Just drove at least 200+ miles without my oil cap screwed on..

So I'm at the tail end of a 200 mile drive and just recently my oil light came on. Figured no big deal I'll just throw in a quart and everything will be good. Right? No. The thing is, I just had to top off the oil last week so I was immediately a little suspicious of the fact that id gone through a quart already. Popped open the engine bay to find my oil cap unscrewed and conveniently laying between my super charger and coolant reservoir. My car was just in the shop this morning for a tire rotation, so my first thought was they unscrewed it for some reason and forgot to put it back on. My gut is telling me I'm just an idiot and forgot to screw it back on last week.

What I'd like to know now is if there's a possibility of any damage done to my engine by driving without an oil cap for the past probably 500 miles since last week. Fortunately there didn't appear to be any oil on the underside of the hood or anywhere else, and I did just fill it up and put the cap on so I definitely wasn't driving it with low oil or anything.

I don’t think they hold in pressure or anything but I’m no mechanic! If it ain’t knocking or making any new noises you’re probablg totally fine. Honestly I have done that same thing lol

Yeah there's no knocking so I figured I'm fine. Just wanted to get another opinion on the fact. I'm glad to know I'm not the only dummy on this forum lol.

If your oil pressure alarm wasn't triggered it's safe to assume there's enough oil in it, but it's also worth measuring how much it takes before getting to operating level. So you know what you lost.

The caps are actually designed to do the opposite and release pressure that's leaked through from the combustion chamber. They cannot blow off the valve cover gasket, just look at the construction. Also, you likely still have the emissions system of a positive crankcase ventilation still installed to handle these gases by recapturing in the intake and burning through the cats.

If you idle the engine with the cap off, put your hand over the fill plug hole and sense the pressure. That should tell you what's going on under the hood with the cap off.

The filters are quite good and will trap any grime or other particles that get trapped in the oil. If you're concerned about the condition of your engine, regardless of the current scenario, you should perform an oil analysis with the intent to make this an occurring event at a given frequency of oil changes based on use. I did this through Blackstone, on a modified TDI daily driver engine for years. Eventually sold it when lead became a measurable stat (~350k mi). On a modified 2.7 engine, I've been able to diagnose no measurable contaminants after an overheat at the track a few years ago.

    check oil level.
    check for spills.

if no MIL or codes, good to go.

    mistakes happen.
