2012 Audi A7 fault codes with VCDS scan info

So i have been having the check engine light coming on this week. I read the codes out earlier in the week and cleared them just to make certain it was not a fluke because despite the codes the car is still running very strong and still gets 28 - 30 MPG on the highway. Recently I ran some fuel with Tech Ron (or however it is spelled) through the engine and just filled with 93 octane as well.

I cleared the codes and then started up the car this last time and the check engine light was out but after scanning again the speed sensor faults were back but not tripping the light.

BUT . . . the codes persist. Here is a stripped down version of the log ( I removed all the no fault)

I am really only worried about the engine codes. The others are seem to be just nuisance codes.

ANY AND ALL HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.

P0087 Fuel Rail/System Pressure- Too Low
Fuel Rail Control Valve functional check: Stuck open
    -rail pressure <0.80 [MPa] {In your case appears to be .47734 MPa}
    *Check fuel pressure
*Check the Fuel Metering Valve - N290
The Engine Control Module (ECM) - J623- regulates Fuel Metering Valve - N290- directly at the High Pressure Fuel Pump to control the low pressure flow inside the High Pressure Fuel Pump.
    ---To check---
    • Fuses OK.
    • Battery voltage OK
    • Switch OFF All and electronic accessories
    • Vehicles with Auto. Transmission, ensure Selector Lever position is in “P”.
    • Vehicles with Manual Transmission, ensure Shifter Lever position is in “N” with Parking Brake applied.
    • Coolant Temperature: ≥ 20 °C.
    Check#1
    IGNITION: OFF
    • DISCONNECT: Fuel Metering Valve - N290- connector
    • CHECK: Fuel Metering Valve - N290- component connector terminals 1 to 2 for resistance.
    • SPECIFIED VALUE: 1.5 to 11 Ω (± / 0.5 Ω @ approx. 20° C)
---If no good REPLACE: Fuel Metering Valve - N290-
    Check#2
    IGNITION: ON
    • CHECK: Fuel Metering Valve - N290- connector terminal 1 to ground.
    • SPECIFIED VALUE: Battery voltage
    • IGNITION: OFF
If no good CHECK/Repair: wiring for open, high resistance, short or connector for damage, corrosion, loose or broken terminals

The Fuel Metering Valve - N290 is on the high pressure fuel pump, so be careful and follow de-pressurizing procedures if you plan to replace it yourself.
If the sensor is ok then one of the pumps might be going.

The other two codes are related to Crankshaft/Camshaft position sensors.
    P0016 Crankshaft Position-Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor A (G40)
    P0018 Crankshaft Position-Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 2 Sensor A (G163)
Using the signal from the Camshaft Position Sensor - G40- , the precise position of the camshaft relative to the crankshaft is determined very quickly when the engine is started. Used in combination with the signal from the Engine Speed Sensor - G28- , the signal from the Camshaft Position Sensor - G40- allow to detect which cylinder is at TDC. The fuel can be injected into the corresponding cylinder and ignited.
    ---To check---
    • Fuses OK.
    • Battery voltage OK
    • Switch OFF All and electronic accessories
    • Vehicles with Auto. Transmission, ensure Selector Lever position is in “P”.
    • Vehicles with Manual Transmission, ensure Shifter Lever position is in “N” with Parking Brake applied.
    • Coolant Temperature: ≥ 80 °
    Check G40 or G163 sensor
    • DISCONNECT: Camshaft Position Sensor - G40 or G163- connector
    • IGNITION: ON
    • CHECK: Camshaft Position Sensor - G40 or G163- connector terminals 1 to 3 for voltage
    • SPECIFIED VALUE: About 5.0 V
    • IGNITION: OFF.

I've deliberately left out the check where they mention to remove the ECM as I doubt anyone will do that...

Both sensors appear to be in the left side of the engine as you face it one on the cam end the other on the connection out to the cam near the fuel metering valve N290.
So I'm thinking something is wrong with the wiring in that area...
Hopefully that helps you track do the issue.

Thank you. Could a battery going bad cause any of this? I have read other posts that others pointed to the battery throwing random codes. I am second owner of the car and it very well might be the original battery.

Anything could be possible...Why not take a look at it and see if there is any date code on it. If it's original replace it and go from there.
Just strange those three items are in close proximity to each other...was any other work done in that area?

No work at all. I last changed oil at 173,000 miles. I bought the car with 142,000 on it and the only work I have done on it is oil changes and front brakes

I have looked all over the battery short of removing it from the car and I can find no date code at all on it. Makes me wonder if its original and now has 7+ years on it and 180,000 miles.

The only thing I can find on it is

    Update on the car.

I found a few sensors around the engine bay that were not completely clipped. They were pushed on but the keeper was not clicked down. I reseated the fuel rail sensor and I found 1 of the CMPs that was not clipped in as well. The cam sensor at the front of the engine on the driver side. I removed the sensor to see its condition and all seemed okay so I cleaned it off and re-installed it.

So for now the only Module 01 code returning is:

Bank 1: CMP Sensor (G40) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
    P0016 00 [237] - Incorrect Correlation

I called the dealer to see if the previous owner had ever replaced the battery and discovered that it has not been replaced. Somehow my original battery is 7+ years old with 180,000 miles on the car. Before I replace it I am gonna read up on how to test the battery with VCDS. Dealer quoted me $263 for the OEM battery and another $250 in labor to install and code.

Now from my reading it seems that there are more than 1 CMP Sensors on the car but my old eyes can't find any sensors other than the 1 at the front driver side so far.

Would someone please educate my stupid arse on where the bank 1 sensor is. Since it cleared I am assuming that the front driver side is bank 2 sensor.

Hmmm. the clips shouldn't just sporadically come undone like that. It sounds as if the original owner may have had some work done.
At 7 years and 180k miles I wouldn't even bother testing the battery. Just replace it...it will die and at the worst possible time for you according to Murphy.
Since I was just researching some battery stuff I know it is possible to get OE batteries down to about $200 so it can't hurt to ask for a discount.
In your case they are actually asking over MSRP of $223 (new p/n is 000915105DL) online sources have it for $190 but no shipping, and then of course their obscene labor charge to code it. (Seeing as you have VCDS...you can code it yourself.) Or you can look for a Pep Boys sale and buy a Bosch that fits and save even more. (Be sure to fully charge the new battery before installing...and as usual be careful yada yada yada.)
The nice top tier Bosch Platinum AGM is on sale right now for $146 assume you currently have an AGM battery in the car.

As for the sensor G40 it should be on the passenger's side sticking out of the round camshaft adjuster just at the front of the head/valve cover.
Ignore the yellow marker in this picture (borrowed) the G40 should be right there on the lower left of the picture. Just left of the supercharger pulley you can see the three wires coming out of the connector.
