Haven't done this, but am interested to hear more about it.

How does the hydrogen remove carbon on things like valves?

Commonly referred to as HHO cleaning does virtually zero for removing carbon build up on intake track or intake valves.
It does deliver a very short term placebo effect giving the perception of cleaning intake carbon build up. It does modestly clean piston tops and exhaust valves but that's about it.
Very popular in the UK but some are gradually catching onto this placebo process.

im not sure what you mean by placebo affect, the carbon is either there . or it isnt ? or is this some type of treatment where you dont actually get to see what it is doing ?

HHO is introduced through induction through the throttle body. It does zero to clean carbon build up on intake track or intake valves. It gets sucked by the intake valves while the car is running and goes straight to the combustion chamber.

ah now it makes sense , much like all the other miracle elixers, that claim to remove carbon by simply injesting.

i did it with a compressor, wallnut shells and a shop vac and still had a hell of a time. cant imagine fluid doing anything

I thought you had done a walnut shell cleaning. Didn't you use the Ford Prefect adapter?
Ya, the HHO is big in the UK and southeast Asia. They all seem to get excited by the immediate but short lived placebo effect.
It may clean the piston tops a bit and perhaps the injector tips but that's about it. I believe it may also help in cleaning out the cats to a lesser degree.

There's a bunch of YT videos on it.
Look to one where they demo'd it on an R8.

I think there's a time and a place for it, but it's not after carbon has been caked on for years. The hard carbon will not come off with this type of solution, but the stuff that's not quite solidified yet may. This would likely work better as an ongoing maintenance instead of a repair. I've been injecting a solution into the intake of my RS4 every oil service since my last mechanical carbon clean. I don't know how much it will help or even do anything. It's only been 2 oil changes, but I plan to take the manifold off after another couple and see how much build up is still there.

So while I can see where this service has it's place, it's not going to remove caked on carbon that's been there for years hardening. It's not an end all and be all solution, but it may be a solution to help extend the interval in which a carbon clean is needed.

    Excellent perspective.
In the same sort of light, I've been thinking that changing out the oil extractor (PCV) at the same time as doing a walnut shell cleaning may also help in a similar fashion. At the time of my carbon cleaning last fall i had a thought of doing it but they were quite pricey so i got them to try and flush out the original one for the time being. I just picked one up yesterday from AliExpress for rediculous cheap and may install this summer.

    Also not a bad idea.

I don't know how the ones for the 3.2 work, but I think the ones on the 4.2 operate off of a little diaphragm that moves. The failure mode with these is that the diaphragm rips or tears and thus the oil gets sent right through and sucked back into the intake. I think I had read somewhere that someone was able to source just the replacement diaphragm and said it was in the $10-20 range. Then he was able to disassemble the original one and replace just the diaphragm. Again I'm not sure if the ones on the 3.2 work the same way, but might also be something to look into.
