    2017 SQ5 20inch Wheel Question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello!

I just bought a 2017 SQ5 with stock 20 inch wheels and am not a fan of the wheels on the car. I'm pretty new to mods (even wheels) and was hoping to clarify a few questions.

How do 21/22 inch wheels affect the ride quality, handling, price of tires etc. I'm not interested in lowering the suspension at all but am a bit interested in a larger wheel look, but not if it compromises ride quality or results in super expensive tires.

Does anyone have experience buying aftermarket OEM wheels off eBay? The pair I'm looking at is linked below.

    Thank you in advance!!

Larger wheels will make the ride quality generally worse as the side walls are shorter and necessarily stiffer. 21s probably not that bad, 22s I would guess would be pretty rough and would be too big for me personally anyway.

If they are still the 21x8.5" wheel size, there are limited tire options if I remember correctly and they tend to be pricier to run good tires.

Honestly, I'd probably find a relatively reliable brand to put my $60k car on vs no name eBay wheels. Hartmann wheels makes Audi replicas and they would probably be one of my first suggestions for looking at reasonably priced aftermarket wheels.

For some reason my iPad will not open your link. But, I came here to suggest that you stay with 20” rims.

I have the 20” summer tire package on my ‘17 S-Line, probably the same rims as yours. While I like them, if I did not, I’d still stick with 20’s with replacement rims.

21’s have fewer choices for tires, they are more expensive, and with the lower aspect ratio, the sidewalls will be less, stiffer, and ride quality worse. 22s even more so. And a 21” rim will be heavier than the same rim in a 20”. Metal is heavier than rubber, too so your unsprung weight, important to handling, will be worse with a 21” compared to the same rim and tire combo in a 20”.

It’s your car, get what you like, but you are right when you have concerns about larger rims.

10x21" are a pretty safe bet as 21"s were a sock option and 10" are wide enough for 295's. If you want a nice OEM+ look, find some 21" peelers from the preios-gen Q7 (4L)< and use s the apropriate adapter/spacers for a perfect fitment. There is a guy on here that just did this setup and it rocks. i'd link you to that thread if I could remember where it is, but mybe he'll see this post and belly-up to he bar with us.

Yeah I am lowered on KW Street Comfort coilovers. And FYI, the tires here are 265/45/20. They are .3" taller than 255/45 option but I like how they fill the wheel well a bit better and I have more sidewall. No spacers or clearance issues here either.

They look great. Do you think these would fit the stock Goodyear Excellence 255/45/20 from the factory?

I'd eventually upgrade to all season (in New England) 265's. Any recs?

For what it’s worth, I had a similar set of 20” on my 2018 Q5 2.0 TFSI Sport, but didn’t really like the look.

So, on Friday I traded them (and the original 20’s) and paid a little more to move to these...

21x9 ET30 with 265/40 Tyres. Took a gamble on Atturo tyres AZ850’s as I couldn’t afford anything else, and truth be told I don’t need super performance down here in Australia - cops all over the place. So far, so good...

I’m loving the 21’s look and the ride is great.

Not sure which 20" wheels you have, but I have standard "split 5 spoke" wheels which I believe are rather plain looking. After a lot of thought I had them powder coated gloss black. This made a real change. Great look & even get compliments. Took off crappy Pirelli's & put on Conti stock size 245/45/20 DWS-06. Have also added H&R lowering springs. I include this info to let you know that I not only get improved handling but still a good ride. Also saved a lot of $$$$.

Quick question, I see that the 275/45/20 Conti DWS 06 are slightly cheaper than the 265/45/20s. Do you know if the 275s would fit the wheels?

Unfortunately, a 275 is not recommended for a 9" wide wheel. Second, it has a smaller rolling diameter so you will be putting more miles on your odometer compared to what you have actually driven. Third, if you'd like to save some money, maybe just go with a 255/45/20? Not sure the 10mm in width is that much of a gain overall for the cost difference, but personally, I think a 255 on a 9" wheel, mounted on an SUV looks a little weak. Also, I wanted to extra sidewall for our roads around here and to fill the wheel well a bit better.

Follow up question. Michelin AS3+ OR Conti DWS06? Both 265/45/20. The Michelin's are surprisingly cheaper. I live in Boston with cold temps and snow a part of life in the winter.

    Thanks!

Really a toss up, personally tho I'd go with the Michelin's as they are a slightly better all around tire. The DWS06 tend to be a bit on the noisier side.

The DWS06 's are little nosier than my Pirelli Cinturato. Ironically, Continental in-general has made noisier tires than Pirelli's and Michelin's, but for all-season tires at a decent price, I can't complain

I'm wondering how the grip is with the Michelin AS3's. Does anyone have a direct comparison to the DWS06 in that regard? Dry & wet?

My OEM summer tires were in need of replacement. I needed to switch to an a/s and went with the A/S 3+ due to this data.

The AS3+ dry grip is actually better. Hard to believe right? They seem to be a bit more rigid too. I cannot tell a difference in wet and I've done 3 digit very wet air strip and wet twisty runs on both. But they do not last nearly as long from my experience. Hardly any better than most summer tires. I kinda feel like the AS3+ is basically as close as you can get to a summer that will not turn into bricks in the cold. I currently run them on my SQ and R. I still think the DWS is the better overall tire unless someone feels the DWS could use more dry performance. But in 275-295, it takes some work to get the DWS to complain as we both know.

Yes. Excellent. That's what I was wondering. I haven't had any AS3+, but it sounds like they're a "sport-winter" tire. Good review, Ben.

My main concern would be mild snow and overall comfort (tire noise, pothole impacts) as I won't be heading to the track routinely.. From what I understand, the Conti's are superior in this regard? I'd hate to be sliding around in the snowy roads of Boston in my new, expensive SQ5! XD

Also, does anyone have real life experience with the tread life difference for these two?

Thanks everyone for the comments :)

I'm on my third set of DWS 06 and they've all worn surprisingly well.

The DWS is far superior in the snow. For longevity I feel the DWS will go at least 5K more miles. And if you beat on the AS3+ they go really quick, where the DWS do not. Most will not realize the extra dry grip from the AS3+ so you'd select them for smooth/quiet, but the DWS are certainly not loud or rough. The AS3+ are simply a bit better in that regard.
