    AC Compressor shaft removal

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Since returning from my vacation, I had the best week driving my S4. Everything was perfect and life was grand . Not to let me off to lightly, my AC compressor seized up yesterday leaving me with no AC in the 100+ heat.
The car is in the service position and I was able to remove the compressor, but the cone shaped piece is still attached to the drive shaft and will not budge.
My manual says to hold the shaft still and rotate the cone piece anti clockwise, but nothing.

A; Am I trying to rotate the cone is the correct direction.
B; What else should I try.

    Thanks

ant-clockwise when looking from the front of the car yes.
ive had this problem too, I stuck a wrench on the shaft and locked it against the frame. and used a breaker bar to get the part of. But it might be safer to just remove the shaft and work on it outside the car, because you don't want to accidentally turn the shaft

Penetrating oil and a torch to heat up the connection. I had to to hold heat on it for at least 3-4 minutes to break it loose.

    Velox,
Do you know how it is removed by chance. That would be much easier.

Yes if you remove the rubber boot/cover it should simply slide out

The shaft should just pull out from the block at this point. There isn't anything holding it in.

I just recently had the compressor changed on my 3.0, and the drive plate hub was broken just like that. The shaft, which should turn easily, would clunk and jam against something internally. On the other hand, I see that your inner bearing race is stuck on the snout of the compressor. Did the bearing shatter and cause the pulley to twist and break the drive plate? If so, then perhaps you just need a new pulley/bearing/drive plate assembly, and to get the broken hub off. An impact wrench with a rigged-up socket that grabs the remainder of that hub should work, then tap or pull that bearing race off. Too bad you are so far, I bought a brand new pulley assembly and the Sankyo installation tool before finding out what the issue really was, and they need a home.

Wouldn't have worked anyway the 4.2 don't work with pulley, they are directly driven by a shaft of the timing/accessory gears

I have been soaking the part for two days and the f*^ker still won't break loose. I'll give it some heat today, as I have my new compressor waiting to be installed.

Yeah, i had to place mine in a vise and heated it up for a while. Put a breaker on it and it came off.

I am considering removing the AC system if I decide to go water meth option when I boost the car. Does removing the compressor throw anything off on the engine or will everything be the same? Kinda a dumb question to ask but I don’t know anyone that has completely removed system.

Something things just dont go to plan

Got the shaft off of the clutch wheel in the end, ready for the compressor install tonight.

While assembling my engine I used loctite on the engine mount bracket bolts, what a great idea I thought. Until I needed to remove the bracket to install the compressor, where the top right bolt head strips.

I tried for several hours, but could not get the compressor in place with the bracket installed.

So now I have decided to cut the bolt head off with my dremel and of course ran out of carbide disks . The Joy's of motoring would tell me.

The good news of course, is that I have a plan of action and a direction to take.

    Sometimes that's all you need.
