Talking Integrated engineering ecu and tcu in depth review

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I did a lot of research before deciding on the tuner for my new S3. I had APR stage 2 on my 2017 a3 quattro. I decided on I.E. for a couple reasons.

    1. Seemed to be highest hp and one of the highest torque
    2. Power link is cheap and allows for easy at home tuning and the ability to flash back to stock.
    3. Website looked professional and their hardware looks to be very high quality.
    4. I loved APR on my A3, but wanted to try something new. It was great, but expensive and there were a few things I didn't love.

I received my power link in the mail Friday. I started with stage 1 low torque. Install was easier than expected and only took about 20 minutes. It definitely added some extra power, but I wasn't blown away by it. I was actually a little underwhelmed but knew this was the most mild tune and for what it is, it ran well. If you're just looking for a little boost but don't intend to change any hardware, want to be easy on your engine/turbo but still have some fun, it is a great tune. Most people would be more than satisfied with it. I, however, was not. As tuning enthusiasts we always want more power!

I had to flash it back to stock yesterday for a quick stop to the Audi dealership for a warranty issue. That was very easy. took all of 5-10 minutes.

When I got the car back today I raced home to install the stage 1 high torque and the required tcu tune. Ecu took about 20 minutes. I chose 3600rpm launch control to start the tcu tune. This took maybe 5 minutes. It was surprisingly fast.

I drove it in city, country roads, and highway right after install with my wife and 9mo old son. I couldn't wail on it too hard with them in the car, but hole-E-Sh*t! the car is so much quicker!

Drive mode: I did not enjoy drive mode stock, or with my stage 2 apr tune. They both were much weaker and gear hunted compared to sport or manual. That is no longer the case! Drive mode is perfect! It shows you which gear its in as you fly through them! It always finds the right gear depending on your driving style at the time. WOT is a thrill in drive. Stuck in traffic, it's easy to drive. The tcu tune is most evident here and in sport mode. The shifts are so smooth and lightning fast. I surprised myself a couple times this evening when I took it for a spin alone. Got to 60 faster than I ever have and it feels effortless because of the tcu. I would be fine if I didn't have two other driving modes, but I do.

Sport: sport mode is identical to drive in the sense that it's smooth power. I don't think it's any fast than drive. When it was stock, sport was the only auto mode I found tolerable. Now it just runs 1 gear lower than drive. I can definitely notice a couple conditions where this would be a desirable mode though. Anything above first and you're already in the ideal gear for more pep, outside of full throttle. The other benefit is auto with launch control, like stock.

Manual: I almost exclusively drive in manual mode using the paddles. It now holds the gear further into redline, and in general is just fast and shifts smoother. It's a lot of fun.

Launch control: OMG I now own a rocket! I thought launch control was good stock, but it's in a whole new ball game now. I chose 3600rpm to start, as recommended by I.E. staff. They said start low and work your way up. You have the choice in 200rom intervals from 3000-4200. I figured this was a conservative choice and I didn't know what would be good with my set up. I was blown away. I was to 60 in what felt like 3 seconds(i'm sure it was longer, don't critique). The acceleration felt violent. I was firmly plastered in my seat. I loved it! I think it was around 35mph before I felt the first gear shift. My first launch as in sport mode. I believe I stopped accelerating around 75/80 and was in 3rd gear. It gripped so hard. I had no wheel spin at all. This is only stage 1! I can only imagine what stage 2 will feel like.

I will continue adding updates to this thread as I continue my build. I'm also going to play with different launch settings. My next step is a downpipe, intercooler and stage 2 high torque w/ crackle. If you own an I.E. tune or any of their hardware on our platform please share any and all info. I found almost no first person accounts of their products. I took a leap of faith and am overjoyed by the results. I hope this is helpful to anyone who was in my position. I'm still debating on who to use for my dp and intercooler so if you have theirs let me know. I'm sure they're as good as their tunes though.

P.s. Currently, the only aftermarket hardware is my APR cold air intake. Everything else is stock.

So IE is new to our platform in tunes rite? I hear ppl using UNI and APR and not much reviewing IE on S3. What kind of warranty was done at dealer when you flash back to stock? Did they detect that you have a tune and flash back to stock? I want to know how their tune hold up for reliability.

It was my pre-sense. the sensor was just off but I thought it was going to need replacing. As far as I know they did not see that. They didn't say anything about it. I've brought 2 tuned cars to them and they never said anything. The last car I had was apr so I left the tune on when I brought it in and they said nothing. I looked into it and it would be fairly difficult for them to tell that it's been tuned as long as you don't leave hardware in there. Once the downpipe and intercooler are in I don't think they'll be so easily fooled. It could be that the mechanics just know me and don't care that its tuned.

