Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) Malfunction after Replacing Rear Brakes and Rotors

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I changed the rear brakes and rotors yesterday and started the process with using the OBD Eleven tool to perform a scan, and no faults were detected. The OBD Eleven tool was then used to open the electronic parking brake. The rotors and pads were replaced, and the OBD Eleven tool was used to close the parking brake. Everything was going to plan, until I ran a scan which indicated two issues with the parking brake (53). After clearing the fault codes, I reran the scan and the codes appeared again.
    • Fault Code 02432: Left parking brake motor voltage supply
    • Fault Code: 03288: Brake pad replacement mode active

At the moment, the parking brake switch flashes red, and the yellow parking brake malfunction icon is illuminated in the drivers information center. I am able to open and close the parking brake using the output test feature as a work around.

The work did not take long to complete, but it was not connected to a battery charger during the processes.

For fault code 02432, I plan to inspect the cables, remove and inspect the connector, and reconnect. Hopefully, that solves the problem.
For fault code 03288, I will connected the car to battery charger, and hopefully, that will allow me to redo the open, close, and calibrate the rear.

Any suggestions or solutions would be helpful.

Just in case the replacement parts info is below.
    • Zimmerman rotors
    • Hawk 5.0 brake pads

    Thanks,

    Randy

When you replace the rear rotors you have to press in the parking brake to account for the increased pad size. You can rent the tool from autozone.

Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) Malfunction after Replacing Rear Brakes and Rotors

Did you “end line change”? Did you pump the brakes? Is the e-brake working?

I use obd11 & I’ve had this error come up when I switched on the car ignition before resetting the module. The errors cleared once I 1) pumped the brakes 2) ended the line change.

I make sure to turn the car off after opening the rear parking brake. If voltage fell too low while you swapped the rotors/pads then the parking brakes could have gotten fried and would need to be replaced.

    Good luck

Thank you for the tips and trick. As it turns out, the issue was the left rear brake was not connected to the electronic parking brake. I removed the wheel and it was very obvious. Either I forgot to connect it, or I did not connect it securely enough. After the EPB was connected, I attached the battery charger to the car. Then I connected the OBD Eleven to see if I pre-conditions were satisfied. The first try, the OBD Eleven tool would not let me move forward with the process, because it did not detect the battery charger. Perhaps it takes the car a few minutes to recognize a battery charger is connected. After a few minutes, I tried again, the pre-conditions were satisfied. To be cautious, I reopened the calipers first to make sure both sides were both open, and then closed them. Then I was able to complete the step called 'Apply Pad' or 'Attach Pad'. After that, I scanned the vehicle and no faults codes appeared. Then I cycled the EPB switch on the center console and it worked normally, and a solid red light illuminated when the EPB was engaged--no light when the EPB was off. Lucky for me it was an easy item to identify and resolve.

The car is driving well and all four brakes work properly. The rear brakes were a lot easier to replace than the front.

Besides making sure all connections are secure, another lesson learned is to have a shorter torque wrench if you don't have a lift.

Again, thank you for the tips.
