If you are going to pull the IM to do the water pump that's a good opportunity to do a valve and intake carbon cleaning.

you can do the water pump without pulling IM , but if i was, i would do as above and even consider throwing in 4 new injectors and seals.

Need to replace the water pump and thermostat housing, which are connected and can be purchased together. The actual leak is very likely the plastic housing, and not the water pump itself. I had such a hard time with this DIY, because it's a bear to remove the bolt that gets the water pump belt off. The water pump kit I got was after market. The pump gasket was cheap and just leaked after install. Had to reinstall my original pump with the new thermostat housing. And... it was hard but did so without having to remove the water pump belt (and that terrible bolt Audi put in - there's a special tool for it). It's been good for over a year, but was a stressful job because of that darn bolt. I stripped the heck out of it. Hopefully you get through that ok, because it's better to replace the housing, pump, and belt when in there. Many have success doing the job, but mine went about an odd way.

Go with one of the new metal housing water pumps, it will save you alot of headaches d own the road. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/aud...af-06h121026dd

If you do replace the injectors, only because its easier to remove the intake to get more hand room. BOSCH 62819 can be had for about $54 dollars a piece, you need 4, comes with all the seals.

Don’t stress about that - trust me most of the time nothing goes easy and the stuff you see on TV and youtube excludes endless cleaning, stripped bolts, impossible to reach items that makes DIY a frustrating nightmare sometimes..

The water pump is a big job. I've done some pretty big car repairs and this one ranks up there with one of the hardest and longest i've done. There are several "unknowns" I ran into.

Are the coolant pump and water pump the same thing? Why not have it replaced under the recall?

No, if you look down by the power steering pump, just below the alternator, you will find the "after run coolant pump" which cools the turbo down after engine shutdown.

My 11 has it but I thought it was at the back of the engine. Will have to check.
