So, hubs bought me a ‘14 A6 TDI Quattro Prem+

Love it, no complaints, but wanting to know if anyone has found upgrades, tunes, exhausts, etc. for theirs (if ya got one). Because either A. I’m dumb or B. I’m dumb. I cannot find anything for my car, and can’t find the engine code for APR to even know if they offer anything.

I might be dumb, but I’m okay with that lol. Someone guide me to the life that is owning an Audi

Don’t know much about the TDI, but you can do a lot with a few mods from a looks standpoint.

If I were to have your car, I’d get some wheels/spacers for a nice stance, black out the chrome, add an RS style grill, debadge the back, add smoked tint to the tail lights, and add Audi logo puck lights. Probably all in, you’re looking at 3-4K depending on the wheels of course.

Nice ride, hope she’s good to you!

Going to APR, once in the 3.0 TDI, it gives two different options for what one could be my car & I tried finding my engine code on my car to verify, and can’t find it. Missing from the maint book (no sticker) & can’t find under the hood. Maybe I just don’t know exactly where to look.

Congrats! Glad to have another TDI member on here! The torque and mileage on these things is addictive!

Engine code is CPNB for the US TDI. I'd personally skip APR, and go Malone Tuning instead for TDIs. They are well-known and well-established for diesels. They are also very responsive to inquiries, and can walk you through things, what you'll need for various tunes/stages, etc, depending on what you are looking to get out of it.

I am still waiting to get out of warranty to get tuned, I plan to do DPF-delete and Stage 2. Malone provides a couple options--you can go to a Malone dealer (you'll need to find on your website) or purchase/rent the Flashzilla device from them, and do the flashing/tuning at home.

If you DO get your ECU flashed, look into getting your TCU flashed as well, to provide better shifting and performance from the transmission.

If you want to do a diesel particulate filter (DPF) delete, there are a couple companies. Rawtek is located in the USA and their kit (says Q5 TDI but will work on the A6) looks pretty good and has the option of the high-flow DPF if you need it for emissions. There's also Buzzken (I believe are Canadian). Darkside is a known company in the UK that does diesel performance work, including turbo upgrades.

There are kits for the rest of the exhaust, but I'd start with the DPF delete to see if that changes the sound any, then specifically change a few other things on the exhaust.

For an intercooler upgrade, Wagner Tuning makes a great intercooler that is a direct fit, although many folks go with the Euro biturbo TDI intercooler.

Mods pertaining to the rest of the car are pretty much common with any C7 A6 (or S6), so any coilovers, sway bars, wheels, tires, etc, can be done. Lowering the car a bit and throwing on S-Line (or S) body parts is common. RS 6 grille is also a common upgrade. Headlights would be a thing in my book if I had yours, but it's up to you.

Note: I believe the TDI has smaller brakes all around than the A6 3.0T, so if you're looking to upgrade stopping performance, the 3.0T brakes would be a good, direct swap option.

Thankful to have found someone else TDI; I was really feeling defeated when I was looking through different forums and pages for someone who had one! All the information you’ve given me will DEFINITELY be helpful. My husband will do most of the smaller, at home jobs for me so I will be able to let him read everything & he can help decipher the things I may or may not know yet. He’s been a big car guy since he was a kid, so now that we both have what we want (he’s got an ST) I am wanting to define mine to be mine. I can’t thank you enough for all the help, seriously! I’ll keep posting as I make it through some of the upgrades. Step 1 will be tinting those damn windows lol.

You're welcome! tdiclub.com also has a lot of good info, but they are mostly VW (2.0 and 1.9).

Glad to hear you have your personal mechanic! The DPF delete is definitely something that can be done at home. Testimonials from folks with little wrenching experience did the work in several hours.

Tinting is a must! Go ceramic--you can't go wrong there. Idk what legal is in Ohio, but I did 30% all around and 50% on the windshield, and even on 90+ degree days, it cools down relatively quickly.

One other thing: Try to get good diesel. By me, it's hard to get a good quality diesel supply that's not overpriced. Most just say "40 Cetane Minimum", which isn't helpful at all. With less than good diesel, it runs louder, rougher, and I get less fuel economy. There are also a couple additives (such as Power Kleen or Stanadyne) that boost lubricity and cetane a bit. Lastly, if you're concerned about getting diesel smell on your hands from the pump, some folks just buy cheap latex gloves. Keep in the trunk, use one to fill up, and get rid of it right after filling up.

