Question Smaller Side Mirror Retrofit...is it possible?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey All,

I'm currently going down a rabbit hole and my searches have come up short. I just recently purchased a 2014 SQ5. It's amazing, aside from the massive side mirrors that are pretty difficult to see out of when making a left turn.

Soon, i'm going to undertake the project of trying to use a A4 size side mirror, on the base of the q5/sq5 mounting plate. Again, I have no idea if this is possible, or what it will look like. Does anyone know of anyone who has tried this, or attempted something like it?

Maybe I'm out of my mind, but if this could work, cost effectively, I think many people would benefit from it!

    Cheers

Looking forward to seeing if this works and will definitely do this mod. I agree with the trouble seeing out when taking a left turn.

Hi all, interesting… I have my sq5 since 2015 and the side mirrors were never a problem for me. I admit that it's huge. I just move my head to different angles as I turn.

Maybe its just me...but coming from a few A4's and an S4, I've never had a side mirror that big before. Getting a few more parts from a salvage yard and the fun starts!

Seems like the same folding mechanism. Could it be bolted straight on the auto folding hing and wired? IMG_0463.jpg

Thats kind of what I was thinking. Using the mounting base of the q5 mirror and swapping parts really.

I think the biggest issue you'll run into with trying to integrate a Q5/SQ5 base plate with another model is getting the mirror piece/body colored cover to match up. Meaning where it folds, since your going from a fairly large assembly to a smaller one. IMO the best way would be to have someone 3D print a new base plate that matches up with the new mirror and the Q5/SQ5 factory door. As long as the plugs match up, I'm sure this could almost be plug and play.

I'm a little guy, 5' 4", I have the seat almost all the way up. Left turns are difficult especially when I must avoid a concrete divider. Please "PM" me if you find a solution. Thanks! "LK"

Exactly what I had planned! I measured the baseplate of the Q and the A4, definately different. So now I have to search for someone to take the baseplate of the A4 and enlarge it to fit the Q5. Oh the fun of inventing!

these mirrors are even worse where I live. In san francisco, i am often driving up really steep hills with stop signs at the top. The mirror is perfectly blocking and preventing me from seeing any driver on my left also waiting at the 4 way stop. Super annoying.

Its funny how everyone likes different things, one of the things I loved from day one was how big the side mirrros were vs the tiny ones on my last car. It was honestly a bonus good thing for me.

Just a quick question, can somebody post up a comparison of the US spec mirrors compared to Euro/ROW spec? Just wondering how massive these mirrors really are and which ones I have....

    thanks

I don't think the US mirrors differ any in size from the Euro/ROW. Besides them being a bit large, I never have any blindspot or blocking issues. I think they go well with the size of the vehicle, I would think if you go too small they will look out of place if anything.

Yeah they are the same size because for a period of time I had euro glass.

I am short-ish (5’8”) and set my seat fairly low, like a car. If I set my seat higher, the mirrors wouldn’t obstruct my vision nearly as badly.

Well thanks, now that I started focusing on it, I can't unsee it. haha But yea, I feel the same way, haven't really had any visibility issues so far.

Yea I would think the only way someone would have visibility issues were if the seat was too low and they were shorter. Which in any vehicle you will take away some visibility.

I'm same height and have the same problem, the other day I almost drove into a Hyundai accent as he was to my left at a 4 way stop and my mirror completely blocked his car from being seen. Raising my seat up a few inches helped but it feels awkward now, especially when I get into my lowered B5 or B6.

I've also been searching to see if anyone's retrofitted smaller mirrors but no luck yet.

Your best bet is probably a4/s4 or a5/s5 I would think, given they all share the “b8” and “b8.5” platform. But I highly doubt it will be plug and play...
