    Q5 brake kit reviews

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I’ve been looking at brake kits. I’ve been considering the Q5 brake kit. I am wondering how people like it and what wheels your running to clear them. I track the car and not to confident in the stock brakes mostly out of fear that I’ll sling a pad. The Q5 setup doesn’t seem like it has a lot more braking power but is cheaper and more reliable to run.

While I can't speak to how well the brakes work on a B5, I can speak to how well the brakes work on a Q5. And I can assure you they are strong. So strong that I can kick on ABS in the Q5 even in hot, dry weather. As well, consider that a Q5 weighs an easy 2-300lbs more than an S4 and that should give you an idea . OEM 4piston Brembos, and IMO the perfect OEM upgrade for the B5. Been looking at doing this very brake kit on my B5 Once my pads/rotors on the HP2s wear out.

Well, I have porsche macan(same calipers, just cheaper through porsche) on my b7 a4. $480/shipped for the set, and come in flat black powder coat. I run a 18x8.5 at 35 wheel, and need small spacers to clear(3-5mm). Happy with the setup. I don't track my car, so can't give any input there.0607191652.jpeg

What year Macan has the same 4 piston brembo, 320mm rotor setup as the Q5?

Well that looks amazing. So I’ll just start with the 5mm spacers then. But I’ll be doing this one.

    The 3.0t q5 comes with 345s. Not 320s

I understand that. The OP didnt differentiate which size rotor, but by his description I assumed he was referring to the stock rotor and Q5 caliper that bolts right on.

Need for spacers will depend on shape of wheel spokes. Install brakes first , then you will know if you need spacers.

That's the important distinction. Pre-facelift Q5 didn't have the 3.0t and had 2 piston floating fronts. The Facelifted Q5 ('13+) with the 3.0t comes with the 4 piston brembos, which appear to be a PN match to the Macan. Everything should bolt right up without anything special needed, but you may need to play some games with getting wheels to fit.

That said, the HP2 caliper is still one of the most obstructive calipers I've dealt with when it comes to wheels. From what I can tell comparing my B5 to my Q5, the Brebos off the Q5 don't stick out further than the HP2s, but it all depends on the design of your wheels.

    Q5 brake kit reviews

Well if they are any wider than the stock caliper then I’ll need spacers for sure. I was already worried that these wouldn’t fit. But these stock calipers are really wide. So maybe are you running spacers with those hp2’s?

And a picture of the car just for fun

Sorry, forgot to say. Mine are the 345mm setup, not 320. So I had to buy s4 rotors. Mone are from I believe15-16 macan. If you are inyerested in the 345 setup, I can just get ya the part #'s. I have the boxes in my basement, but not home ATM.

    Q5 brake kit reviews

I found a template on ecs for the kit they sell. They should work with out spacers. It will be tight for sure though. My bad I should have checked first but I didn’t scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. I also found all the numbers I can actually get the caliper at napa for 480. I didn’t want to run the ecs brake lines though. What did you use? Are they custom length or will the Q5 lines work?

I got a set of StopTech on eBay for like $40. I needed mk3 front lines for my b7. Not sure what you'll need. I had all Goodridge lines, but they don't sell seperate set of what I needed. If the end fitting to the car side, is same as b7, then mk3 lines would work. But don't know how the b5 is setup.

Okay so I got them installed. Thanks for the tip on the mk3 lines and the Porsche dealer. The lines fit perfect and the fact that they say Porsche is pretty cool. I like the flat powder coating. I figured I would put a couple things out there for people building there own kits. The stock 38mm bolts work, I bought the 45mm they would have hit. Also these seems to have a smaller profile then the stock S4 brakes these fit way better. I’ll post a clearance picture tomorrow.

Great to hear that what I had suspected about caliper clearance holds true. Those look fantastic and I imagine you'll be very happy with them. Looking forward to getting a set for my S4.

Yeah they look awesome. And they stop great but my pedal dropped a bit because of them. I thought it was air trapped but bleed them with the pressure bleeder really well and I have good pedal it’s just lower about an 8th of a pedal. I guess displacing the extra fluid will do that. Also here is the clearance shot

So tons of room compared to stock.

Yeah, I have similar issue with pedal. Just not what it used ta be. If I pump it once, it gets much firmer. I've bked prob 2 gallons of fluid through it, lol.

