    United Motorsports tune question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Can someone please explain to me how UM's stageless adjustable tune works for the S3?

When I email UM it's like they're avoiding to directly answer me re the stageless part. They basically just say if I buy their user cable, I can adjust boost and ignition. Well, how do I know what value to set? Do I set something different for every gear? What if I set the boost too high?

This is the worst advertised tune in terms of explaining their product.

They also said if I get the proflex kit, I can run any blend of ethanol I like. I assume this includes E85. But they don't mention needing fuel system upgrades, how is that possible?

    Thank you!

i agree in that UM advertisement is TRASH. with that said they put the time and work into all their tunes. i absolutely LOVE them. i would run 27-28PSI without a down pipe and im currently at 29 with a downpipe. you can set different PSI on launch and things of that nature. you do not need any fueling upgrades with the proflex. they give you the sensor and it automatically detects the ethanol regardless of blend you run, whether it be e30 e40 and so on.

I assume you would need MPI and LPFP to run E85. MPI is great especially because it pays for itself since you don't have to pay for carbon cleaning services, but good luck passing smog in California.

    Thank you for the information.

So max PSI and launch psi are the only 2 settings you can change, and the computer will take care of the rest?

Have you ever had compressor surge on 29 psi, or needed to update diverter valve or blow off valve?

I also assume both are needed, but Fred from UM never said anything about it in his short emails.

I didn't know MPI will fail smog in CA, that's important. thank you for letting me know.

I was talking with Bluewater Water Performance about it:

To be able to run full E85 with your set up, we will need to do an upgraded low pressure fuel pump, the UM Flex kit, and also add a port injection fueling kit.

We can do just the UM ProFlex kit on stock fueling. The best power gains would be on an E30 fuel blend, so you will have to figure out the best mixture of gas and E85 to achieve that optimal blend. You can run full E85 on stock fueling, but the boost is automatically reduced (by quite a bit) because the stock system can't keep up with the additional requirements for full E85.

Realistically, it's best to do either all of it, or none of it. They are all required to run E85 when on a Big Turbo, so it is beneficial to have regardless, if that is your end goal.

Thank you for the information, that was helpful.

I don't plan on going big turbo, or perhaps not even a down pipe, but I just wanted to be informed so I can make the best decision for me.

Do you happen to know how much fuel pump and port injectors upgrade costs?

For the UM flex kit, pump, and injectors with install they quoted just under 3500.

Haha nice man!!! I think I’m around 3k miles with it or so now and it’s still just amazing. I finally found pure E85(I have an E70/75 station close to me) up by our new office and that extra alcohol content has made a difference. Same gas station has E98 for sale in 5 gallon jugs for $30 I’d like to try as well.

OP: throw in 3 gallons of E85 when you fill up with your UM tune, you’ll notice a difference and the tune is made to do that.

Thank you. I also read that somewhere else too.

But when I emailed UM to confirm, Fred's answer was "I would not suggest adding and E85 without our flex."

my tuner told me that i can add 2-3 gallons and i would be fine. i think the issue is more what happens after you go through the gas? if you were to put another 2-3 gallons in without running the tank to E could potentially be an issue and why he advised against it. It would also stress the computer when toning back the ethanol content if you stopped adding the E85.

Shouldn't be an issue lowering the E content on that setup.

i had originally stopped adding e85 because i thought my tune was cutting power. turns out i was was losing traction and the computer cut power because of the rev limiter

I have everything UM offers on my S3. The only things you can adjust with the user cable / software program are max psi, which you can change from like 18-29, launch control psi, which i think is set to 9 for street tires... you can run 12-15psi with better tires. I also have their proflex kit and MPI, so the software tells me ethanol content.

Regarding advetising, UM is ran by 2 people..... Though their advertisement / website isn't the greatest, their tuning / support imo, is.

MOD List for the hell of it....

I pointed this advertising issue 3 years ago, it is terrible, their website is a joke, their menu is terrible, once you click on something it would show you a traffic cone and it would say: oops we are working on the website..(showing a traffic cone)
The sweet CTS 500 boss and 600 boss kits are matched to UM tune but with such poor website it is a deal breaker. To me the undisputed kings of marketing and advertising are and always be APR, these guys are experts on marketing, their presentation is superherb, and they have a very good customer service. Unitronic is good also.

I think the fact that iroz, dbv2, and cts kits are all supported by UM says more about their quality than a terrible website.
