    2010 Audi A4 B8 Timing Chain Replacement

    Hi,

    I recently had the code P0016 flash on for a day and then it disappeared. So far no sounds or changes in performance, car is running like normal. My 2010 B8 A4 has 156,000km or 96,000 miles on it. The repair shop recommended a a timing chain replacement as a precautionary repair as they are saying that it will eventually snap and cause even more damage (although no faults are being observed now and they couldn't replicate the error code again). I'm hesitant because of the cost ~2k but I don't want to cause further damage.

    What should I do here? Does this make sense to do even with nothing wrong?

    Yes it actually does make sense, I'm not typically the type of guy that recommends throwing parts at cars, on this one i bend my own rules a little. As you have a 2010 you likely have an old style tensioner that could grenade at any time.

    If your shop was able to validate you have the old tensioner, then i highly recommend having the tensioner and chain replaced. The original tensioner is weak and extremely intolerant to chain stretch ( and that is essentially its job ).

    If you have the new tensioner then i would have the cam phase adaption checked. If you are exceeding 5 degrees cam phase adaption on a new tensioner I would think its reaching that time, if you have exceeded 5 degrees on an old tensioner i would consider you a lucky person.

    Better to err on the side of caution with this code if you dont know where your engine is at.

    Shop around as i have seen it quoted far less than what you have been quoted , but just make sure you compare apples with apples.
    you need two chains, various ramps , a tensioner or 2, a new lower cover and some sealant ...

    You've seen far less that 2000 CAD in Ontario? I got three quotes today ($2200 (independent shop), $2260 (audi dealer), $2400 (independent shop).

    Have you considered doing it yourself ?

    There is Munich auto here in cambridge. I bet they are cheaper. All they work on are German cars too

    Go on ecs and buy an oem timing chain kit should save you a good amount.

    ead09 don’t make the same mistake I did and think you have time to replace tensioner and chain, my 09 had more miles (130K) but with no warning I started the car and timing jumped because chain was stretched and tensioner couldn’t keep it tight any longer.
    Not only did I need the timing components replaced, my head had to be rebuilt with all new valves which was a 2 week plus repair at an Indy Shop that lightened my wallet of $3,900 USD
    It’s only a matter of time so do the timing chain and tensioner sooner than later
