Proper tire width for 9.5" wheel?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm looking to buy a set of 9.5" wide, 20" wheels for my A7. Stock tire size is 265/35/20, but that is on a 9" rim. Would that also work on the new wheel or would 275's be better? I don't want them stretched, just normal size/width.

If 265's look right and fit, I'd rather use those as I can get them significantly cheaper.

Well only going 1/2" wider, so if ua already jave them, throw them on. Won't be much stretch, will look fine. If ya font like, go next size bigger. But I would just try them first, since you already have them. Just my thoughts.

What's on the car now need to be replaced (badly) so I'll be getting new tires either way. Thanks for the input.

Ah, well you can mount them, just to see. Only cost couple bucks to mount, don't need to balance. Or if your concerned about having a little stretch, bump it up 1 size. 10mm wider will almost make up for 1/2" wider wheel.

    i think 275 is proper.

265 and 275 will both be fine. Anything bigger than 275 on 9.5 is too wide and you are putting constant stress on the sidewall at an angle it is not designed to be in. 275 on 9.5 has the sidewall perfectly even with the wheel face without any stretching. I would say for a 9.5" wheel I would comfortably run tire widths in the range from 245 to 275 so you pick.

No problem. It's also not good to push tires to the minimum or maximum. Just do your research and you'll be set.

I got the 275/35R20 on my 2016 A7 with the 20 inch rims and they run perfect. I have the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and love it. 265 is such a dumb oddball size, dunno why Audi chose it for the A7 and the 275 mm width for the S7...

You put a 275 on a 9 inch wheel? That's a little much. A 9.5 wheel with a 275 tire is max. You might want to do some research versus what looks cool.

Well fuuuuu*****. Now I'm a little upset at Getyourwheels.com for talking me out of it and all the reasons to go with 265's on my aftermarket setup... then again there are a lot of sites that back them up on what they told me. Odd but really happy with my setup either way.

You're just fine with 265s and it looks good, not to mention your speedometer calibration is just about 100%. It's a far bigger sin to go the other way, with a wheel width far larger than the tire used. Unfortunately I see that trend far too often.

Also note there are some small discrepancies in the tire contact patch depending on make. The shoulder block and construction of the Michelin PS 4S is just slightly wider than the Continental ExtremeContact Sport at the same size. The Pirelli P-Zero appears wider at the sidewall than it really is due to its 'rim protector strip' construction.
