Help with 2018 Q5 Brake pads & Rotors

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My 2018 Q5 Prestige has 22000 miles. During inspection at dealer, I was told I need all 4 pads & rotors replaced for $2400.00 + tax. This is my 4th Audi and I never had to get my brakes replaced this early.

I have a friend who used to be an Audi tech and willing to help if I bring the parts.

Anyone here have any recommendations what pads & rotors to purchase?
    thanks.

If the OE ones worked well for you, find the best price online and use those. Otherwise I've always liked stoptech, probably cheaper and few different pad compounds to choose from. Rotors you can find several options for the Q5, again, buying the non Audi stamped box from the OE manufacturer is a good choice, can try another brand but something seems off for needing all 4 that early unless you do a lot of towing, mountain roads, or are particularly hard on brakes. Do you left foot brake and it's maybe riding them all the time?

22k seems way early to me. Given I have an SQ5, so different brakes, but I drive it like I stole it every day and I still have about 50% left on the fronts at 40k miles, the rears are about done with only about 20% left, I'll check the rotors but guessing I'm going to end up changing just the pads.

Also 2400 is insane to me. Pads you could buy all 4 brakes for less than 200, and for rotors for 400 or 500. Order the parts yourself and do it or find a good independent shop and the labor will probably be half of what the dealer wants. Can get a second opinion then too.

I highly doubt you need rotors, it's the dealer.

I agree, my 2009 only needed new rotors after 65K miles and they still had 2mm left.

Keep in mind, dealers love ta do this. Prob don't need them. Have someone else look at them, theyre prob fine. If not, look at aftermarket. You can prob get complete setup from stoptech or brembo or similar, for half that price, installed. Find a good independent garage, that won't rape ya on cost like dealership.

FWIW, 2mm is the amount of allowable wear on the rotors from the factory for these cars so not a lot of margin to start with. Mileage is low though in any case

    2400 is f'n bananas.
Youre probably not going to have much luck on aftermarket pads yet so your best bet is to check Audipartsusa.com to see what they cost there. For rotors, you should be able to get them from the local parts store.

I just did my rears on my sq5. Pads were around 100 from the above site and ventilated rotors for 75 each.
Waiting for time to to my fronts but pads were 160 and rotors around 125 each.

Brakes are really an easy thing to learn to do yourself and save tons of money. And as already mentioned, 22k miles is really early to need all 4 corners. I'd have someone else take another look

    Thanks everyone.
I don't do anything hard with the vehicle. Normal day to day driving.
I will go to a local independent shop and ask for 2nd opinion.

FWIW. Just changed changed my front brake pads on my 2016 Q5 2.0 @ 30,000. OEM pads were not worm out but wanted better braking. Mops recommended HAWK street performance
5.0 pads. GREAT improvement over oem pads.

Chawski - you mention doing your rears on the sq5, then said you're waiting to do the fronts but pads were $160 and rotors were $125 each.

Where are you finding front rotors for the SQ5 for $125 each?

    Rock auto.
I may actually leave the front rotors alone. Still smooth and only the faintest outer lip
