I got a Interstate battery that was correct size for my car and replaced myself, since I have a Ross-Tech cable I was able to go into module for battery and update serial number by one digit and good to go.
You could install new battery that meets specifications for your car and not recode anything and it will work but your system will think it is still the old battery

I installed a new battery on my b8.5 and didn’t have to do any coding.

$500?!? At that price you an buy a battery and a vcds cable and you'd still end up spending less. The dealer doesn't even charge that much. Sorry to say but you got seriously screwed.

Reprogramming takes 10 minutes at most.

what's the harm if it still thinks it's the old battery?

Re-coding tells the Energy Management S/W that a new battery has been installed, and therefore, it has a different discharge rate/state than the battery which has been (previously) installed for X years. It is an algorithm to determine how the alternator charges the battery.

You can use an aftermarket battery in-place of the OEM battery, however, re-coding should still take place. With regard to re-coding (with a VAG-COM), since an aftermarket battery will not have a S/N, the existing S/N should be incremented numerically (a "dummy" S/N) so the Energy Management S/W sees a new battery has been installed.

As for the OEM battery, depending on the battery P/N, some OEM batteries are cost competitive with their aftermarket counterparts. I'm on my 3rd Audi, and I typically get around 8 years on the OEM battery.

    From GenuineAudiParts (I picked a 2010 A4):

    https://genuineaudiparts.com/parts/2...bgroup=BATTERY

Check your P/N to determine the OEM CCA rating (380 - 580 CCA) in this example.

I picked up and installed a new battery yesterday. Usually I purchase OEM batteries from the local VW dealer for a competitive price. However, this thread Clicky click® inspired me to do a little research. This battery Clicky click® matched the specs of my OEM battery right down to the part number, manufacturer and BEM code. When I coded it in VCDS I only had to change one line of code.

The price was $165 plus there was a 25% discount code if I bought within 72 hours. I purchased it online with a local pickup from the store down the street. After returning the core my total price ended up being $132.

I buy my batteries at advance auto, usually AGM Platinum or Gold autocrafts, because they are made by the same company that makes the OEM batteries, johnson controls. I use a 25% off coupon code on retailmenot, and pick up in store. I've done the cold reset shortcut by just changing a digit in the part number, but i was told that it automatically resets when it detects a new battery after a certain number of hours.

No one is panicking. The OP just asked a simple question. Audi designed it this way; and there is a by the book procedure. One can choose to follow it or not.

The other day I was desperate as I had a flat battery.
Went to the local battery shop and they didn't program.

from memory it was the LN6 Delkor AGM battery that costed me $635. (I think it was a 1000amp?)

but yeah, what happens when the ECU thinks its the old battery?, will it eventually display a replace or check/replace battery alert in the MMI?

How do I know which part number is for my allroad? Advance auto has like 5 same batteries compatible with my car with different PR-XXX.

The dealer has one for $240 plus 10% discount for Audi club. Their battery carries 5 years full replacement.

There is no specific part number, you can run the biggest battery they offer, which I think is the H9, the bracket accepts 3 different sizes, H7, H8 and H9. The different factory equipped batteries had alot to do with the options, for instance cars with auto start stop had the larger H9's in AGM, but any of these will work for your car. I think I put a autocraft gold H8 in mine and it was originally the smaller H7, id have to check the receipt, I know it was the larger of the two.

Does it make sense to get AGM? Mine is the original from late 2012. I think I'm pushing it. The local store has AutoCraft Platinum AGM Battery, Group Size H8, 900 CCA but 950 is out of stock. Price is the same for both.

I mean it's really a matter of budget, AGM batteries are better quality, more durable and do better in the cold weather. With the correct coupon code you can get it pretty cheap as well at advance. Worth the investment in my opinion.
