Question New A5 Prestige? Or used 2018 S5 Prestige?

I currently have a 2014 A5 that I purchased with only 8k on the clock... I've put up a lot of daily-driving miles on it over the last ~4 years and I have been looking at some new cars.

I'm currently stuck on pricing though... no way do I want to make huge payments on a brand new S5 (which are about $68k with Prestige package)... but I found a nice 2018 S5 Prestige with low mileage (5,200 or so) and in the exact same color I want (Daytona grey pearl). The dealer is asking $54k but I would want to talk them down a little... it's not Certified so I'd just be taking over the original New warranty.

However, you can get a fully-loaded NEW Prestige A5 for the same price. With the Black Optic package too (to look somewhat similar to the S5, with the Cavo 19" wheels and all that)... and with the same color (DGP) and all the same options, it would also come around $54-56k.

I know everyone is going to say "go with the S5, are you stupid?!" but I wanted your inputs.... pluses, minuses of each...

It's just the better value when the condition is like new. Also the depreciation in the time you own it will be less.

The dealer should be able to CPO it for $2,000 and if so, i think it's a no brainer...

You should really test drive the S5, the power upgrade and exhaust note alone is worth it.

Yep all day long, my SQ5 lost $16,000 first year when I went in for a RS5. I would be upside down 11,000 so I'm keeping the SQ for a couple more years.

S5 all the way...I never buy as cars depreciate immediately after you drive it off the lot!! Get the S, you won’t regret it!!

I had this same debate when I pickup my B8.5 S4.

The dealer had a brand new, fully loaded Prestige A4 with ALL the options / colors I wanted. Pricing was about the same between the S4 PP and the A4 Prestige.

I drove both back-to-back several times and could not get over the added power and ride of the S4. Despite not getting all the options I wanted, the S4, for me, was a much better purchase. I added the stuff I wanted (wheels, BO time, etc) and was very happy with the car.

Now, the new A4/A5 does have more power than the outgoing model, but so does the S5. The A5 has the DSG, which, to me, is a better transmission that a standard auto. However, I cannot speak directly to the DSG in the A5 as I have not driven one.

If it was me, and I was going to PURCHASE (not lease), I would more than likely go with the used S5 (and ask them to CPO). The value proposition is not there to purchase a new car - depreciation is terrible unless you plan on keeping the car until the wheels fall off - then it does not matter as much as the equation balances better over time (but still not as good as purchasing used).

A5 SB owner here. The ONLY reason I didn’t get the S was because I’m a cheapa$$. There’s not a day I step in the car wishing it was an S. The ONLY reprieve I get is convincing myself I’m getting better MPGs lol.

Definitely go with the S5. I have a 2019 A5 loaner right now while the dealer is working on getting a headliner creak fixed. The A5 feels tame compared to my S5. My 2018 S5 Prestige was 65k off the lot when it was new, but I paid 50,5k with 9100 miles on it. Buying a prior year model with low miles is far more cost effective than buying new. For me, knowing I paid a good price only adds to my enjoyment of owning this awesome car.

So those assholes at Audi Pacific in Torrance sold the car from under me... I test drove it Friday, I told them I would come back today after I ran some more numbers and got a check from my credit union (the Audi financing was way too high) and I just called them a few minutes ago... those mother******s sold it an hour ago.

This is the 2nd time I've dealt with this dealership and they screwed me over. When I was looking at another car on their lot ~5 years ago (when I bought my A5) they had an A5 that they would absolutely NOT budge on the price, even though it had some paint scuffs and spots on the interior headliner and other places. So I went with Circle Audi and they gave me a great deal on a similar car.

    Fuck Audi Pacific

That blows. I can appreciate it if they want to prioritize a sure thing, but it would have been common courtesy to at least give you a call...

Exactly, the sales manager was an asshole too.... I asked why they didn't at least give me a courtesy call to say someone else was looking at it, and he said "I have a business to run, I can't call everyone when someone is looking at a car"... what a piece of shit. I had spent 3+ hours on Friday test driving it, talking numbers, discussing my trade-in... I told him explicitly I was coming in Sunday (today) with a blank check from my bank... and they still sold it from under me.

    What a sleazy business.

Audi Pacific.... I'm going to spread their sales "tactics" all over the internet.... Yelp, Google, whatever.
    Bunch of liars.

You're a local. Circle Audi is great, bought my first Audi there. Another dealer I won't work with is Audi Ontario. Stay clear from them. You end up with an S5 from Circle? I picked up my new A5 from Audi West Covina and their service was amazing.
