Thoughts? Injector replacement necessary during Carbon Clean

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
2011 S5 with barely 50k. Car has no obvious buildup problems or warning signs on dash. I'm ideally doing this for peace of mind and mainly re-gain any lost power.

$1070 all in - including replacing intake seals. Was told that the injectors operate under extreme pressure/compression and buildup isnt bad enough to replace, they could clean them instead..

Another recommended replacing the injectors, it'd cost me about $2200 including $400 or so for injector reseal kit...this is all new to me but isnt that a bit redundant or wouldnt that be included or waived during this process? Is a reseal kit like that mandatory when replacing injectors?

Might be selling the car in 10months so I'm debating doing this but I've been eyeballing about $1100 or so for this service for the last couple months anyway so this $2200+ quote is throwing me off with the peace of mind I'd have new injectors

    What would you do?

Just had this done on my RS5 through an independent shop (@50,000KMS) for performance and preventative maintenance. Decided to do carbon clean only, however, JHM and reading online recommended doing injectors @ same time.

Cylinder 6 & 8 started leaking 3 days after carbon clean (a few clips broke when removing intake manifold), ended up replacing all 8, and had 0 issues prior. Tough to say if it was from an error on removing the upper intake manifold or if they were beginning to fail but as I said I had no prior problems so it depends on who does the install.

I believe there have been quite a few other members who have done just the carbon cleaning with no issues.

If you're selling the car don't bother with the injector. If you're keeping it, I'd do it as your mileage is close to when its recommended.

Either way, enjoy the 15-25 hp you gain from the clean! It makes a noticeable difference!

Yeh I've had 2 carbon cleans done ( B7 RS4 & B8.5 RS5 ) and didn't need to replace any injectors. Having said that my mechanic is pretty careful which is why I go there

I had mine done at my dealer. Injectors were cleaned and look as good as new. Car ran as good as the day I picked it up.

Use a reputable shop with a lot of experience. I chose to pay extra and not risk unnecessary damage

what were the mileages at for each vehicle?

My other concern as stated, I might be parting ways with my car between Feb-April of next year so I'm curious if the injector cost is even worth it...I have barely 49k on the car (2012)..

    50k miles for RS4 and 35k for RS5.
Big improvement on the butt dyno for the RS4 and noticeable but relatively minor for the RS5. But I think the RS5's are a little less prone anyway plus obviously less miles on it.

If it were me I wouldn't do the injectors but you just need to accept that for that likely $ saving you are taking a small risk that it may cost you more because they have to go back in to resolve an injector issue, depends on your view

Major difference in my RS5. I had mine done at 55K miles. the big diff was the responsiveness

I looked into this and the BG44K Platinum is what I would use right?

Does not list Audi as a compatible vehicle but I do not think that matters, might give it a try and see what we get....

Forgive my ignorance on the matter but is injector replacement/cleaning really recommended? I thought the injectors were good to beyond 150,000 km and sprayed fuel at nearly 2000 PSI at the max?

can anyone confirm or elaborate on this? because the one independent shop that i spoke with about doing this said the same thing about them operating under such high pressure that unless one of the injectors actually 'failed' then a replacement would be necessary, otherwise, clean them up a little if needed and just follow through with the carbon-clean and you're good to go.

a member in another thread that @namvar posted said he heard stories about not replacing injectors during a carbon clean and it caused further issue? what could a bad injector really cause down the road assuming you dont take care of it immediately?

I replaced all 8 165k doing carbon clean now with a bunch of other items. I already had one fail already and I plan on keeping the car so I replaced all of them. I’ve had the car for about 4 years with 22k now have 165k and still runs great. Can’t wait to get my car back it should run like new!!

Well, used the BG44K in my fill-up a few days ago, car feels strong, idle is much better on cold starts and smoother. Pretty pleased.

I assume you just dump this into the tank whenever you want or is it best when filling up on nearly an empty tank at the station?

Where do the deposits go once broken down? Do they become gasses and exit through the pipe? Im just nervous putting something that will go through my entire fuel system, breaking up pieces of buildup...regardless if its non-corrosive

I don't think it's any different than running techron or any other type of fuel system cleaner. The deposits, if any, are getting burned up and pushed out the exhaust.

The car definitely idles stronger, acceleration feels good and I lost the little bit of stumbling I'd get on cold starts.

I’m at 60k. I carbon cleaned about a month ago and also replaced all the injectors. As many folks have said, at the cost of dismantling the engine, you might as well just do it. Rather than have to pay the labor twice. Unless you’re DIY.
There was an epic improvement in the car, but I was still getting EPC warning. Went back to PG and we updated the tcu thinking that would cure it. No dice. Turns out I had a defective camshaft solenoid. By no means minor, and yet another not insignificant cost. But I can tell you this, the car is amazing. The acceleration is really quite something to behold. I might need new seats shortly. KWv3’s helped a little bit too ;)

Seriously. Pay it. The derived giggles will be priceless. Good luck
