    Battery Charging

I don't drive my 3.2 much so I wanted to maintain the battery charged in it. Does the battery have to be taken out of the car to be charged, or can I just hook up the charger to the jumper location under the hood and leave the battery plugged in as it normally is?

If your charger has a trickle mode, you can just leave it in the car. That's how battery tenders work. Should be low amperage setting.

Just be sure it's actually keeping it charged (sometimes I have to move my cables a bit to get a good connection)

Gotcha. I have a trickle maintainer/charger. Should I connect it to the battery or to the jump terminals?

Good question I would assume either would be fine.

Battery would be ideal because then you don’t have to leave the hood open.

You can go to the battery, the front terminals or even to a 12V constant. The cigarette plug under the armrest is on all the time, so you could plug into that (if your charger has a 12V plug; you could fabricate one too).

I personally have a "save a battery" 50 Watt charger that I leave a ring terminal set permanently tied to battery with the cord out to the trunk. That way, I just run an extension to my trunk and plug in when needed.

I've got one with a trickle charger, an overnight charge, and a several hundred watt (I believe) charge that's capable of starting the car through a wall outlet. In my experience, you can trickle charge either straight to the battery, OR through the terminals under the hood

Personally, I would use the terminals under the hood. This requires the power to pass through the power control module (connected to the positive terminal in the trunk). This module will regulate flow into and out of the battery. Connecting directly to the terminal in the trunk bypasses the module. Effectively removing a safety feature of the electrical system. That’s just my .02.

I don't think there's an shunt in there to reading charge current, but I could be wrong.

My dad's A8 has been using a charger directly to battery for about a decade with no ill effects.

This is similar to what I have on my battery:

Do you guys have chargers with smaller cables than mine? Both my jumper and charger cables are very very close to touching if you're not careful, and have touched, since the + and - terminals under the hood are so damn close together.

This is what I use, not so much on the A6 but more so on my S4 which is hooked up to the trickle charger whenever I'm not driving it. You can get the quick disconnect which is what I have or the regular hookups that are extremely low profile and work on the A6.
