    Reliability on 4.0TT?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello all, I’m looking to purchase a 2014 S6 and wondering if there are any reliability issues / problems with the V8 that I will probably encounter . If anyone knows about them it would be you guys so let’s hear what you guys have run into so far .

Also, how many miles do you guys currently have on yours, curious to know how many miles they can take .

    Thanks !

Look over on the threads in the 4.0T specific section.

4.0T cars are blowing turbos due to a bad oil screen design. There is a TSB that extends to 2017 cars so Audi KNOWS about it, but won’t do anything for folks out of warranty.

I also read that a proper fuel injector job needs the motor dropped. The engine is really crammed in there.

    Motor mounts go kinda early.

Very rare failures of the dual clutch transmission. I think I’ve only seen one or two threads.

I would personally not buy any 4.0T car unless I got an extended warranty. If you get an extended warranty then by all means buy one. Cars like the S6/S7 and the RS7 are some of the best examples of combining comfort, appearance, and power.

Lets not overreact on the turbo failures (i'm sure in % it isnt an extreme case to worry about...). Fact is the oil screen is in most case the cause and not a 'lets quickly fix this job so nothing to worry about".
On the other hand, i'm sure there are a ton of 4.0tt owners who have a very happy experience with the platform and no worries.
Personally about to cross the 100k km on my S6 (more then half of those km are stage 1 and 1/4 are stage 2). Beside a failed turbo pressure sensor, i didnt had any mayor or special other malfunctions (holding wood).
I think as long as you respect oil inspections (in my case every 5.000km) and understand you cant floor it cold and give it some time to roll out/cool down...you will be able to enjoy it pretty long :).
*just keep it in your mind things can fail and depending how you will fix it, the bills can add up. Non the less, V8 time is getting at its end...if you can, grap one non you still can ;).

    I’m 47k miles in on a facelift 2016 S7 (identical powertrain to S6)

I’ve been Stage 1 for the past 15k, and out of warranty for 5 months.

I do 10k mile oil changes with a quality fully synthetic oil, and have just decided to drop to 5k oil changes due to the turbo oil screen issue that’s kicking around.

I’ve only had one issue with the car and that’s a failed motor mount. These are expensive as they are active hydraulic mounts, and run about $600 aside (replaced in pairs) and about 5 hours of labour.

Other that that, the car runs like a dream, sounds great and it’s fun to drive.

I’ve got quite a few modifications, so probably TD1 but that doesn’t stop me enjoying the car.

Oh, and Sepang is an awesome colour!

I'm at 87k miles on my 2013 S6. So far, zero major issues, except a thermostat failure under warranty. I've was stage 1 for about a year and Stage 2 now for a couple months. I do 10k oil changes with a quart or two on between due to my driving habits.

Well hearing what you guys said gives me a bit more confidence. Ive mainly heard about the turbos blowing which kind of sucks. I usually do 3-4k oil changes in my 2.0T due to a similar issue.

I'm looking at getting a 2014 S6 with 63k miles on it. Is there any other major problems?
Like valve cover gaskets or anything like that, which I've done on my 2.0T and 3.2 sadly.

I would also check the service history and you’ll need the 70k aka 35k service soon which is a bigger one.

Also also handy, take a decent obd reader with you if you can (vcds mobile or laptop...obd11...) and scan the car. That will give you an idea of the cars current shape and/or hidden faults. At least then you know in what condition it is and if has fault you can either deal to let them fix it first or lower price....(scan the transmittion for amount of launch controles is one indication in who's hands the car was...).
Beside that, like with any other new or secondhand car you need to have some luck.

It is my DD now. I used to alternate between this car and an old Accord, but I hated having to shuffle 3 cars around the driveway.

I think one of the reasons my S6 has been reliable is due to my commute and driving habits. I let the car warmup for ~30 seconds until the RPMs drop. I then have about a 2 mile drive to the highway where I gradually go up to 50 MPH. Then on the highway, I have a 20 mile commute at ~75-80 mph. Finally, I get off the highway and have about a 10 minute drive on backgrounds at 40 mph until work. It gives the car a steady warm-up period, plenty of mileage to get up to temperature (which apparently helps reduce carbon buildup), then a bit of a cooldown period.

I also tend the drive the car fairly hard, but not abuse it. I know which roads to avoid. I don't beat on it until oil gets up to temp. I also get services done timely at a reputable dealer.

I dropped it off at my local mechanic this morning for my service and a general inspection. I've got a couple random rattles and clunks, but nothing too detrimental to the driving experience. I've asked him to give me an estimate to check out the turbos for any signs of failure. At this point, I've decided I'm going to keep this car for a couple more years, even though I'd like something smaller. It's not even worth $30K at this point and anything CPO that is comparable is going to be north of $50K. Forget new. I'm really not interested in dropping $20K when I'm fairly confident I can keep this car roadworthy for far cheaper than that.

I see , well I’m an enthusiast and work on cars myself so I know to let them warm up before running them hard or anything in that nature . But the way you drive it seems to be perfect for a turbo car