I still have to check out the legality for tinting in Ohio; windshield is a no-go for Ohio from my understanding, but the rest should be fairly simple to browse online. Found a shop local that ya pretty decent work, so I plan to reach out to them for everything. & I have only had to fill up once since getting the car on Saturday, and still above half tank. I might have to do some research for quality diesel stations in and around the area so I know where to go. Diesel on my hands has never bothered me; hubs and I have spent the last 6 for me, 9 for him, years in the military. Fueling trucks, helicopters, etc. I’ve always enjoyed the smell and have some cleaning wipes in the trunk just in case I make a mess like a kid lol.

One other question for ya; for this emissions recall/warranty, what risks do I run tuning wise? I don’t foresee me running this thing into the ground (still gotta be a smart parent) but, I don’t want something to happen and run the risk of losing that coverage. I want to personalize the vehicle enough to be fun and kinda skippy, but don’t want to totally screw myself lol.

Someone over at tdiclub.com has a thread going and said he tuned his, took it in for warranty work, and the dealership flagged it, told him they wouldn't be able to offer any more free warranty work.

Windshield tint is illegal in nearly every state (including MD). That part was completely under the table. Considering it's the largest window, it only makes sense to me to reject the most heat out of it. I don't really notice reduction of visibility either.

    Thank for your service too!

That is always the risk with tuning/modifying cars. If you have to bring in the car for any kind of warranty work and they scan the ECU, it would come up as flashed (even if you went back to stock) and they will flag you TD1 and reject warranty claims for the engine, transmission, and exhaust, most likely. But things like control arms, axles, etc, would still be warrantied.

I forget the name of it, but there is a piggyback or add-on box available that plugs into the harness somewhere in the engine bay and acts like a tuned ECU. On the plus side, for anything warranty-related, you can remove it (go back to stock), drive it in, and won't get flagged. On the minus side, it isn't as custom as some software and you can't pick/choose your options, or go more/less aggressive on it.

One thing to look into is an Extended Warranty as well. That way if you are past the original warranty and it's something the dealership won't warranty b/c you are flagged, you can go to an indy shop you trust and they can likely work with the warranty company to take care of you.

I remember reading the emissions warranty for mine & realized that if I make too many modification, I could really hurt myself if it’s not done properly. So, I just want to make sure before I start wanting to do all these crazy things that I know my coverage if something goes down lol.

I was looking at the RaceChip as a piggyback but, it seemed a little “too good to be true” kinda thing. So, that’s why I started looking more into the mod side. But, after finding the emissions warranty in my glove box, I second guessed the mod side because of something really does get dumb with this thing, I want that 4yr/48k or 10yr/120k (whichever applies at this rate). After I make it outta that though, or once I pay the car off, maybe I will explore more mod side. I really just want the exhaust done. I love the sound of some of these damn cars and just love the concept of making it sound rowdy.

My local dealer was mod friendly until the scandal and now they tell me they have no choice. The tune comes up first item when they plug in the computer. Didn't want to risk it. Have had a Chipwerke plug in tuner box in the wife's Q5 for awhile and while the mechanics see it front and center, it doesn't register on the scan and so they ignore it. Will have mine to install this weekend. Probably not the same as a Malone tune, but does noticeably improve the vehicle. After the warranty? Probably will get Malone and deletes to really maximize this car. I tinted to WI legal and did ceramic. I like the look and it seems a bit cooler.

Ironically, my Service Advisor asked me when I'm gonna get it tuned. Her S4 is tuned, and the dealership has been mod friendly as far as long as I've been there

I get worried about trying to do anything, before building a relationship with my dealership. I have multiple locations out here that I can bounce between to find the right place, but also want convenience. Really looking to do a chip over anything for the next few years until I make it through the warranty or until I can make ends meet if I blow something on it lol.

Took it in today for alignment & new tires, walked out and found a nice scratch in the leather of the steering wheel.. called & no answering machine. So, I get to call tomorrow and be a bit of an ass.. lucky me.

Congrats on the TDI! When it comes to tuning, If you plan on utilizing your local dealership I recommend getting a piggyback module as previously suggested by another member. The piggyback works by tricking the car's sensors into reading different values to adjust boost pressure etc. , it's not quite as refined or effective as a reflash, but your warranty will be safe and they tend to offer a nice bump in power too.

