Last chance to change my mind - downpipes

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I’ve been APR stage 1 for about a month now now and I love it and have decided to go stage 2 for my 2016 S7 with stock sport exhaust. I’m leaning heavily toward APR downpipes for the cost and included stage 2 tune. I have read about potential issues with exhaust leaks and needing a spacer for the o2 sensors but it seems that’s a non-issue with the APR tune, correct?

Should I go with a different brand downpipe? In addition to costing up to $1000 more, then I’d be paying for the tune on top of it. It seems the APR downpipes just make sense BUT I would be willing pay more up front if I have to, in order to get it right the first time.

    Thanks for the input.

There are others to check out. Mike's DP (Russian) which has HFC in the same location as OEM and doesn't throw any CEL or leaks. The other is JHMotorsports which they just released recently. There's is similar to APR with xpipes. http://mikes-custom.ru/index.php/com...-c7?Itemid=618

FWIW - I had APR DPs on my S7 and didn’t have any codes. I used the J spacers and never had any issues. I ran EPL and they don’t code them out...passed inspection with stock file. I got the DPs on sale.

Just switched to a RS7 last weekend - S7 was totaled. Working with the insurance to pull them off. They said offered no value to the vehicle 🤷🏾*♂️.

I’ll let you known based on their condition.

Thanks. Everyone seems to speak highly of Mikes but I can’t even figure out how to read the website let alone order the correct thing, as I don’t speak russian. Also I didn’t know JHM did the downpipes, I had seen their exhaust recently but I thought that was full exhaust for DPs plus car back. So thanks for that info. Do you know anything about it?

I guess both of these get back to my original question: they’re a reasonable price around 2k but are they better enough than APR to justify it (plus paying 350 bucks for the tune)?

I paid about $1550 for my APR downpipes brand new. There are deals, you just have to ask around the various advertisers on this forum. It came with the coupon code for the APR Stage2 upgrade.

You can email Mike through his contact page. Use Google chrome to translate the page in English. Mike is also fluent in English. The quality is one of the best I've seen. As for JHM, they have X-pipes in place downstream from the DP's. They stated the X-pipe equalizes flow between both exhaust banks. When you are not in boost, in creates a scavenging effect that pulls the exhaust gasses away from the engine creating more torque. It also helps with drone and a more exotic exhaust note. As for your question if it's better than APR? I don't have enough data points to comment. I personally like where Mike's keep the cats in the oem location.

Great info, thanks. I now have no idea what to do hahaha, but more to think about. I’m in no rush I suppose.

I use r_2_racing downpipes on my car (link below). I bought the exact ones in the link and had Cerakote applied inside (piston coating) and out (Arctic Black oven cure 1800-degree). I can hover my hand above them comfortably with the vehicle running after driving. I also had the piston coating applied to my SRM inlets on the outside too and while they may not look pretty, it resists any heat-soak from the radiating heat in the engine bay.

If you contact them (they are fluent in English), they will do whatever you want so if you want cats, they can build you a set. They fit perfectly, are stock location and configuration (I have no codes on stock tune), and are built very well. The only "problem" I have with mine is that the hangar tabs are not located properly (angling, not placement) so I could not use them. It has no ill-effect though as I have been running them without the tabs for awhile now.

Now that’s the kind of price that I want to see! Thanks for the link, I am definitely thinking about them.

How long have you had them on?

Similar to advice above, you can email at [email protected]

Very responsive given the time difference and I just told him what I wanted versus trying to use the website. I ordered mine on 4/12 and had them here on 5/7. Hoping to install them in the next week or two.

I think it ultimately boils down to what you see is value, I paid 1600 for new APR downpipes during a Black Friday sale that included the stage 2 code. AMS downpipes which seem to have great reviews here cost 2700 plus the cost of stage 2 about 325

I'm having difficulty seeing the value in those, as they'e non-catalytic and the collectors/reducers are just welded tubular sections, not cast inconel or billet stainless as with the APR, HPA and AMS options.

I've had APR for 2 years now. I initially needed to use some permatex exhaust paste to eliminate a leak at the downpipe-midpipe connection, but they have worked perfectly ever since. If you're going with an APT tune, you won't go wrong. Both Mike's and AMS pipes are excellent. I've seen each first-hand, and thier welds and fitment are both top notch. In other words, difficult to screw this up.
