Question Transverse engine block identical to Longitudinal?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi,

So I have a Audi S3 BHZ engine in the garage. It was built April 2007.
My own car has the Audi A4 BUL engine. Built late 2006.
    Both are Quattro.

Thus far I have compared the cylinder heads (waiting for a new BUL gasket to overlay on the BHZ gasket to compare cooling and oil holes etc.) and they appear identical.

But what about the block? Should I assume all accessories and parts will transfer, including flywheel/clutch and engine mounts? Any evidence to support this? Or how can I verify it, without pulling my engine?

Basically if the two engines are compatible I will just restore/build the S3 engine and then swap.

    Thanks

    You know this person?

I browsed through it (NICE car!) and looks like at some point he put a CDL engine in. Not sure I understand what was different on the crank from his notes.
Wasn't the DTM Front Wheel Drive also?

The blocks are identical and all accessories swap over. My race car has an engine out of a GTI which is FWD, and it installed into my Quattro. I know first hand because I did the swap myself.

The crank issue is completely separate. There are difference between tiptronic and manual cranks. That will cause issues.

What you are saying is I need to find out if my S3 engine was in a tiptronic equipped car? How would I do that.
Haven't found the VIN on that block yet...

That's all? I did not see one (didn't look much).
    Clutch looked like this: https://imgur.com/4mXUtp4
Will go back to garage and take a pic of the crank boss and flywheel if that helps.

    All Over!

I don’t think the manual / auto crank difference applies to transverse engines. I believe they’re the same.

When you swap this motor use the block and head but use all of your original accessories just to make sure you don’t have hardware/software conflicts with sensors or other electrical parts unless you verify that they are the same beforehand.

The rail pressure sensor and intake flap runner motor are VIN specific for example. If they have different part numbers from the old motor to the new motor, there could be conflicts. Keep that in mind when you decide which parts to use from each motor. Also keep in mind what part numbers your specific tune might be looking for. If you map out all of this info ahead of time, you’ll have less of a chance of bolting this all up and running into a very avoidable issue.

I’d also make sure if the pilot bearing is different or the same.

Throwing almost everything away from the spare engine. Keeping only bare head and (complete) block.
The needed parts will be either transferred or bought new.
    Thanks

Bare blocks are identical between transverse and longitudinal. The only oddball crank is the tiptronic version in the A4. All other cranks are the same.

So then I'm good with the S3 block. Thanks.
