    Noob Question (Oil Changes/Service)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey Guys,

Got my car about 3 months ago. It was a used 2017 S6 with 6K miles on it. It came with Audi Care and all the warranties/maintenance pre-paid by previous owner. Im going to err on the side of caution and get oil changes every 3K miles. I have a stage 1 tune, air intake and exhaust. Plan to go all the way to stage 3 eventually. My question is Im approaching 10K miles now and want to get an oil change ASAP. If I go to Audi, do I need to reflash to stock? Im also reading that they can still find out by how many times the car has been flashed? To avoid this, can I go to non-audi places for oil changes? And how can one make sure they are using the right oil for my car (OEM) etc? Im in SoCal near OC.

    Thanks guys

Avoiding the dealership is kinda pointless, since if you ever go to use that warranty you paid extra for, they'll plug in and void your power train warranty on the car because of your flash. Doesn't matter if you flash back to stock, the dealership tools will still pick it up and flag you TD1.

Might as well bite the bullet and get the audi care services done by them, but if you want more frequent oil changes done outside of audi care you'll have to pay. So maybe a local indy shop will end up being cheaper for oil changes than the dealership for your 3/5k interval. Unless you are tracking it or doing very very short interval driving 3k is excessive. 5k is better. Get a used oil analysis from blackstone if you want science to tell you where your oil is at and how much longer you can stretch the interval out for.

Your engine probably wants an oil that meets VW 502 00 standard. Any shop worth their snuff will know what spec of oil your car calls for and be able to order it in for you.

So do you worry about warranty or oil changes+ service ? I usually get oil change every 5k at Audi dealership. Oil + filter + labor about $100 for my Q5 ( if I’m not wrong) and $120 for my RS7. I usually get $20 off coupon for oil change. Oil change and service will pay by you or pre paid by Audi care, so I think it’s nothing done with the warranty. Sorry if I’m wrong. It’s my opinion

Buy an oil extractor and do it yourself at whatever interval you want.

use audicare for the 10k oil change interval.
Supplement with 5k oil changes in between. DIY or at a independent shop.

Your tune is a toss up if you'll have warranty for major repairs. if they do a scan, they will most likely see it has been tuned, regardless if you flash back to "stock" before going to the dealer.

you want to use oil approved fro European cars, i think it's 502.00 spec. any reputable shop will know what oil to use. and if you DIY, there's many brands that make approved oil; I prefer mobil 1 Eurpoean. you can get it by 5qt jugs at Walmart for about $25.

Speaking of Audi Care, I just bought an RS7 and I'm looking at the list of things they "do" and it all seems rather overpriced and a bunch of rather pointless things. Seems cheaper to just do the oil change yourself or have a local independent you trust do it. Thoughts?

Most of the items are basic and can be done for cheap, but if you pay for service (even at an independent shop) the spark plugs and diff fluid change make it worth the money.
The service records also carry some value for resale.

Audi maintenance plan calls for a 10K oil interval change and there have been oil analysis reports posted up on Audizine where Blackstone Labs confirmed the oil was good for 10K and recommended stretching out to 12K or more. There is a big crowd on here that push for a 5K interval change on the 4.0 to help prevent clogging the oil screen and roaching the turbo's however it seems that is not exactly fool proof though. There are a few posts about roaching the turbo's still with a 5K change.

For some reason the sludge tends to accumulate on the oil screen. Audi has re-designed it many times and is up to rev G. So far it seems that rev G is the best option out there but I don't think there is enough data miles to say it is the final solution.

The motor should go 10K on changes if you want to gamble on it. You are not wrong with a 5K change though either. 3K? That seems excessive given that synthetic oil is designed to last up to 15K miles for most applications. I believe that an OEM filter is actuall a Mann or Mahle filter which carry a 10K interval. There are many other options that are designed for far less and people will unknowingly use them.

Bottom line is all we can do is make recommendations and you as the owner have to make the final decision.

Only take it to the delaership for the 15-25-35k service intervals. When you do, be up front with your service advisor and tell him/her the car is modified, and you'd appreciate it if they did not hook it up for diagnostics. Most places will honor this and you'll be fine. If they won't honor that, then take it elsewhere. Do the 5k oil changes in between those visits either on your own or at an indy shop you trust. The audicare is worth it for the plugs, the transmission fluid, and diff fluid services, which are expensive as hell otherwise.

For my R8 yes...I have Audi Care (got it from previous owner) and for an "exotic" car yes I think it adds some value. The RS7 is just a fancy A7 at the end of the day and even though it's special to "us" for the prospective buyer down the road I really don't see a care or need for the service records. $1000 for basically 4 oil changes and to look at an air filter...

similar in looks only. drivetrain is 100% different. and that's all Audicare cares about.

    4 oil changes
    look at air filter 2x
    replace diff fluid
    replace tranny fluid
    replace spark plugs

    change brake fluid 2x

    Audicare is about $1000.
if serviced by Audi, the 3 bold items make up for the value.

if i was buying a used RS7, I would 100% pass or lowball a car if service records couldn't be provided. cost of repairs on these cars for lack of maintenance can break the bank.

Okay I'll look at itemized pricing. Mine was a 2018 CPO and had it's initial service already done so I know I'm good there. My GT-R (that I replaced with the RS7) dealer wanted $200++ for oil change, performance shops wanted $100-$120. My local independent shop...$24.95 + I bring in oil ($50) so cost me $75 and every 4th change was free so it was probably less than even that.

So with that said I know end of the day the dealer is always more expensive than independent shop or DIY so I'll see itemize it out but I'll see. I have two months until next service is due to decide.

Never thought about doing it myself. What about the oil filter? Hard to reach or change out?

Easy to change oil filter on ramps. Remove lower panel cover. There is a small allen head screw to allow draining the filter housing before removal.
Use a 32mm socket to remove oil filter housing.

There are one O-ring for the filter one O-ring for the housing & one O-ring for the small drain screw.

The oil filter housing drain plug torque is 4NM (3 ftlbs).

oil filter housing torque spec. is 25N (18.4 ftlbs)

    The 4.0T uses:

Oil filter (Mann) Audi OEM 079198405D

    8.7L (9.2qt) VW 502 oil

On my A7 the filter is on top near windshield so no need for ramps. Just unscrew filter, warm engine, suck out oil ,replace filter and add oil......then dump oil at autozone for free. Or buy oil at FCP Euro that has lifetime warranty on everything change oil then mail it back for a refund

Something to keep in mind when using the oil extractor is the capacity, since the s6 uses almost 9 quarts.

If you have a smaller than 9 quart syphon to begin with you just need an extra empty jug then Just have to dump part way through

If Audi is saying and oil analysis from some members are saying that the oil and filter is good for 10K then you could probably get by with replacing just the oil at 5K. Really could get it done very quick with an oil extractor and not have to mess with the ramps/pan etc. Personally I have race ramps and don't mind tinkering but if you were in a hurry....