I also recommend getting Carista, it's an OBDII dongle that connects to their app and allows you to not only scan and clear fault codes but enable different factory settings on your car. For example, on my car I enabled gauge needle sweep on startup, windows roll up/down via remote, and Drive Select (I have an A4 which didn't come with that standard). Basically you can make a bunch of little tweaks that make the car a little more enjoyable and it has no effect on the car's warranty status, if you do some searching you can probably find a thread listing all the possible electronic tweaks you can make to your C7 A6.

    Happy modding!

I think you can have an amazing relationship with your dealer, but when they plug it into Audi of America, and it comes back tuned, you will be SOL (shit outta luck). That is what kind of is tough with the diesels, 120000 mile warranty, that is a long time to wait to tune.....

I have the Malone Stage 2 on mine (no deletes yet though). It's quite a nice bump in torque down low, fuel economy is slightly better, and it doesn't fall flat on it's face in the upper RPM range.

Mine is an early 2014 (also after receiving another recall notice from Audi for some emissions components, verified by part number I have Euro emissions components), so that may explain the higher than normal dyno numbers.

Green numbers were stock, other are tuned Stage 2, wheel HP. I may do the deletes, but will most likely change the turbo at the same time. Waiting to hear back on suggestions from Malone.

If you buy the FlashZilla from them, you can flash it at home. Just plug it in to the car, e-mail them your stock file, and they email you a file back to flash. They also have a choice of linear pedal (stock pedal response) or sporty (I personally found it a little too aggressive when driving clients around as the initial input was quite abrupt).

You can also do the BiTDI intercooler as mentioned above (on my to-do list). The deletes will help fuel economy due to no more regens of the DPF, however there is a smell associated with deleting unless you spring for the SCR Cat upgrade. There's also bolt-on hybrid turbo options available as well that will add another 50-100 ftlb and 100whp.

Give Keir or Owain at Malone a call. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised how much better it drives after.

With regard to the warranty, if you look over on the european forums (and here for that matter) the main failures are all to do with the AdBlue, the AdBlue pump, the AdBlue injector, etc. On the "fixed" TDI's, the EGR is also getting plugged up (and also builds up more soot in the intake). If you delete the alphabet soup (DPF, SCR, EGR) the failure rate of other components on these engines is almost nil, unless you get bad diesel or don't replace the fuel filter every other oil change (which in turn takes out the high pressure fuel pump). Mine never went in for the "fix" and since I started receiving letters to bring it in to get the European emissions components replaced on mine, I haven't been to the dealer so I don't get neutered. This applies to the Q5 TDI we have as well. It has almost 140k on it and hasn't skipped a beat. My old man had a 2011 Touareg TDI that racked up just over 200k before the buyback and the only 4 trips to the dealer were AdBlue component and 1 NoX sensor related.

I unfortunately was lucky enough to buy a “fixed” TDI. When the dealership got it at Auction, it had already been completed. Assuming the person who owned it before me was a bit of a lump and had no idea what the capabilities of this car were. I don’t believe I have the AdBlue (considering I don’t have the cute little cap in the fuel fill area) but, I have 100k or 5 years, 7 months left on the warranty. Going to do a Mangaflow Catback on it at the beginning of the new year & plan to get the Chipwerke piggyback later this summer. Going to keep it simple for the time being, run it at a lower stage until I figure out what the dealer will or won’t do if I decide to pump it up a bit. This thing can get down stock, but I just want a little more out of it. Looks wise? I can’t wait to meet the marks I want for it. Plan to do a Mardi Gras White dip, new wheels & front lip/rear trunk spoilers. Tint is schedule for next weekend, so I will get this bad boy in and get squared away with the sun for now. Can’t wait to see progression. Eventually plan to do a chrome delete on it too. Shiny drives me nuts

After 40k I went for it and got an APR Tune. It did not catch up with me until the 2nd round of the new down pipe with a dpf and diesel cat from the EPA settlement. That happened at just under 60k miles. It was the first time my dealer mentioned this would be the last round of warranty work due to the "modified ecu".

I certainly hope it last for years to come but the increased driving enjoyment has certainly outweighed the increased risk at this point in the vehicles life.

OP, did you ever end up modding?
