Low profile tires - Cross-country road trip

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm currently running Bridgestone 255/30R19 square on the RS3 and contemplating a cross-country road trip from NC to CA which would be approx. a 6K mile round trip. Has anyone else gone this far on 30 series tires? If so, how was your overall experience with your low profile tires? I'll probably pass through Los Angeles and then up to Sacramento and I know there will be a lot of shitty roads along the way. I may end up taking my C63s with 35 series tires but it's on stock suspension and I'd feel less worried about bending a new rim on the trip. I'm leaning towards taking the RS3 because it's a blast to drive more so than the benz.

Just get a set of 18s. There is literally no advantage to 19s on this platform.

Damn Montreal, awful for me too :(

I have a bubble on a front OEM tire on staggered setup, what do you recommend as replacement ?
Are the Michelin worth the $2000?

The greatest defense against wheel damage is paying attention. I am constantly amazed while being a passenger how most drivers just drive over whatever is ahead of them. I can be driving with my wife, point out a pothole to her, only for her to drive straight over it.

I'd drive the C63 and save yourself the stress...OR at least pack a spare tire in the trunk in case of a flat.

Sounds exactly like my wife! Sometimes she course-corrects and makes a beeline straight for the pothole. Now I try to not even say anything about it or I'll just sit there with my eyes closed pretending to be asleep while she drives. I seriously can't stand the way she drives. LMAO

Over the week of July 4, I drove over 3,500+ miles in my stock 2019 from Manhattan through NJ, PA, MD, VA, NC, TN (incl. the Tail of the Dragon), MS, AR, MO, IA, MN, ND, MT, WY, ID, NV, then CA. Given the frequency of threads here about how shitty the stock tires are, I've been watching mine closely but so far, so good. (Knock on wood!)

Like you, P5stunna, I was initially worried about wheel or tire damage, especially driving through remote stretches of the south and the west. But like TheContrarian said, as long as you're paying attention, you should be good. Surprising to me was that most remote areas of the country had excellent roads (ie, least chance of damage) whereas all of the big cities had awful roads. In other words, where you're most-likely to encounter an issue is in a populated area where you'll have better odds at finding someone who can help.

    Good luck!

Hard to say as you can't predict road debris/condition. We did a 2000+ mile roadtrip without an issue including some unplanned offroading, only to run over a giant pothole that I couldn't avoid that put a bubble in one of our tire a week later after our roadtrip

I'm probably being overly paranoid as I already drive scanning the road all the time and I can even spot nails on the road at highway speeds so I think I'll be fine. The 35-series sidewalls on the benz aren't that much taller and neither are the stock pirellis. Besides, what good are wheels/tires if I am too worried to use them. Sort of like living life.

The rim looks fine in the pic. Was it bent?

    This this this.

Roads here are miserable even now when it’s the best it gets all year. I spend most of my time staring 30 feet in front of the car keeping watch. It sucks driving like this but I’ve been trained to do so out of necessity over the years. Been pretty successful avoiding major wheel damage for the most part.

If it was it is hard to tell. Wheel performs fine after the tire was replaced.

    To the OP,

I am running 235/40/18 on Neuspeed RS-10 on Michelin super sport. The car is more comfortable, quieter and I feel that it handles better in my opinion. The OEM 19" pirellis were clunky, loud, harsh. I just did a 3000 mile trip last month with an average of high 27 mpg but (85-87 mph) through the desert of AZ and deserted long roads of East Texas.

Should have went with 245/35/19 Rubbers. Mine feel so much better then the 30 profile with stock.
