Anyone else drive entirely in Sport mode?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Not that I'm always driving spiritedly, but I cannot keep my S6 out of Sport. I will occasionally guilt myself into Drive, but that usually doesn't last much of my 20 minute commute. Only time it will be in Drive for an extended period of time is if I'm on a call. Otherwise, even on the freeway I'm in Sport. I just enjoy it too much, and grow bored of Drive, even for the mundane commute. I enabled Economy mode, but mainly because I couldn't stand knowing that I could have another drive mode and not adding it. Have I used it? I think I tried during a 60 mile trip and switched back to Individual and Sport within 20 miles.

Anyone else in the same boat? I figure I bought the car for all of the things that make it a performance vehicle, not the MPG's.

    Thanks,

    Ben

I find 1st too long and 2nd too sensitive at higher revs to use Sport much during my commute. Small roads and clogged up town driving though mainly. Sport is reserved for the rare occasions the traffic opens up.

Kind of hoping a TCU tune will fix that though because D is too far the other way.

Driving characteristics in stop/go traffic in "Sport" are not fun at all. Lurching, Throttle is very crisp, looks like I'm drag racing the prious at the red light with minimal foot input. I sport mode to downshift but always leave in "Drive" for normal driving. If I hit an onramp or fun curves, Sport mode it is..

I used to be the “drive in S-mode all the time” guy but not so much after installing test pipes.

Sport mode 99% of the time. But, D only while on work campus 15mph limit. S mode does not like 15mph, or exactly as everyone else said you get the aforementioned lurching.

S-mode in traffic doesn't feel good, especially in 1st gear.. Very lurchy and it slips the clutches differently than in D mode, doesn't feel good for the tranny/clutches. D-mode is too far the other direction as stated above..

Outside of bumper to bumper traffic and cruising on the hwy, it's S-mode all the way..

Yep I pretty much drive entirely in S too, D is only for stop/start traffic and/or when ACC is active. When I get around to enabling E I’ll probably replace D with that mode.

Exactly this. My old 4.2 A6 was known for touchy throttle and if you went on-off-on by accident leaving the light it took off like a scalded rabiit. New A6 with the 3.0 and APR tune is smoother but quieter and faster leading to unintended speeding around town and blowing people away instead of just passing them

Just admit it DSG guys... the ZF 8 speed is a better transmission. quick shifts in sport, smooth like butta in "D."

And to think, I was jealous of the ROW cars because the 3.0T had the DSG as an option. No Thanks!

RS7... Only S mode. Forever. Traffic or not. Only way to go for me. If I wanted E or D I'd buy the Prius that one poster didn't like to drag race... The milltek alone makes it worthwhile... ECU and TCU tunes as well

    Maybe I'm crazy...?

Nope not alone! I saw a thread I bit my tongue on last week. Someone posted about putting their car into an economy mode lol. Who gives a rats ass about gas mileage?! If you can afford this car you can afford gas. If you bought this car you bought it for performance. Maybe they didn’t have an rs7 I guess. I forget there’s 3 liter guys posting here too.

Dynamic/D most of the time. The only other mode I drive in is Dynamic/S. Probably a 80/20 split.

Same for me. But it usually stays in Dynamic/D for me. I’ll go into Dynamic/S if I am on the parkway as it just feels better.

Maybe I'll be the dumb one here, but is Dynamic/D and Dynamic/S actually different in anyway?

I was always under the impression that Dynamic forced the trans into "S" based on my dash readout.

To contribute to the actual topic of this post - I drive in Individual/D often as when I'm going to and from work I'm more interested in calls I'm on or relaxing instead of listening to an exhaust. That's one of the things I love so much about the S6, its dual personality and it does it well. On the weekends running errands I definitely enjoy some Dynamic mode usage though.

S mode simply makes the transmission shift later (at higher RPMs), that's it.

I'm generally always in manual mode so I'm always in whatever mode I feel like at the time

There's a reason these cars have COMFORT mode and SPORT mode... The reason I spent the money on a car like this is so you can have the best of both worlds. Comfort, cruising on highway, not bucking back/forth in Sport mode in Stop/go traffic. Audi Refinement :)

    Fair enough. I respect that.

I do manual with any downtown driving because I like bucking and crackling of the milltek with the constant gas let-off. To each their own I guess!

And no the TCU tune doesn't make it shift smoother at all. Much More aggressive especially 1 to 2. Shifts quicker tho. Although it's not different if just cruising. Very oem feel. But the redline change to 7600 doesn't hurt the power band when you wanna let the stage X go!

2 questions for those in M.

What RPM do you keep the gear typically in when you drive? 2-3k before shifting? (I dunno why driving in M just feels so different to me when I've driven standard my whole life).

And do you all notice a delay from 1-2 sometimes if you are driving casually and click the shifter? (I am stage 2 with APR ECU and TCU tune).

I thought the APR TCU tune improved the manual shift delay. 1-2 seconds seems quite long. I never noticed this in my S6 when in manual mode.

The RS6 is a bit slow in manual. Quite often I hit the rev limiter because of the delay.

I find sports mode to be lurchy and jerky with downshifts on my 2016 Audi A7 3.0T. I refuse to use it often in daily driving or in traffic. Only on open roads and on weekends. Otherwise I am using auto mode 95% of the time.

Ditto. After the akrapovic, I can’t drive in comfort. If I’m in stop and go traffic I might even switch to manual before comfort so I can control the bucks. I also have the COD delete in my APR tune, so between the two I’ve lost a good 5mpg. Oh well!

+1 for S all the time. I rarely drive the car in D. I started to drive more in D with the new baby, she's now 7 weeks old, but I noticed she likes the exhaust drone, keeps her calm and most times puts her to sleep so back to S or M. But go figure when she's in the car seems like everyone and their brother want's to play and line up. Sorry, baby on board, enjoy your moment.

A mix in the RS6. Sports mode holds the gears for a very long time. You can be sitting at 6000+ rpm for a very long time in 3rd gear when you lift of the accelerator. Great for windy roads, but not so good around town.

In my S6 I was in sports mode most of the time.

Like it was previously mentioned by most of the people, Individual/everything sport mode if not in bumper to bumper traffic.

I bought the V8TT for the sound and power and not for the fuel economy.

Hmm, That doesn't sound normal on the A7..I often drive in S mode on mine and there's never any unintended lurching or jerking during upshift or downshifts. It's always very smooth in both drive modes, just more crisp in "S" obviously. I'm tuned with AWE Touring exhaust.

    Cool!

I wonder how different the Sport programs are between the 4, 6, and 7 series?

I love the DSG in D in most cases and S when it's time for fun! I also like Sport in some bumper to bumper traffic because I prefer the responsiveness and delayed shifting in those situations! Having the paddle shifters also makes surprise/instant maneuvers easier to manage on the fly.

My commute to work is about 30 miles, most of it at freeway speeds. Sport does not use 7th gear and I'm not doing much in that mode at 65-70 mph, so I just put it in D.

I've had my A6 3.0T for about a month and a half. I was kinda down on it and really missing a manual car that I was thinking if trading it for a new WRX or manual golf R, or manual S4 if I could find one. Started using the paddle shifters and manual mode and it has made a big difference. I still miss a real manual, but it helps.

I've been toying with the different modes, the only real difference I've noticed is S holds shifts longer than D. I haven't noticed a big difference between Dynamic and Comfort.

Also the exhaust sounds the exact same no matter the mode. And it's WAY too quite. Aftermarket systems are silly expensive so I've been looking into ways of modifying the factory system. I'm leaning toward rear muffler delete and straight piping it, but would like to hear one in person before hacking mine up.
