    Spark plug recommendations

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I’m soon to be running a Uni stage 2 tune on E85, with all recommended mods; I don’t plan on tracking the car, just some back road runs on this DD. What are the recommendations, based on experience, for spark plugs, and replacement intervals.

    Thanks.

From what I've read, for your use there are lots of people still running stock plugs.

Per our release HERE, we strongly recommend using the NGK R7437-9 plugs gapped to 0.024” +/-0.002” (0.6mm +/0 0.05mm) with Stage 1+ E85 and Stage 2 ECU calibrations, with a replacement interval of 10,000-15,000 miles (16,000-24,000 km). We have these available HERE or through any of our Authorized Dealers.

I bought the same plugs that John recommended above. I've been using them on my APR 1+ E85 tune and they're holding up great. They're quite pricey, but I managed to find a seller on Ebay that sells them for $26 a piece. I ordered them from this guy when I decided to buy mine. He shipped them out the following day. They typically sell for $32+ a piece.

    His link is HERE

My car runs best with stock plugs. Ran the NGKs awhile and power wasn't as smooth it seemed. I'm apr stage 1+ on e85

I am running stock plugs but I will take John@Unitronic advise and run some aftermarket spark plugs whenever I need to replace them or if the car is misfiring or acting up.

The reason for a hotter plug is to prevent fouling due to deposits not burning off. The trade-off is the hot-spot potentially causing pre-ignition of the air/fuel mixture.

Alcohol fuels have a superior resistance to detonation, but they are actually much lower on the preignition index - so the recommendation is to run 2 colder or equivalent usage to compensate.

If your thrashing the engine, doing 1/2 mile or VMAX etc, I'd be very concerned about keeping the stock plug on Ethanol. Whilst Gasoline has a bit of a 'buffer' with preignition and detonation, given room to detect misfires and correct, it happens very quickly and less forgiving with alcohol fuels so taking the approach of waiting to feel it first is a bit risky.

Are those NGK plugs appropriate for 93 octane as well? I have the UNI 1+ tune (93 octane); car has 21000K on it so about time to refresh the plugs.

Yes, running fine for me on 93 tune at the moment, I couldn't personally be 100% till checking them in a few k miles but others running have no issues and Uni confirmed it too.

I know swapping plugs should be a simple task but is there a how-to out there. The last couple things touched had some wierd Audi connectors that didn't want to separate until you snuggled them, told them they were pretty and spit on the end. I assume the coil packs are similar.

Why? I thought the point of the plug swap was for e85 where pre-ignition can be a problem and using colder plugs helps with that.

    * Edit: Those plugs are better than stock, even if running on a pure stock RS3.*

Cuz they were bought for R, and used them, plus one more, for this car. Misfires dropped in frequency after, gapped 0.024"-0.025". I ran 0.026"-0.028" and had weird fueling issues that stopped after regap...

I run the NGK's gapped at .024, never had an issue on E85 or 93. Will change at 10K miles on the nose as well.
