Question Code P2188 System too rich at idle speed (Bank 1) - Problem: Need Help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have been trying to get to the bottom of this code: P2188

So far i have done a Carbon-buildup cleaning, New OEM injectors, New spark plugs, New MAF sensor, New PCV valve.

The car hesitates and doesn't always start on the 1st try if it sits for a while. Once its on and turn it off, it starts right away.

I thought it was a MAF problem but i just replaced it with a new OEM one and still having this issue.

Can someone direct me to a DIY on how to VAG-COM the HPFP and check if its working correctly?

Check for air leaks, An air leak reduces the air in the system which may result in a rich run at idle.

Mechanical pump as the “High Pressure Fuel Pump”?

It’s mostly at start-up, it just hesitates and struggles to start if it sat for over a couple hours or so.

Let us know when you figure it out. I’ve been getting the P2188 for awhile and the code clears itself. However it just started hesitating on startup similar to what you describe yours is doing. I’m at 115k miles.

This shit sucks, same here. The code did clear itself also.

But try this, before you turn it on. Open the driver door, wait 20 seconds, put key in ignition and press once turn on accessory mode only (without pressing the brakes). This i believe will prime the system and then turn on the car by pressing brake pedal and key once more.
I've been doing this and it seems like its not hesitating when i do this.

Thinking it has something to do with the fuel system or an electrical problem.

I'm going to buy a HPFP anyways, sick and tired of dealing with this. Not knowing what the problem is.

I had the same exact symptoms, same exact code P2188.

Solved by replacing the HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump).
Relatively easy fix, buy a new cam follower while you're in there. Mine at 151k miles seemed fine, but now is a really cool desk part, nice match with my polished, 7A 20v piston pencil holder.

    06J-127-025J HPFP
    06L-109-311 Cam follower

L-R: Old, 151k miles. New HPFP.

    Thanks for sharing this ^

I just ordered mine through audiusaparts where i buy alot of my oem audi parts.

However my original “old” hpfp part # is 06J127025E and they said that the 06J127025L is the latest based on my vin #.

You have Hitachi and ends with J

    What year is car? B8.5?

@S4_SH1640 - Correct, looks like the latest Genuine Audi version is 06J127025L.

I work in the automotive parts industry, purchased the OEM Hitachi version from one of our suppliers, 06J127025J.
My Audi is a 2012 A4 Avant S-line sport with original CAEB engine at 159,600 miles and the original that came off was Hitachi as well.

ECSTuning shows progression of previous revisions.

The pricing between the two parts his huge. Is it the same part in a different box?

    ECS Tuning Pricing

    06J127025L - $492.00

    06J127025J - $263.00

Maybe the price is lower because it's the older version so they want to clear it from their inventory, sell them faster?
