Any B9 Q5/SQ5 with aftermarket trailer hitch?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello Gentlemen,

need to install a trailer hit to pull my motorcycle. I have been browsing around and keep going back to CURT and some other brand that etrailer sells.
CURT is fine as i have used it a few years ago on other vehicles and friend vehicles but i don't like their wiring harness for my SQ5.

Has anyone installed an aftermarket hitch ? if so, which wiring harness did you use?

I have the one from etrailer. Didn't do the wiring yet, as it's primarily used for a bike rack. As for the hitch, fitment was perfect and they have a great install video on their site. Looks like stock, works great for my needs, and was about 1/10 the price of the audi unit

I do plan on doing wiring at some point to pull a trailer, but havnt had the need yet

I do not own a B9, but recently installed the OEM hitch/module/wiring on my 2016 Audi Q5. IMO OEM is the way to go besides maybe something like a Stealth Hitch if you want a sleeker setup. I did a write up on the module coding for the OEM unit on here, should be very similar for the B9. I bought the entire OEM kit for $500ish shipped, the OEM module alone is worth buying OEM if you ever want to tow heavier/larger items. I did notice that Draw-Tite does make a similar hitch to the OEM, but you still would have to buy the module/wiring separately which could end up costing a pretty penny.

I think it was the draw-tite one. Yes I did it myself. Hardest part was getting the fender trim off. After that, I just had the video from their website handy and followed it it a T. Only difference from their video is there was no need to trim the bumper as they stated. Maybe you need to on the q5, but the sq5 bumper fit right back up.

For wiring I do plan on going oem

Thanks, i did see your write up which was well done.

In regards to the wiring, i have been looking for the OEM hitch kit but i cannot locate it anywhere for the 18 or 19 model.
My local dealership said they would get back to me but warned me that it would cost $1,500+

I have the Stealth Hitch on my B9. The harness was part of the package but it's basically just taillight control. The parking sensors still go nuts if you're in reverse with a trailer, and I think you don't have that with the OEM harness but I'm not sure. It's not a big deal and manageable in my opinion.

Any B9 Q5/SQ5 with aftermarket trailer hitch?

Stealthhitch or the one from etrailer? Need to get one soon and install.

Suggestions? Primary use is light pulling and mostly bike hitch from my bikes

Stealth hitch harness. Think it was included in the package. Then you have a choice between a tow hitch or a rack hitch. If you're just hauling bikes then you probably only need the rack hitch. Or you can get a combo pack which includes both tow and rack receivers.

The issue I have with aftermarket controllers is that you can't code them properly via VAGCOM like the OEM module to control key things like ABS, Central Electronics, Engine Cooling etc. If I were towing heavier items regularly I would only recommend buying the OEM module regardless of what hitch you use.

Here's the eBay seller I bought my OEM hitch/module from for the B9 Q5/SQ5 specifically. Worth the price to have true OEM fit/finish/functionality.

Does the OEM harness really do all that? Did not know. It's still fine for me, I'm really just dragging mulch and stuff back from Lowe's 3 miles away. At most I have my zero turn on it for short, low speed trips once in a while.

Yes it does, in my write-up for the coding piece you have to change multiple modules in VAGCOM to switch them to "Trailer" modes. Regardless I rather not worry about improper settings that control main components of my vehicle because I didn't think it was needed. This is one thing that isn't worth saving a few bucks.

This 100%, I did the stealth hitch on my 16 sq5 just for the removable part but its almost identical to the oem in every way for mounting. Dont skimp, get the OEM or the Stealth.

How do you like the Stealth Hitch? I just purchased one for my 2019 SQ5 and am looking forward to getting it on. Hopefully I made the right choice on the hitch!

It's great, I'm sure you'll like it. Obviously the big selling point is that you can't tell there is a hitch system when the receiver isn't mounted. You'd never know it was there unless you were laying on the ground looking up at the rear bumper. The receiver is easy to insert and since it's one solid piece there's no noise like you would have with the standard receiver and draw bar. There also a push-in cylinder lock for safety and security. There is no cutting of any trim pieces too which I liked. I am very happy with it.

I just got the tow package. They do have a combo package includes both the tow and a rack attachment for carrying bikes and with that you get a carrying case. So I picked up one of these for the tow receiver:

I only bought the rack version since it will only be used for bike hauling. Installation wasn't too difficult, helped in part by my mechanic friend. I didn't want to see a receiver or cut plastics so I was glad to discover the stealth hitch. It is great!
Installed today and tested to make sure it all worked together:

I installed the Stealth Hitch by myself but had to call SH for wiring instructions. I love my stealth hitch and I'm really happy with it and I'm sure you will be happy as well.

We have a Stealth Hitch on our SQ5 as well and got it all installed, but the wiring was a nightmare. We called SH to help but spoke with two useless people. Eventually took it to a local shop who wired it for us and we have used it a couple times sense.

I'll see if I can get a picture as well.