Okay so this seems to be common knowledge in the b8 s4 forums but I didn’t find anything for the b5. I got my pedal back by cycling the abs pump. It took about 5 try’s but I got the pedal back to 100%. The annoying part was I messed with the output settings in the vag com but my abs and esp light came on. So don’t if you don’t have to. So basically I ran the pump with out the pressure bleeder hooked up. It probably a two man job. I cracked one bleeder and let the pump run. It ran a lot of fluid so keep and eye on the reservoir. Once it runs you fill it up again then run and fill then run. Then take it for a ride testing in the drive way to make sure you have a good pedal. I had to roll out of the garage before I got good pressure. To make the esp light go away press the pedal hard-ish then for the abs light take 90 degree turns at normal speed and it will sort it self out. The abs code said go in a circle in a lot and 15 to 20 kmh but mine reset before I got to the lot. But the drop is gone so I’ll take it.

I am running the Q5 calipers as part of the ECS stage 3 big brake kit (345mm cross drilled and slotted 2pcs disks ). I was going to go with the Porsche 6 piston caliper kit initially but my wheels wouldn´t have cleared them (just barely). I have to say I am quite happy with it. It performs very well. I have the 18 inch Hartmanns HTT-256 rotor wheels.
Of course, I had to paint the calipers :)

345mm Macan/Q5 3.0T are great brakes, love them on my 2001 Allroad, way better than HP2
I have 18" wheels, doubt they would fit under 17".
It is also possible to install smaller calipers from Q5 2.0T, but not sure if that would be any upgrade from stock.

I'll have to cycle mine a few more times. Did it once or twice, and got little better. Thanx for the tip. If I can get my pedal squared away, they would be awesome.

this is where i got my parts there are other options for the rotors and lines but im not trying to put alot of work into this. pretty sure there all right the calipers are were the savings is at. also pretty sure the stick bolts worked.

No, lol. Just drilled rotors and Brembo pads. Wish I could afford ceramic setup, I wouldn't have $800 wheels if I had that kinda free cash..think that was right after I bed them in, so just had the grayish color from pad transfer.

For what it may be worth, I have Brembo 4 pots and 345mm rotors on my 3.0T Q5. The OEM vented rotors and ceramic pads can be purchased directly from authorized Brembo vendors at very reasonable prices. When I needed replacements I got them from BrembostoreUSA. I obviously already had calipers, so I don't know the best source/price.

Lol, na. He's talking about actual ceramic rotors. Not ceramic pads like your thinking.Screenshot_20210227-174308.jpg

Two different conversations. Ceramic rotors are a luxury. Brembo OEM rotors and Brembo ceramics pads are a reasonable and efficient fix.

Thanks for the info. I had sent you an email regarding the parts you used as I'm looking to put this kit together.

    Bumping.

Anyone know what rotors are needed for the B5 S4 if we want to use these Brembo Q5 3.0T 345 calipers?

What lines will work? Banjo or?

I was about to pull the trigger on some 18z/17z but they won’t clear with my wheels by a couple mm. At least going by the ECS template I cut out and “test fit” lol. Bummed but I think these Q5 calipers should have more wheel spoke clearance. Also providing a nice BBK aesthetic and performance upgrade over the stock HP2’s.

Someone chime in if you went this route over 17z18z.

Would the matching Brembo rotors for the Q5 calipers fit? When my OEM 3.0T Q5 front rotors needed replacement, I went with real Brembos. Yeah, they are not slotted or drilled for "bling" but, they are very well vented and well, they just work. Well.

Exact dimensions are at the bottom of the link.

Hmm that I'm not sure of. That's why I asked my above questions. Hoping someone that has done this setup on the B5 S4 can chime in as to which 345mm rotors fit the B5 with the Q5/Macan Brembos. If the Q5 rotors fit the B5 then I'd love to snag a set of the rotors you linked, drilled or slotted doesn't matter to me, I'd be fine with a plain rotor face, just want one that will fit! Appreciate your quick response MSq5, hopefully others will have more info as I really want to run this over the 17z/18z setup for more wheel clearance.

I would like to know that too. Sounds interesting, but which rotor? Because for the z18, I have to drill the center bore a bit.

I am looking at the same setup.
    B6/B7 S4 calipers should work (345mm)

Here is ECS tuning kit with 2-piece rotors. I plan on using 1-piece rotors cause I'm poor.

You use B6/7 S4 345mm rotors, the B8 rotors have a different hat offset and won't work.

I did this swap on my B6 2.7t swapped car so basically the same as B5 and I used 94 jetta 2.0 front brake hoses and Q5 pad wear sensors on both sides. I did 320mm Q5 calipers so you use a stock B5S4/B7A4 rotor.

I've driven one 17/18z swapped car and I'm just fine with the Q5 brembos and come brake job time theres no flap wheeling out hub holes or buying modded rotors, I can just hit rockauto for some bone stock parts and have my car up and running with less downtime.
