    PITTED EXHAUST TIPS

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My 2016 Q5 has PITTED exhaust tips-holes in the chrome finish. First time I took it to dealer it only had 23k mi & 2 yrs old. Right after I bought it. Have had it to Audi dealer several times with promises that Audi rep would have to look at it. Only get excuses & no Audi rep. I understand that the chrome tip is part of the exhaust system so replacement would cost Audi some $$$$-not just new tips. I have made final contact with dealer management, which is pending. Still only 29k mi 1 yr in warranty. As I am not very optimistic after all the inaction I have received I would like to know if there is a way to replace only the tips. If all else fails will contact AoA. Just a real PITA.
Everything else is great with my Q5.

    Mine look like shit also.
Dealer laughed at me when I pointed it out.

They also laughed when I showed them the faded “SQ5” plate in the caliper that had faded nearly to all black.

I know one guy on here had his replaced, but that was a lot of luck

Now you can share your experience to others that wonder why the new b9 q5/sq5 have turn downs with fake exhaust outlets! The main audi model with the most complaints about tips discoloring. Their fix for new model? Get rid if them!

A picture or two would help determine options. In the meantime, 0000 or 000 steel wool with liquid metal polish or all purpose cleaner might make a significant difference.

I replaced my tips with aftermarket 4" tips from Solo in Canada. This was strictly cosmetic as I wanted to fill the openings, but the stainless steel construction was a big bonus. Total spend was < $200.

I ran those exact Solo tips on my A5, and then went their 601 quads. Great tips!

Don't need to post pics. I believe that "pitted thru the chrome" is graphic enough. I have competed in national concours so I know how to clean exhaust tips. Mine have HOLES in the chrome. Cleaning does not repair holes, but thx for the reply.

i had this occur within a couple months of picking up a new, 2014 SQ5 back in November of 2013 - the tips were all pitted and the chrome was chipping off. dealer offered to "clean" but it was obvious that it wasn't going to work. they tried anyways...and failed.

complained to audi and was originally denied a warranty claim. pushed back and they eventually replaced them. over 5 years later, there's not a chip on them (even with northeast winters), so i assume it was just a bad chrome job / batch of tips

i had trouble after 3 months...can't imagine they'll give it to you easily after 3ish years, but worth trying. good luck

Once a dick always a dick. Not sure why I bother, but....no sweat, won't happen again. Kinda' funny... a month or two ago you couldn't figure out how to wash wheels, but now advice from a detailer with > 20 years of experience is beneath you. For someone who's competed in national concours, you sure as hell ask some funny questions. Good luck.

Those look fantastic. Do they stain or pit, too? Just wondering if the problem is systemic, regardless of choice of tips, due to the direct fuel injection and rich AFRs.

Either, way those are visually stunning.

I really liked those tips. They're polished stainless, so no pitting. I did get some discoloration from heat, but that's always the case with stainless. It can be polished out with jeweler's rouge, but most folks (myself included) actually like the look. Otherwise, they cleaned up very easily. Mine was stock, so factor that accordingly with your awesome setup, but nonetheless I don't think maintenance would be an issue.

Thank you, sir. I was looking at stainless 4" Flowmaster tips of very similar design. They offer separately the same ones they use in their Q5 exhaust system. But, they are a bit more pricey. No need to spend more on fhe FM tips, since your tips are holding up quite well.
