C7.5 2016 A6 (and others) CarPlay / Android Auto Activation DIY Guide

Disclaimer / Warning:
I personally paid to get CarPlay activated on my 2016 Audi A6 Prestige Quattro with MMI Navigation Plus as suggested in another thread. I'm writing this after extensive research on the subject.

These instructions are almost identical to the ones provided in the original thread (minus the remote assistance steps). Follow these instructions at your own will. I'm not responsible for bricking your car's MMI.

Is it really DIY?
Yes! It is actually DIY! If you want professional help along the upgrade, follow the instructions on the original thread.

What do you need?
Download the firmware for MMI: https://mega.nz/#!MCpwCYQS!9MS1YWoki...CFTT9geqmZB3-I
That's it!

Procedure
Bottom-left, Top-left buttons listed below are the ones surrounding the rotatory wheel

1. Format your SD card with Fat32
2. Extract all files to SD card from RAR file - (such that you end up with a lot of folders are at root of the card)
3. SD card with files to SD1 slot of car
4. Turn on ignition (not the engine)
5. Press Radio
6. Hold Back + Bottom-Left buttons for 6 seconds - Green menu appears
7. Tick the following option: production -> rcc_prod -> swdl_prod
8. Press Radio
9. Hold Back + Top-Left buttons for 6 seconds - Red menu appears
10. Click update -> SD1 -> User defined
11. Click Update on bottom right
12. Enter into Bose6416A_P. Click All -> NONE -> All (if you don't do this, your Bose audio will not work until you get it fixed by a dealer)
13. Press back and verify that N is written next to Bose6416A_P
14. Scroll down all the way and click Start Update -> Start
15. Wait until the process completes. Will reboot several times.
16. In the next list that appears, scroll to bottom and click Resume -> Cancel version compare
17. Wait until the process completes. Will reboot several times.
18. If MMI is turned off at this time, press Start button to turn it on. Don't start engine.
19. Reboot MMI by holding for a second or two Menu + Rotary Control + Top-right button
20. Enjoy CarPlay or Android Auto

Can't activate Green / Red menu?
Search the web for solutions on how to activate using VCDS or OBDEleven or SD card method. You can be sure that some method will work.

Error Codes?
Yes, there will be error codes in control module 5F. Personally, I have 3 persistent error codes. Don't attempt SVM or other funky stuff; they won't go away. Simply clear all of them and ones that have to stay will stay.

What about D-Link, remote PC access, laptop and other things that I've heard?
Turns out, they are simply not required.

Procedure

15. Wait until the process completes. Will reboot several times.
16. In the next list that appears, scroll to bottom and click Resume -> Cancel version compare
17. Wait until the process completes. Will reboot several times.
18. If care MMI is turned off at this time, press Start button to turn it on. Don't start engine.
19. Reboot MMI by holding for a second or two Menu + Rotary Control + Top-right button
20. Enjoy CarPlay or Android Auto

I don’t think the laptop and the D-link are for nothing, he uses them to enable the green/red menu, neither were enabled by my using OBD11 or VCDS on my C7.5 and I was able to get into them during this process when working with @carplay_audi so I’m pretty sure he must have enabled them using the laptop connection.

Agreed. However, these update instructions are easily available online on other websites as well.

You are probably right. Red / green menu may have been enabled using the remote connection, but they can be enabled using other methods.

He has you take the SD card out of the 5F and back into the laptop then back into the 5F because there are a few files he loads to activate CarPlay after the main update and I notice that file disappears after it activates. These instructions alone will not activate it and will only update you to the new software. I watched it done 3 times cause I did a couple co workers cars also. He uses the D-link just to activate the green menu I believe

Yes, 2016 in the US, some 2015s in Europe.

My mmi needed a firmware update to a newer mmi version before updating and enabling CarPlay. Doubt these instructions are enough. I know the dlink is used to access the shell and reach root.

I can't seem to get into the green screen. I'm on MHI2, software 0387. I can get into red engineering screen, was able to update from 2016 maps to 2018/2019, but no green screen, no matter what I try. How can I get in or force firmware update? I activated 5F with VCDS successfully too, no luck tho.

As mentioned, I did it with VCDS, and the channel 6 value changed to 1. Still can't get in. Strange that the link you sent says that MIB (the system we have?) says hidden menu button sequence "NOT AVAILABLE"

I can get to a point where I click SD1, but then it scans the SD card and throws an error, I never see 'User defined', I just get the above error. Anyone seen this before?

Try this:
Go to RCC-tools-0-default, then take the file “update persistence” and move it to the root folder also. Then try the update again.

Same behavior, I'm afraid. I noticed a 'logging' section in the red menu now though, which listed a number of updates through 2018. The car had Audi Connect when I bought it, I wonder if that's different than the norm.

The logging screen is normal. The update won’t take because it sees it’s not compatible. “He” did something real quick in the beginning that enabled the green screen and also changed the software level to something higher so it would trick it to accepting the update. Can anyone else who paid for the update verify that he installed a program on their desktop?

just a little update on the matter of instrument glitches.
I took my car to Audi dealership, they tried 4 days to to fix my sporadic optical bus error after android/car-play firmware update. Since i had removed the 5f controller faults related to SVM by doing adaptation with OBD tool they could find anything telling that firmware was tempered or upgraded by third mean.
they called me today and said they tried updating software or something but its not working (they had ordered a firmware update from Audi). They brought this problem to Audi, Audi told them that ECU is faulty (they said its their fault, i dont know what this means ) and they will replace my ECU with actual software (Audi will do all this in warranty).

i am interested to know what ECU are they talking about ? and secondly will it reset everything? I asked that guy if i would still have access to all the features, he said yes i would.

I’m assuming the ecu they’re replacing is the actual instrument cluster. If they were to replace the 5F module then you would not have CarPlay anymore.

Hey guys,
I just watched the videos that @Gunmeister did and i doubt the above will work. He creates a Team Viewer VPN and through that he does something on his local machine that feeds information through the DLink.
Would strongly advise not to try the above because i also saw that whatever you download from Mega is not complete, something is missing which he adds once the installation begins.

Just got my carplay to work on my 2016 A6. I paid Carplay_Audi, since I could never get the green screen to activate on my own. small price to pay.

However, my wifes Iphone 7 works great, but the car will not recognize my iPhone X. I reset all settings, allowed Siri, etc. still nothing.

Not sure.. same wire and port work fine on the other iPhone. Probably some stupid setting is off. Will update when i figure it out.

A few of us have found that switching the cable to the other USB port cures a couple of problems. No idea why, but it works....
