4.0T timing chain job cost? Engine out necessary?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So my 13 S6 was diagnosed with either a skipped timing chain or bad Camshaft adjuster. Worst case it is a complete timing job $$$.

My mechanic has yet to give me the full estimate but did mention that book time for engine in/out is 40 hours.

Ive been hearing mixed answers on wether or not engine actually needs to come out to do timing. Anybody know the answer to this and how much I should expect to pay? Not getting it done by the dealer but anyone who has had the repair done by audi or an indy mechanic and knows the bill/ time would be great help. Thanks.

    Timing chain on the 4.0T?

What the hell. Everyone says this motor doesn’t have this issue.

    Good luck op

I'm going to venture to say it is possible to replace a working good chain with a new one without removing the engine. Meaning they attach a new chain to the old one and slowly work it though.
That being said, in order to diagnose a failure and replace multiple parts I'd think engine removal would be the easiest way.
I'd probably ask the trade in value as it sits.

You will have to either pull the trans, or the engine, or both. You just need access to the back of the engine below the flex plate, so trans has to come off engine. Their choice to how they do that, im a pull both at once kinda guy.

I don’t see how this job can be done properly and thoroughly without the engine coming out.

Everyone says that keep up with oil changes and you don’t have to worry about it.

The old 2.0T had this issue but I’ve never seen a post before mentioning the 4.0T

Check out DT Performance, located in 1201 Springfield Rd. Union,NJ. I have not personally went their since I still have warranty on my S6 but I heard alot of positive things from other fellow Audi members that had similar issues. Give them a call or shoot them a dm on instagram and see what they say.

I know it's a different platform but I just replaced the upper tensioners in my hybrid cayenne without removing the engine. I believe the setups are similar and the tools are the same for our 4.0t. If it's a tensioner issue I bet it can be done without removing the engine.

Cayenne hybrid uses the 3.0 surprisingly.

Yes the 3.0 is notorious for tensioner issues. Mine was so bad that it caused the nylon wear plate on one tensioner to break which caused enough slack for timing issues.i believe the timing chain layout and upper tensioner are similar if not the same across both engines.

Yes, the Audi ATU mentions the newer optimized glide rail # 079109470A in production since April 2017 for the 4.0T (page 9 & 11): https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...50761-9999.pdf

Thanks for all the responses guys...now a quick update:

So the camshaft control valves were checked and those seem to be in good shape.

Next step is putting the car in service position with bumper off, cats out in order to remove the timing cover behind the turbos and check out the glide rails and intake adjuster sprockets. (Was told book time for this is 20 hours... sound right?)

Based on info I received from a forum member who experienced same symptoms as me and with the recall info posted above, im assuming and hoping this is the culprit.....if not its looking like the engine will need to come up. Should have another update by mid next week.

I have nothing to add but just saw you are from Stamford. I grew up in Stamford and now live in Newtown. Hope to see you on the road someday :-)

Had similar symptoms and got my camshaft adjuster replaced.

Although, in my case it was the plastic chain rail guide that is besides the intake camshaft adjuster on bank 2 that broke and pieces of it went into the teethes of the sprocket, causing it to fail.

Cost was around 1300$ CAD parts & labor and engine didn't need to come out. Maybe it'll help you.
