    BG EPR Treatment for the 3.0 V6

    I was thinking of running some BG EPR through my engine this weekend and was wondering if I should drop the belly pan and pull the drain plug or will I be okay with a suction pump for getting the old out. My concern is leaving too much chemical in the bottom of the pan.

    Thoughts?

    Read about others doing it, thought maybe about doing it since it probably has never been done to the motor. I'm at 181,000 miles. For the first 145,000 miles of its life it has had a steady diet of what ever the dealer uses for synthetic oil. Since we bought it I have fed it Mobil 1 euro synthetic.

    When I had my S4 with the 3.0T, I found the topside extractor did a fine job of getting the oil pan pretty clean. Just be very careful you don't over insert the hose and get it stuck. I've read several horror stories that I thankfully avoided.

    That said, I don't know that you really need to both with the BG. I'm considering it for my next change, but this is on my S6 with the oil strainer issues and the resulting blown turbos. I don't know of a similar issue with the 3.0 S/C engine.

    Mobil1 is not the best choice for oil. It was downgraded to s Group III oil 12 years ago.
    Lets give a few other options consideration.
    Let's try Liquimoly Leichtlauf 5W40 or Motul 8100 X-Cess 5W40. Try 5k miles oil change intervals.
    And most of all, you absolutely need to get a carbon cleaning done. The best, quickest and most effective means is through media blasting with walnut shells. Your dealer doesn't subscribe to this as they are bound by corporate to promote only BG products which don't work.
    Walnut shell carbon cleaning will do many things. It'll restore lost power and performance. Improve morning starts. Restore a smoother constant idle and improve mileage. At your mileage, you should be on your second carbon cleaning.

    Thanks. I cannot say if the engine has ever been carbon cleaned or not to be honest.

    However, morning starts it will fire in about 1 second and run smooth all day long at the moment. Today on my normal commute to work every day, my first 10 miles is 25 to 55 MPH followed by 55 miles of 55 - 85 MPH and the last mile at 30 MPH or less, I got an average of 29 MPG. I believe my readout was an average speed between 60 and 65 MPH. I bring the engine up to temp in 10 - 15 minutes and then run it for an hour each way or more. Basically it seems my driving habits are doing a pretty good job of keeping it clean enough.

    You driving routine is doing a good job of minimizing carbon build up but it will never prevent it. All it means is that you may see longer intervals between carbon cleanings compared to someone who is strictly city use. You cannot escape getting a carbon cleaning. It is routine necessary maintenance item just like fluid changes and brake changes. It is inherent on all direct injected engines from about 2007 till about 2018, Audi included.
    I get the distinct impression you feel you can avoid a carbon cleaning by applying other actions - you cant. It's unavoidable no matter what other types of service you employ.

    This VW/Audi mechanic will tell you specifically that BG fluids do not work. Only intake manifold off cleanings work.
    Manual hand cleaning or media blasting with walnut shells.

    While I agree that you most likely are in need of Carbon Cleaning the intake valves, it has nothing to do with Valpo A7's original inquiry. EPR is intended to clean stuck piston rings that cause excessive blow-by and oil burning and can help with the commons issue on the 2.0 and 3.0 motors so to call it a snake oil is very misleading. BG makes a lot of products so you may be thinking of 44K and not EPR. I was an Audi Tech for 15 years and I swear by BG products generally but I would agree that that their intake cleaning products are nowhere near as effective as media blasting the valves in GDI motors but again, that has nothing to do with EPR and it's abilty to restore some compression form the rings sticking....

    And Audi will tell you that engine oil is good for 10k miles and trans and diff fluids are good for the life of the vehicle.... so I tend to take anything that ANY auto manufacturer says with a healthy dose of skepticism and do my own research.

    BG Products are anything but snake oil. They are not a miracle workers either, but overall they do what they say they'll do with generally acceptable results.

    BG products have never failed me... but every application is unique and YMMV, so do your own testing and use what works best for your individual situation!

    Ha! Someone dug up my old thread.

    I never ran the BG stuff through the engine. Shortly after this thread I made the switch to Liquimoly 4W40 oil and ran that until I traded the car in at 234,000 miles. At some point I got the service records from the dealer and did see that the previous owner had an Audi dealer carbon cleaning done around 105,000 miles. I never had it done in the the next 120,000 or so miles and the engine ran like a champ. At 204,000 miles I had to replace all 4 timing chains and inspected the valves at the time and share pics with GK1 who said they did not look that bad at all.

    Fall 2022 I was having issues with running rough on a work trip and ran 2 tanks of fuel injector cleaner through the engine and all was good again after that.

    December 2023 I traded it in on a used Maserati Ghibli and have been enjoying that ever since. 2015 Maserati Ghibli SQ4 with just under 13,000 miles.
