    Color Matching - Daytona Grey

    So...

Somebody clipped my 2 months old SQ5 Daytona Grey Pearl Effect - I was thinking that since the car had minimal weather exposure, paint match will be nearly perfect. Hell... I couldn’t be further from the truth. LZ7S is completly different shade of color and now I am going through anxiety about getting it done, since I don’t know how to get the doors back to perfection... anyone had experience with matching this color and achieved near perfect effects? I already know spot painting won’t do the truck, but I want to make sure shop gets all the info they need so I don’t have to listen to “this is a touch up work, you got to understand that it won’t be perfect”...

IDK if it's just me or because the picture is not large enough, but where is the damage? If it is very minimal I would just see if PDR and a good paint correction would be better/less invasive than a whole re-spray.

Are you using the factory paint code on the drivers door to match your color? I have a local source that can always match factory colors. They are a specialty co. that does only touch up work or small panels. Have used them for many yrs. Always dead on.

Any pearl will be extremely hard to color match 100% although it’ll be very hard to spot to the untrained eye. Had my Evo resprayed after some vandalism which was also pearl. I couldn’t tell the difference but my friends dad who did paint work could see a minor difference in one area. Had to be in the right lighting and you had to be right in front of the panels.

I had a similar issue when trying to match Mythos Black Metallic on my SQ5. I tried multiple colors and had no luck. I was being stubborn and wanted the rock chips to be fixed immediately. I finally gave up and ordered genuine Audi touch up paint though ebay. I ordered the kind that came in a small bottle rather than the pen style. It will come with the paint in one bottle and the clear coat in another. I then applied, wet sanded and polished, its as close to factory as its ever going to get without getting the hood resprayed.

It's worth asking the paint shops you're considering about their process. Armed with the paint code and VIN, they'll be able to not only match the color but also the batch code(s) from the original paint. The challenge then becomes one of expertise, and if it's done right you'll be the only one to ever know...and even then you'll need a magnifying lens to confirm. Honestly, the real difference will be in the clear coat, and even that will only be noticeable during any paint correction efforts.

Bottom line: with the right shop, you have no worries. Might be worth focusing on shops that specialize on German vehicles. FWIW, Mercedes and BMW both have colors that make matching Daytona seem like a walk in the park by comparison.

Not sure where in NY you are but J&B body works might be one of the best options.

Very easy to match, you will have to blend into the front door and use “base coat blender” before painting to lay metallics on wet and it will blend in nicely
