A rock hit my windshield tonight on my drive home ... grrr!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
There i was driving up the 404 on my home minding my own business and bammm! Rock to my front windshield. It put a nice 1 inch 6 point star on it .. damn. Is the dealership the best place to have it replaced. I want to make sure the OEM windshield is used and not an aftermarket ..

Any advice is welcomed. Oh well, it could have been worst ...

Is 1 inch a guess or did you actually measure it? I just ask because I think that’s right around the cut off to repair it.

    Yeah that is annoying

Dealership will sub it out to someone else. Just make sure they use OEM glass (as you noted) and that they know how to set up the auto wipers properly. I imagine most glass shops are used to this type of thing by now.

Agreed on picking OEM over aftermarket. I prefer to have a professional windshield repair or body shop do the replacement has they do them more frequently. I'm curious (not bashing) how much experience a dealership has doing windshields themselves if at all or if they're all sub'd out as Potatohead mentioned.

Okay I just measured it and the stone indent / pot mark is about 3/16 of an inch and the actually webbing is about 3/4 of an inch. I hope it is repairable ... if it is can you see it or is this usually invisible?

Potatohead_RS3 and Skunwerx, good points .. if it has to be repaired, I will definitely insist on OEM and will have a Glass shop do the work. I try to really look out and take care of my car but honest to God i had this crappy feeling that I had a target on me today ... !OX!!! piss me off .

A good repair will be nearly invisible.

Trust me, from someone that has gone through 3, yes 3 windshields in 12 months, you want to go through the dealership to have it replaced. I went to Speedy the first time and had my wiper sensing unit behave very poorly with their "authorized direct replacement" windshield. The way they test it is archaic and demeaning to your intelligence when trying to dispute the issue with them (they basically take a hose and spray it wide open on the windshield and if it comes on they say it is operating properly:/).

The second time I went through the dealership and although they take it to a local windshield dealer as well they tell the dealer what windshield to use.

    Good luck!

I had my windshield repaired and it looks terrible. Essentially the chip is there in all of its glory, but it’s now sealed.

I always use Safelite and request OEM glass. They're the best for a reason.

Living in AZ I have a windshield replaced once a year on one of the cars. Always OEM. Very typical to have glass insurance here. Free replacement with OEM. Check if you have coverage. I use the company that the dealership contracts with for the Audi and the VW.

My car goes to the glass shop tomorrow for its second windshield replacement in about a year. Caught a rock a few weeks ago, and within a day the crack spread from the initial star, and is now about 15" long. The shop is the one used by my dealership, and uses OEM for this car. I got the sense that they didn't have an alternative. Allstate also said to have the lane departure cameras checked and adjusted by dealer if needed, as they are sometimes affected during the windshield replacement. They said the cost of any adjustment is included in the comprehensive insurance coverage.

I also have Allstate and they go through Safelite. Took it there and they pried open the mirror/lane departure camera plastic and broke off a snap inside (I know bc I had to remove everything since they also messed up the wiring of my radar detector). Luckily, they will get new pieces.

Allstate and Safelite also said to get the lane departure recalibrated. When I took it to the dealer, they said if you don’t get a warning/error to leave it be. It’s a 5 hour job for $600 and all the techs hate doing it. Luckily my lane departure didn’t have any problems after the replacement.

    Just things to consider...

I just had it repaired at Speedy glass. Great job. Hard to spot from the outside but can still see it a bit on the inside but okay with me.
