I purchased a pre-activated SIM through FreedomPop. I used OBDEleven to code the SIM usage to "automatic" to detect the external card. Is there a way to change the APN on the MMI?

My trial AudiConnect services expired and I really want my Google maps and traffic light indicator working again without paying an arm and a leg.

I am interested in getting this working as well, after my soon to be expired trial. But for what I have read so far, no one has gotten this to work yet.

It appears there are 2 changes required to even recognize the external SIM. I've only done the second change. I will report back after I've done the first change.

    5F > Adaptations:

    -Vehicle configuration-Sim_card_mode_switch = preset
-Internal SIM card: use = automatic

Getting external SIM to work will only work for the WiFi hotspot... It wont renew the AudiConnect license entitlements for the other things.
Keep in mind that after your trial expired, the car still has data service running to provide the AudiConnect services that remain free -- remote lock/unlock, car finder, vehicle status, stolen vehicle locator, etc. If you check your license entitlements in the MMI, thats what determines whether those things work or not.

So I made the second change using OBDEleven. The car asked if it should use the external SIM or phone bluetooth for calls which makes me believe it's being recognized.

Just like RickNY stated, it appears the internal SIM always checks for an active AC subscription. Google maps and traffic light indicator is linked to AC only and will not work, period! This is extremely disappointing but it was worth a shot. Hopefully someone figures out a workaround and shares their discovery.

i know that for 2019 models, after 2020 that google maps will be included, it's just a shame you can't get the carplay stuff on the virtual cockpit, id love to have waze on the VC. i feel like there has to be a way to get that going, the TT has the ability to do it!

Especially considering starting in 2020, or with a MMI update today if you want the latest version, you can kiss your Google maps overlay goodbye.

Probably not the appropriate thread, but I didn't want to make a new one, and also to see if anyone cane up with any solutions to the above.

Tried updating the navigation maps (even though I never use them) today, and it stayed at 0 kb forever. I could have sworn that last time, I have updated it after Audi connect already expired. Doesn't seem to work anymore.
Does anyone know whether this should be working, and whether there is a way to restore data to the car (freedompop or something). I don't care about the connect features as I use Android auto anyway, but it would be nice to have updated maps just because....of OCD.... Lol

It still works after Audi connect expires. I did mine a month ago. It uses the built in internet in the car though so poor service from being in a garage or underground will be slow. You can also download the apps online, put it on an SD card and flash manually as well.

Yeah that was going to be my next course of action if I can't get this to work.

Are you saying you can upload new maps via SD card? How did you do it and where did you get the file? We just moved to a new subdivision and even though my car is only a year and a half old, most of the streets around are not in it and I’d like to know how to update anyway.

    Downloading Map Updates:

    1) Get a 32 Gig SD memory card. Mine cost $20.

    2) Go to My Audi site, https://www.audiusa.com/myaudi. Log in.

    3) Click on the “Audi connect services” icon (below the car).

    4) On the services tab, click the right arrow to scroll to “Map update.” Click on it.

    5) You can choose “Complete package” or “Individual country.” Your choice. I chose complete package.

    6) Put you SD card in your computer. Alternately, you can load the map files to your hard drive. Click on “prepare package” at the bottom.

    7) This will download a file called “downloader” with a bunch of numbers after the word.

    8) You MUST have the latest version of Java. It will prompt you if needed.

    9) On the Mac, I needed to go into my security settings to allow the downloader file to open.

    10) It will open with a Java screen, followed by a Download client window that says “my Audi.” It asks you to choose a folder location for the files. Pick a location on your hard drive or SD card and click to go.

    11) The download starts and is tracked in the Download client window. The size of the files is 10.6 gig. It took about 2 hours to download on my computer.

    12) Once the files are downloaded, transfer them to your SD card if you didn’t load them direct. There will be two files “0231001C.md5”, “metainfo2.txt” and two folders “Mib1” and Mib2”. All are needed.

    13) Go to your car. You can do this while you are driving or stationary but the car must be on (not necessarily running but on).

    14) Stick the SD card into the SD1 slot in your glove box.

    15) In your MMI, go to Main menu>>Settings. Push the MMI scroll wheel to the left, it brings up a menu that says “MMI setup” and “System update.” Pick “System update.”

    16) Pick SD1 (i.e. where you put your SD card) and press the MMI button to select.

    17) The nav update will start and inform you of progress on the MMI screen. updates took about 20 minutes to load.

    Audi's Update Rules Are:
1.The latest map updates can be downloaded here free of charge and then installed in the vehicle via SD card. You can download and install the updates an unlimited number of times. The Map Update includes the first five updates to the version of the map installed at the factory. The updates are issued every six months.

    2. Transferring the new map package overwrites the map package currently stored in the MMI. The currently installed version can be found in the MMI under -> Setup MMI -> Version information -> Navigation database country versions.

    3. You can also have the new map data installed by an Audi dealer (there would be a charge for this service).

Then it looks like they updated the process and options due to the deactivation of Google eath/ maps across platforms.

It's not due to Google Earth going away, but rather due to an update to tbe MyAudi app. Once the app is updated the map update functionality will be restored. This is according to Audi.
