    Remove engine without transmission

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi everyone, I am wondering if anyone has removed the engine without the transmission. I realize this may not necessarily be easier but it may work better for me if this is possible since my garage is not very long and then I also would not have to deal with separating and reconnecting the two while they are out. I have never pulled this particular motor before but is there a reason why I cannot just disconnect the flex plate from the torque converter and then just pull just the engine from the front?
    Thanks

People are puling transmission without the engine so I don't see why you wouldn't be able to pull engine without trans.

Can be done but most people don't because it is typically easier to remove both at the same time. Totally understand the lack of space issue in a small garage. Why don't you back the car into the garage so that you can pull it out of the car/garage into the driveway and then if there is enough room work on the engine to the side of the car inside the garage? It is probably hot in AZ but that way you can suffer in the heat for a few minutes only while pulling the engine finally out, move it into the side between the car and wall, and after the garage cools back down work on the engine?

I would recommend pulling engine and trans together way easier to separate and reconnect.
    Pull them both together
    remove DP's
    Remove passenger engine mount bracket
    remove starter
    remove 3 TC bolts
Separate engine from transmission while engine is still on the hoist. Put the transmission on a 4 wheel movers dolly. Slide that back into the engine bay or under the car where the trans originally was. it is out of the way!

Lining up the trans / tc is hard enough outside of the car, way harder in the car. Just did this with my 4.2 allroad. Finally got the engine back in.

    Good luck!

Is it at all possible to remove the starter cable from the starter, rather than the entire starter itself?

Starter needs to be removed to access the TC bolts to the flex plate.

Like Jimmy said, can be done, but it’s not worth it. Getting the motor back in and lined up at that point is going to be so much harder. I mean, if you really wanted to, you could drop the transmission out of the bottom before pulling the engine and then do the reverse to get it re-installed. But that’s adding time to your job for sure.

I'll have to just play this by ear when I start. It just seems like it would be easier not to have to mess with the driveshaft, cv axles, and shift linkage if I just pulled to motor only. There must be something I am missing otherwise everyone would do this. kind of similar to this photo: https://www.mklmotors.com/wp-content...115_114820.jpg

Either fight with the bell housing bolts and down pipe/manifold bolts to remove just the motor, OR axles, drive shaft and shift links. The latter is way easier IMO, especially on reassembly.

    Remove engine without transmission

I have some wisdom for you, get very used to taking a lot of things apart on these cars. I love my b6 but sometimes I do miss having the extra space that most other cars have. I agree with everyone on here pull the engine and transmission as assembly. It makes it so much easier to get back together. I can get my motor/transmission in and out of my car in a weekend. The first time was an adventure.

Good luck and be patient, these cars are difficult at times. So buy a lot of tools that have wobbles and different lengths, you’ll need them. If you can work on an Audi S4 (successfully) you will never be afraid of anything.

Thanks for the wisdom, I maintained an RS4 for 5 years so I'm not really afraid of this project. Only mentioned this idea since I don't really need to do any repairs to the transmission itself.

This is all stemming from the fact that we just bought a 2006 A6 with the 4.2 for next to nothing, only has 100k miles and was told it needed the tensioners replaced. Car has been sitting for about a year. The guy I got it from said "it starts but it has a misfire." I tried to crank it today and it just cranks and cranks, doesn't seem to fire at all. Sounds like it is lacking some compression too. Hopefully there is not any engine damage. I suppose there could also be an unrelated issue keeping it from starting too. I never really heard these engines getting so bad they won't even start, but again I have been in the RS4 world so I didn't really have to pay too much attention. It is throwing a code for the crank sensor so hopefully that could be part of the problem with at least trying to start it.

Here is the codes I got from it:
    7 Faults Found:

    16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
    P0300 - 001 - - Intermittent
    16690 - Cylinder 6
    P0306 - 001 - Misfire Detected - Intermittent
    17755 - Camshaft Position Sensor 2 (G163) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
    P1347 - 002 - Incor. Correl. - Intermittent
    16689 - Cylinder 5
    P0305 - 001 - Misfire Detected - Intermittent
    18010 - Power Supply Terminal 30
    P1602 - 002 - Voltage too Low - Intermittent
    16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
    P0322 - 004 - No Signal

A bad G28 will make it crank only for sure. If you clear it and it comes back, it is definitely the crank position/engine speed/rpm sensor.
