Why wasn't RS6 sold in USA?

I really wanted to buy this car for such a long time. Why nobody was selling it here in the USA? What was the issue and why they sell the new model now?
I will be honest. I am not fan of new RS6. Just the way it looks.. I love previous model..

They figured there was no market for it. North Americans don't buy wagons - we buy SUV's.

I believe the C7 met our crash regulations but they're was still no market for it.

Anything before C7 didn't meet our specs so they never brought it over and it wasn't worth the investment to safety it for the US/CAN.

I never understood that part - they certified the A6 and S6 - even the wagons - but wouldn't do the RS's.

I guess if you're only going to sell 200 of them, what's the point?

2020 RS6 avant is coming to US soon, if you can afford one
RS-anything, but especially larger size, especially in the era of SUV, especially in the truck-driving country such as US, is a very limited market product.
Wish they recreate RS2 with longitudal 5 cyl engine, and proper quattro.

It is rarely about crash tests, in the way that most people think about crash regulations. All the parts to make them meet safety regulations exist.. in the cars that are legal for sale in the US. Manufactures don't crash test every version of every car for every country, they simply certify and pinky swear everything is what it is supposed to be.

The C5 RS6 Avant is legal in the US, if you change a handful of things unrelated to crash testing them. It qualified as "close enough" due to having the RS6 sedan and the wagons you mentioned which they submitted the results for their testing internal testing for so they figured the RS6 avant is close enough.

Same goes for the C5 RS4. Never actually looked to see if the C6 was on the list, don't think it is. Basically someone has to petition for it and identify the changes needed.. Edit.. oops was thinking c6 was NA v10 and that it was kind of boring.. That v10 TT was not in anything in the US so in the case of the C6 something like that would need to be federalized not just the safety stuff.

There are 100s of cars that you can actually legally import before 25 years with a few simple changes like windshield glass and headlights because a legal US version exists. The process is not cheap so people don't bother.

To market, sell, maintain, and have parts for 200 cars, that is the problem and that is where the cost just simply doesn't make sense.

US wagon sales are actually up, significantly, still a tiny segment in the grand scheme of things but up none the less. Probably a factor in why we are finally seeing it in wagon form.

For Canada the C5 S6/Rs6 avants didn't meet standards due to the child seat attachment points in the rear seat. The C6 Rs6 didn't have a return-less fuel system so it didn't meet evaporative emissions.
