    2014 SQ5 reliability ?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

Coming from a 2010 BMW X6 M that recently bit the dust. I was looking for another truck that was a bit more reliable but still fun to drive. Eyeing the 14' SQ5, anything I should keep my eyes out regarding this year? There is one I see for 110,000km (68k miles) which I'm interested in and will be going to check it out in a few days.

This question is very common. A quick search should yield a lot of results.

I have a 15 SQ5 with 52k miles and the only issue I had was rattling sound coming from panoramic sunroof on uneven roads. I was under warranty and it did not happened again after dealer replaced the frame. No other issues whatsoever.

I had a 2014 SQ5 for 2.5 years and the only issue was a DRL control failure which was covered under CPO. I traded it at 130,000km for a 2016 SQ5.

In the Toronto market, the 2014s are way over-priced. For a non-CPO they should be mid 20s at best You can get a 2016 for $40k CPOd until 6yr/160,000km. That should give you way more peace of mind as repairs can be expensive.

If your budget doesn't stretch out that far then make sure your 2014 has new or nearly new brakes and tires or haggle down accordingly. Those items alone will bump your cheaper car closer to the $34-35k.

When I traded, my car went straight to wholesale and I never saw it hit the retail market again. It needed new brakes (about every 75,000km is a good ballpark) and tires were more than 50% worn. To CPO an Audi dealer will change brakes and tires if they are more than 50% worn which is an expense they budget for in their low trade in offers.

My $0.02 would be to avoid non-Audi sellers and get as new a CPO model as you can afford with new-ish brakes and tires.

I just picked up a 2014 SQ5 last night actually. Couldn't pass up the deal, at it has 60K on the clock. I've read that the 3.0 engines are pretty reliable, but it comes down to regular maintenance and keeping up with it. We bounced back and forth from getting a regular Q5 2.0T and an SQ5. So far, after only drive 20 miles in it, big smiles on my face!

You are telling me. 140,000km 2014's are asking 28k but i noticed they are sitting for a long time.

I've noticed CPO are asking for 4-5k more than non Audi Dealers. If its 6 years warranty (CPO), I'm, gonna have to wait another 6-8 months until I see 2014's drop like flies.

I doubt you'd find a 2014 CPOd. 2016s on AT from an Audi dealer will be CPO.
Right now there are two at Queensway and one at Pfaff Vaughan ranging $42,998-$44,598. I paid $41k at the end of December with 74,000km.
You don't mention a budget but if you're not able to go over $40k then you'll need to do your due diligence.
I've never done a PPI. The CPO process does that and you have recourse if you're not happy or something turns out to be amiss.
I am not affiliated with or recommending any particular dealer or vehicle.

The supercharged 6 in combo with the ZF8 transmission and Quattro awd system is a very reliable power train.

The only issue I’ve had, even with stage 2 tune and TCU tune is a minor irritation with a glitch in Audi’s MMI system and Sirius sattelite radio. There are threads here. It loses the channel presets when Sirius updates channels. Have to manually reload and save them.

That’s it. No fix for it, either.

But, at 43,000 miles (purchased new) the car has otherwise been totally trouble free.

Have a '14 we bought new in November of '13; 77k miles. Aside from a few minor things covered by warranty - bad oil sensor, some rattles - been flawless. Still runs great and have been very happy with it. Plan to keep for a long time.

Definitely agree checking to see if new brakes, they're pricey and would need to be done around that time. Good luck!

I bought a '14 new, and it operated flawlessly, all the way to the scene of the crash (not my fault).
I loved it so much I got a '16 and modded the hell out of it @5k miles. 65k now and running like a champ.

Nearing 64k miles, purchased at 41k in Sept 2017. No major issues. I had to replace rear upper control arms recently but that’s self-inflected wound given I’m lowered on coils. It’s rides smooth and quiet feels like a brand new car. I luckily haven’t had sunroof issues.

Small issue with Homelink but I believe it’s more my buildings garage door system’s fault there.

Replaced my front rotors/pad early when I did my rears because I couldn’t stand the brake dust. Front rotors are a bit pricey so be aware of that.

41k on my 2014 SQ5. No issues to date.

However, after doing Stage 1 (2 weeks ago), EPL recommended that I change spark plugs every 25k miles (Audi says every 55k). So I just changed them... they did look pretty black and bad. So you may want to consider changing the spark plugs out sooner than 55k.

Also, get a dip stick for your oil. Mine does burn a bit with the OEM Castrol recommendation. Not much, but the Dip stick is much more accurate than the MMI.

The oil-level sensor is known to be flakey (or is it the hood latch?). Having a dipstick allows you to manually check it rather than panic and overfill it, which is bad, mkay.
