sunglass/counsel screws into that part and it pivots on 2 guide pins when the top is tilted up. I think its some kind of contact/switch.

I'm working on reupholstering my headliner, and removed the sunroof glass to also repair the sunshade. Broke this part too. Part number is 8T0898946, and its item #4 on the Audi parts diagram for the sunroof assembly.

If my half-assed repair attempt doesn't work, at least you can buy a replacement...

Thanks for the detailed instruction. I'm having trouble with the "cover pieces" or trim strips in step 2. They don't seem to simply slide back no matter how hard I pull. Afraid if I lever them off they will break. Any advice or could I get your photos Rappuhn?

Was wondering if anyone did this through a dealer and if so, how much labor they were quoted for? My local dealer said ~6 hours which I'm a bit skeptical of and was curious to hear from any of you on this.

Funny this was brought back. My new shade was sticking. If i did not cycle it every day it would get worse. Then one day i could not open it more than half way. I stopped messing with it, rather have it closed than open half way with fabric hanging down lol

Once again reviving this thread in the hopes that I can get a little clarity- I’d like to replace my sunscreen (2008 A5) but I can’t tell if the part 8T08773075L9 includes the long spindle and the metal guides glued to the sides of the actual fabric. I’ve sourced the part and I’m more than happy to spend the dough if I don’t have to reuse the long, thin metal guides (mine are shot) or do any glueing.

    Thanks!

I purchased the same part and it was the entire sunshade assembly, including the side mounts, the shade with wire spring sides and the aluminum handle that spans the width of the shade.

This project got bumped for something more pressing (transmission) but I’ll post photos when I get around to it. It’s pretty straightforward once you get the glass off, the only hiccup I had was finding the proper screw to release the front of the sunroof which was above the console once removed- I mistook a headline screw for that one. Just be careful when removing the glass, there should be very little resistance once you remove the six bolts from the arms as well as the rubber pieces along both sides.

Any one have an idea of what the glass weighs? My sunshade is all jacked up, and this thread has me wondering what it would take to replace the glass with some kind of removable top like a hard top or t-tops. With the size of the opening, it would be almost like having a convertible. Maybe when I replace the sunshade, I will drive it around with the glass out to see what its like. I'll have to wait for a nice day, but I think it'd be worth it.

Edit: I wasn't able to dig up a weight for the A5 panoramic roof; however, I found a post on another forum claiming someone from the Audi service team provided a weight of 102lbs for the panoramic roof of the S3/RS3. The pano roof of the S3/RS3 looks to be comparable to that of the A5 in pictures, but its hard to tell. Of course, that is a weight for the entire assembly not just the glass, but the glass must be the heaviest component by far.