I'm assuming they're newer than the others but am not sure. As far as long term reliability goes, I feel like that would be up to how the owner takes care of the car more than anything, but I will definitely keep posting here with any new developments.

Nice to see you like the tune :)

Tuning these cars really is night and day over stock. Completely different car

Nice review! I'm currently running a JB4 piggy back tune but want to get a flash tune in the future, don't know what to choose between Unitronic, APR, I.E.
Just ordered the I.E. downpipe and will get it install next Friday, reasons I went with IE is because the quality looks really good and it has thicker walls so there's less drone and tinny sound.

They should (maybe they are) work on MPI integration.

So I still have launch at 3600 rpms and clocked a 3.6 sec 0-60 with launch on in sport mode. in drive mode without I clocked 3.9sec. Either way I'm pretty stoked to be sub 4. Full disclosure, I timed it by using lap timer on the virtual cockpit. My lag starting and ending timer could be a big factor but I did 6 pulls all coming in about the same.

Mtechquattro please let us know what you think of the dp once installed. Idk if I want to do it right now or get my brakes upgraded before stage 2, but I want stage 2 w/ crackle so bad! lol
Does anyone know if I can run the i.e. intercooler without a tune? Thinking its safest to do that before stage 2.
@ theweebabyseamus, I love your passion for Archer. One of the best shows ever.

I just installed the Unitronic intercooler, CTS turbo inlet, ECS silicon intake hose, and K&N filter without ANY tune, then did 3 sessions of Road Atlanta while data logging. Air Intake Temps dropped by at least 35F and had no heat soak like I did earlier in the year (and have data logs to compare). So nothing but improvements.

I too can't wait to get a tune, but still trying to figure out the brakes that I finally cooked after switching to EBS Yellowstuff pads.

Awesome thanks r.cade! I'm considering all of those parts. What do you think of the cts turbo inlet and yellow stuff pads? Those I want to do right away. The ecs is so much cheaper than other brands! I feel like it's such a simple component that it doesn't matter if I spend more. And since I'm doing the rotors, pads are a must. Mine leave so much dust! Performance trumps dust though.

I put the pads on the morning of the track day and did not get them bedded properly before I abused them, so I can't really say anything about performance yet. I can say there is LESS dust than stock pads would have left in the past week. I was expecting the same or worse, but stock pads are really bad with the dust.

The CTS inlet is fine, I don't see that there is any differences between vendors with that part except price. I did the intercooler upgrade to help with heat soak, which it did. I did the intake parts mostly to counteract any lag caused by the bigger intercooler, which they did.

I ended up ordering the IE stage1 93 ECU / TCU tunes over the weekend, and JUST flashed it.. waiting for traffic to thin out for a drive! I was leaning toward the Uni tune, but after your review and seeing they support race gas and crackles.. it sold me.

I highly assume the crackle tune is only for stage 2 but correct me if I’m wrong?

Hoping I’m wrong as my IE cable/tune is coming next week lol

correct, IE stage 1 does not have pops and bangs.

i went IE stage 1 ECU and TCU tune first, and then added the K&N drop in filter, ecs silicone hose and turbo inlet, which feels much better

That's awesome! I'm glad to hear it. You'll love it. I wasn't planning on doing this so soon, but I just bought the I.E. dp and intercooler. They're having a sale right now, so it made it hard to pass up. I have to take the car in for a pre-sense warranty issue next week. Once I get the car back, my new parts will be in and I'll flash stage 2 w/ crackle! I can't wait! And what you said about the turbo inlet, that's how I feel too. If one is better than another, I don't think it would be enough to notice. I'll order one up. Thanks for the info!

And yes stage 2 has the option for crackle. Not stage 1.

I think I may go with IE as well. Thanks for the detailed review. I was looking at APR tunes for several months but after speaking with a couple local Audi Motorsports shops, it’s between GIAC and IE. Word is they’re they best if I want more power but with no headaches. Long term reliability is my priority.

I think most of the tuners who provide a tune for my MQB GTI also offer one for the A3. I've got a list of 18 tuners and have never seen a decent comparison of even two of them. I haven't read anything bad about IE, but I doubt any shop has put in the effort to determine which tune is best.

I'm also running on IE Stage 2 93 high torque with crackle mode or pops and bangs whatever you want to call it and DSG Tune over a year now. And I really like it. No issues.

My only complaint is that IE don't offer and don't want to offer a Stage 3. Leaving me with no option than annoyingly switch tunes to go Stage 3. To that end I'll go with Revo.

I really wish IE will grow up and offer a Stage 3.

In v1.4 of the stage 1 map IE added the gear number to the virtual cockpit display (for non-manual mode) was super happy to see that!
